Whether you are a honeymoon couple, a family looking for a peaceful vacation, a solo traveller seeking calm, or an adventure lover, Munnar has something special for everyone.

But one question comes to every traveller’s mind: “When is the best time to visit Munnar?” The answer depends on what kind of experience you want. Each season gives Munnar a new look and charm. Let’s find out the best time to go to Munnar and what makes every season special.

Why Timing Your Visit to Munnar Matters

Choosing the right time to visit Munnar can make your trip more enjoyable. The weather changes every season, which affects sightseeing, outdoor activities, and even hotel prices. Knowing when to go helps you plan better, save money, and enjoy Munnar at its best. During different months, the weather, crowd level, and travel experience change a lot. For example, winter offers pleasant weather and clear skies, perfect for sightseeing. Summer is great for adventure lovers, while the monsoon season turns Munnar into a green paradise.

How Seasons Affect Your Trip

  • Weather and Sightseeing: In winter, the weather is cool and perfect for exploring. During the monsoon, rain brings freshness but may limit travel to some outdoor spots.
  • Adventure Activities: Trekking and paragliding are best done in summer and early winter when trails are dry.
  • Romantic Experiences: Winter months are ideal for couples to enjoy misty mornings, cozy evenings, and tea garden walks.
  • Budget and Accommodation: Hotel prices rise in the peak season (winter and holidays) and drop during the monsoon when fewer tourists visit.

The good thing is that Munnar can be visited all year round. But the best time to visit Munnar depends on what you want: peaceful greenery, fun adventure, or romantic weather.

Weather and Climate in Munnar

Understanding the weather will help you plan better. Munnar’s weather stays cool and pleasant for most of the year because it is located at a high altitude of about 1,600 meters above sea level.

Average Temperature by Season:

  • Winter (October to February): 10°C – 25°C
  • Summer (March to May): 15°C – 30°C
  • Monsoon (June to September): 17°C – 25°C

  • Peak Season: October to February, clear weather, perfect for exploring, romantic stays, and outdoor fun.
  • Off-Season: June to September lush greenery, fewer crowds, and cheaper hotel prices.

Impact of Climate on Activities:

Cool weather during winter is ideal for sightseeing, while summer is great for trekking and adventure. Monsoon brings life to waterfalls and greenery, ideal for peaceful stays, spa sessions, and photography.

Best Seasons to Visit Munnar

Every season gives Munnar a new face. Let’s explore how the hill station changes throughout the year so you can decide the best time to visit Munnar in Kerala for yourself.

Winter (October–February):

Winter is the most popular and best time to visit Munnar. The temperature stays between 10°C and 25°C, making the weather cool, fresh, and enjoyable. This season is perfect for sightseeing, tea plantation walks, and photography. The misty air and warm sunlight make every view look beautiful. Couples can enjoy romantic evenings by the fire or cozy walks along tea gardens.

Activities to Try:

  • Visit Eravikulam National Park and spot the Nilgiri Tahr.
  • Enjoy a tea-tasting tour at one of the famous plantations.
  • Explore viewpoints like Echo Point, Top Station, and Pothamedu.
  • Go for short hikes and nature walks.

Suitable for: Families, honeymooners, senior citizens, and solo travellers who love calm weather. Winter also marks the festive season with Christmas and New Year celebrations. You’ll find lights, music, and joy all around. Just remember to book hotels early, as it’s the peak tourist season.

Summer (March–May)

Summer in Munnar is pleasant and ideal for those escaping the heat of cities like Chennai, Mumbai, or Ahmedabad. The temperature stays between 15°C and 30°C, making it comfortable for outdoor fun. During summer, the days are bright and perfect for adventure lovers who enjoy trekking, paragliding, or cycling. The tea gardens shine under the sunlight, and the hills look refreshing and green.

Activities to Try:

  • Trek to Anamudi Peak, the highest in South India.
  • Visit Mattupetty Dam and enjoy boating.
  • Explore Kundala Lake and Echo Point.
  • Take nature walks through tea and spice plantations.

Suitable for: Adventure seekers, solo travellers, long vacationers, and photographers who want to capture clear views of the valley. If you love adventure and don’t mind some sun, summer is the best time to go to Munnar.

