Is Kovalam Beach Open Today?

Yes. The beach has no gate and no closing time, so it is open today and every day, including Sundays and public holidays. If your plan is to walk on the sand, watch the sunset, or eat at the shacks along the promenade, you never have to check an opening hour.

The one thing that can be shut today is the lighthouse tower. It closes on Mondays. So if today is a Monday you can still use the beach freely, you just cannot climb the lighthouse. On the other six days the tower opens in the late morning and closes in the late afternoon. The next section has the detail.

Kovalam / Vizhinjam Lighthouse Timings and Entry Fee

The working lighthouse at the southern tip is officially the Vizhinjam lighthouse, and locals simply call it the Kovalam lighthouse. It opens to visitors Tuesday to Sunday and closes on Mondays. Visiting hours run from the late morning to the late afternoon, and several sources list a break around midday, so aim for either side of lunch rather than the middle of the day. A ticket costs about Rs 25 per adult, with a smaller charge for children, and some visitors are asked for a small extra fee to carry a camera or phone up the tower.

Inside, a lift and a final flight of stairs take you to the gallery near the top. From there the view runs across Kovalam’s three coves to the Vizhinjam harbour. Most people spend about ten minutes at the top before the next group comes up, and bags, umbrellas and food are usually left at the base. Best Time to Visit Kovalam Beach

For the beach itself, the best window is the late afternoon, roughly 4 pm to 7 pm, when the heat drops and the sun sets straight out over the Arabian Sea from the Lighthouse Beach promenade. Mornings before about 9 am are calm and good for a quiet swim. Season matters too. Good to Know Before You Go

Lighthouse Beach is one of three beaches on the same Kovalam bay. From south to north they run Lighthouse Beach, Hawa Beach (also written Hawah or Eve’s Beach) and Samudra Beach. When people say “Kovalam Beach” they usually mean this Lighthouse stretch, the one with the curved promenade and the red-and-white tower.

Swimming is safest inside the flagged zones where lifeguards watch the water. The currents here can be strong, so take the red flags seriously and keep children in the shallow, patrolled sections. After dark the promenade stays busy with cafes and lights, but the water is not patrolled at night, so an evening swim is a bad idea.