Monsoon (June–September):

The monsoon brings heavy rain, turning Munnar into a green paradise. The temperature ranges between 17°C and 25°C, and the air feels fresh and clean. The hills sparkle with waterfalls, and the entire region smells of wet earth and tea leaves. Though trekking and long drives can be tricky due to slippery roads, the monsoon is perfect for quiet getaways, Ayurveda treatments, and scenic photography.

Activities to Try:

  • Visit Attukal and Lakkam Waterfalls at their best.
  • Enjoy Ayurvedic spa and wellness therapies.
  • Take short scenic drives and enjoy the misty views.
  • Visit spice plantations and learn about Kerala’s herbs.

Suitable for: Nature lovers, wellness travellers, and those who enjoy peaceful, offbeat trips.

Advisory: Avoid long treks or off-road travel since some paths can be slippery. Carry rain gear and waterproof footwear. If you want to see the true natural beauty of Munnar, monsoon is still one of the best times to visit Munnar in Kerala.

Traveller Types & Their Ideal Time to Visit

Different people travel to Munnar for different reasons some for peace, some for adventure, and some just to relax and enjoy nature. Munnar has something for everyone, but the best time to visit can vary depending on what you want to experience. Here’s a detailed guide to help you find the perfect season for your type of trip.

Honeymooners: Winter (November to February) and early summer (March to May) are the best times for couples. During these months, Munnar looks dreamy with cool breezes, misty mornings, and green valleys. The weather is pleasant for long walks through tea gardens or quiet evenings by the fireplace. It’s also a great time for romantic activities like watching the sunrise at Top Station or taking a scenic boat ride at Kundala Lake.

Families: If you’re travelling with family, winter is the most comfortable time to visit. The weather is neither too hot nor too cold, which makes sightseeing easy for children and older family members. All the major attractions, such as Eravikulam National Park, Mattupetty Dam, and the Tea Museum, are open and enjoyable. You can spend your days outdoors without worrying about rain or heat, making it a relaxed and fun trip for everyone.

Solo Travellers: For solo travellers, Munnar offers two ideal times depending on your interests.

  • If you enjoy trekking, exploring, and outdoor adventures, visit during summer (March to May). The clear skies and pleasant temperatures make it perfect for hiking trails and exploring offbeat spots.
  • If you prefer quiet moments, photography, or self-reflection, winter (November to February) is ideal. The misty mornings, calm environment, and fewer crowds create a peaceful setting to enjoy nature at your own pace.

Adventure Enthusiasts: Summer (March to May) and post-monsoon (September to October) seasons are the best for those who love adventure. During these times, the weather is dry and ideal for trekking, mountain biking, camping, and paragliding. The hills are covered with fresh greenery after the rains, and the trails are safe and scenic. Popular adventure spots like Meesapulimala and Anamudi Peak are at their best during this period.

Senior Travellers: For senior travellers, winter (November to February) is the most suitable time. The weather stays mild, not too cold and not humid, making sightseeing and walking around easy. The roads are in good condition, and there are many short and comfortable trips one can take, like visiting tea estates, viewpoints, and waterfalls. It’s a relaxing season to enjoy Munnar’s beauty without any travel discomfort.

Budget Travellers: If you want to enjoy Munnar without spending much, plan your trip during the monsoon season (June to September). This is the off-season, so hotels, resorts, and transport options are much cheaper. Though it rains often, the landscape looks greener and more vibrant than ever. Waterfalls are full, the air feels fresh, and there are fewer tourists around. Just carry an umbrella and raincoat, and you can still enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Festivals & Events in Munnar

Munnar is not just about scenic hills and tea gardens; it’s also a place full of culture and traditions. Throughout the year, several festivals and events bring the town to life with color, music, and celebrations. If you plan your trip during one of these times, you can enjoy a unique experience that shows the real spirit of Kerala. Here’s a closer look at some of the main festivals and events in Munnar:

Onam (August–September): Onam is Kerala’s most famous and grand festival. It usually falls between August and September and lasts for about ten days. This festival celebrates the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali and marks the harvest season. During Onam, the whole region, including Munnar, is filled with joy and cultural activities. You can see people wearing traditional clothes, houses decorated with colorful flower designs called Pookkalam, and enjoy special festive meals known as Onam Sadhya served on banana leaves. There are also traditional dance performances, music, and games that give you a taste of Kerala’s rich heritage. Visiting Munnar during Onam is a great way to experience local customs and connect with the local community.

Christmas & New Year (December): December is one of the most exciting times to visit Munnar. The cool weather and festive mood make it extra special. During Christmas and New Year, the town sparkles with lights and decorations. Churches and resorts organize celebrations, carol singing, and special dinners. Many hotels and homestays host New Year’s Eve parties with bonfires, music, and local performances. It’s a cheerful time to be in Munnar, perfect for couples and families who want to enjoy both nature and festivities together.

Local Fairs & Harvest Festivals: Apart from big celebrations like Onam and Christmas, Munnar also has smaller village fairs and harvest festivals throughout the year. These local events may not be widely advertised, but they offer a wonderful chance to see traditional life in the hills. You might come across temple festivals with music and dance, local markets selling handmade goods, or small gatherings celebrating the tea harvest. These fairs give visitors a closer look at the lifestyle, food, and customs of the people who live in Munnar. They are simple yet full of warmth and community spirit.

Tips for Travellers During Festivals: Festivals make Munnar lively and full of energy, but they also attract many tourists. This means hotels, resorts, and cab services get booked quickly, and prices tend to go up. If you plan to visit Munnar during Onam, Christmas, or any other major festival, it’s best to book your stay and travel arrangements early. Also, carry some extra time in your schedule since roads and attractions may be more crowded than usual. Festivals in Munnar add a special charm to your trip. Whether it’s the traditional joy of Onam, the sparkling lights of Christmas, or the local fairs filled with culture and music, each event gives you a deeper connection to the people and their way of life. If you love experiencing local traditions and festive energy, visiting Munnar during these times can make your journey even more memorable.

Because many people travel to Munnar during this period, hotels and resorts often get fully booked. If you’re planning a winter trip, it’s best to book your stay in advance to avoid last-minute issues. Prices are usually higher during these months, but the beautiful misty hills, pleasant weather, and peaceful atmosphere make it worth the extra cost.

Hotel prices are moderate at this time, and you can easily find good accommodation without much hassle. This season is ideal for longer stays, family vacations, and relaxed holidays. Many hotels also offer special summer packages, so it’s a good time to explore different options.
  • Monsoon (June to September): The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall to Munnar, turning the hills and valleys lush and green. It’s a peaceful time to visit if you enjoy nature and don’t mind the rain. Since this is the off-season, most hotels and resorts offer big discounts, making it a great time for budget travellers. However, it’s important to choose accommodation that is safe and comfortable during the rains—preferably one that offers indoor activities or cozy spaces to relax. Look for stays that have good drainage, backup power, and easy road access during wet weather.

In short, Munnar has good accommodation options all year round. Your choice should depend on your budget, the type of experience you want, and the season in which you’re visiting.

Climate in Munnar

Summer Season in Munnar

Summers are pleasant in Munnar. As the period between the low season, which is humid and wet, and the peak season, which is crowded, many consider summer the ideal time to visit Munnar. The temperatures remain between 15 and 27 degrees Celsius, and although it rains often, the rains are mild and infrequent. It is a great time to go sightseeing and immerse oneself in the place's culture, nature, and history. Summer is the best season to visit Munnar for those looking for a budget holiday during a pleasant time to travel around the state.

Monsoon Season in Munnar

The lakes and waterfalls of Munnar come into full force during the monsoon season. Like the rest of Kerala, Munnar transforms into a pastoral green world. The plantations and hills are exquisite after a shower of rain. The very air has an earthy sweetness that can’t be experienced any other time. Do, however, pack your rainwear and gumboots, and bring your umbrellas and windcheaters in case you encounter a sudden downpour. It rains about 20 out of 30 days each month, which is why not many people visit Munnar during monsoon, and it is technically considered the off-season for tourism.

Winter Season in Munnar

The best season to visit Munnar is, of course, the winter. When else can you sip warm, aromatic tea gazing at the sunset through the hills? Explore charming sites such as Lockhart Tea Factory, Top Station and Mount Carmel Church. Munnar's winter climate is nothing short of magical. The temperature remains between 10 and 24 degrees Celsius, and in regions of extreme altitude, it can even drop below the freezing point sometimes. The crispy, chilly climate makes you want to snuggle next to a bonfire, enjoy warm cocoa, and sing Christmas carols.

Our Kerala trip was nicely arranged through Travel Triangle via Comfort Travel Agency. The itinerary and pricing provided were competitive. The travel executive, Sameer, was also available on call whenever guidance was needed, which we truly appreciated. However, a few promised add-ons were not ful
filled as committed — specifically the arrangements for Kathakali, Kalaripayattu tickets, and the Munnar photoshoot. We had to manage these ourselves and pay from our own pocket. While the amount for Kathakali and Kalaripayattu was eventually reimbursed after multiple follow-ups, the photoshoot expense was not reimbursed. It would be better if such add-ons are either fulfilled as promised or the relevant refunds are processed promptly on the first follow-up. Multiple follow-ups affect the overall experience and mood of an otherwise well-planned trip.

Five-Star Experience in God's Own Country: Munnar & Alappuzha Tour Overall Rating: 5/5 (Highly Recommended!) Werecently concluded a phenomenal 3-night, 4-day trip covering the stunning hill station of Munnar and the tranquil backwaters of Alappuzha (Alleppey), arranged through Namaskaram Travels.
The entire experience, from initial planning to final drop-off, was seamless, professional, and truly unforgettable. This package delivered the perfect blend of misty mountains and serene waters, and we can’t thank the team enough. Agent Excellence: Vineet (Namaskaram Travels) A huge shout-out must go to our travel agent, Vineet. His professionalism and meticulous attention to detail made the entire booking process completely stress-free. Vineet expertly tailored the 4-day itinerary to maximize our time, ensuring comfortable travel and excellent accommodations in both locations. He was always responsive to our queries and ensured all logistics—from hotel check-ins to the houseboat boarding—were handled flawlessly. It felt great knowing we had such a reliable point of contact throughout the journey. Our Wonderful Driver: Subin Our driver, Subin, was truly the backbone of this trip. The drives between Kochi, Munnar, and Alappuzha are long, but Subin’s careful, safe driving and punctuality made every journey pleasant. He was extremely friendly, professional, and had superb local knowledge, pointing out hidden waterfalls, interesting spice plantations, and the best local spots for tea breaks. Subin's service went above and beyond; he was a reliable guide and a genuinely pleasant person to spend four days with. Trip Highlights Munnar (2 Nights) The rolling tea estates of Munnar are breathtaking. Our itinerary covered key spots like the scenic Mattupetty Dam, the fun echo phenomenon at Echo Point, and the unforgettable views from the top of the hills. The drive up, featuring stops and Valara waterfalls, set the perfect tone for the mountain stay. Alappuzha (1 Night Houseboat Cruise) The overnight stay on the traditional Keralite houseboat was magical and easily the highlight of the trip. Cruising through the narrow canals, witnessing village life, and watching the sunset over the backwaters was a truly unique experience. The traditional Keralite food served on the boat was delicious, and the staff was very attentive. In summary, if you are planning a trip to Kerala, we wholeheartedly recommend Namaskaram Travels. Ask for Vineet for the planning and Subin for the driving—they are a fantastic team! Date of Travel: October 2025 Package: 3 Nights / 4 Days Munnar & Alappuzha

Entire trip was good and enjoyed with family, one experience could have been improved, after finalising the package cost, the hotel costs were increased by 6000 Rs. these type of decisions should be kept us informed before finalising the package. The hotel cost revision was informed after we made t
he payment of our first instalment. This was bitter experience to be honest. Spent a wonderful time with our friends and family

Shuchit's 9 days trip to Munnar

The travel agent was very good. She communicated clearly and provided support through out. Very helpful and did not disturb on odd hours. The cab driver was also very good. Only issue was that he did not understand English and Hindi so sometimes communication was difficult.
