Best Time to Visit Wayanad: Month-wise Weather, Seasons and Safety (2026)

Wayanad sits on a plateau in the Western Ghats of northern Kerala, 700 to 2,100 m above sea level, so it stays cooler than the coast in every month. What changes through the year is rain, and rain decides everything here: which treks are open, whether the ghat road up from Kozhikode is safe after dark, and what you pay for a room. This guide gives you the month-by-month numbers, what is open when, and the one question most other guides skip, which is whether it is safe to go right now. Wayanad Weather Month by Month

Here is the Wayanad climate in one table. Temperatures and rainfall are long-term monthly averages for Kalpetta, the district headquarters at about 780 m. Treat the rain column as a guide to how wet the month feels, not a promise.

Rain is not spread evenly across Wayanad. Lakkidi, Vythiri and Meppadi on the western, windward edge take 3,000 to 4,000 mm a year, among the wettest belts in Kerala. The district as a whole averages about 2,800 mm (IMD normal), and the eastern side around Sulthan Bathery and Pulpally sits in a rain shadow and gets much less. So a monsoon trip based in Sulthan Bathery feels very different from one in a Vythiri resort.

Wayanad in January

January is the driest month, with about 4 mm of rain and nights near 17°C. Mornings at Lakkidi and on the Chembra trail start in mist and clear by 10 am. Every safari, trek and viewpoint is open, which is exactly why rooms are at their priciest. Wayanad in February

February is the warmest of the peak months at about 29°C by day, and still bone dry. The forests start to thin out, which makes animals easier to see on the Muthanga jeep safari. Late in the month the first "blossom showers" set off the coffee flowering across the estates, and for a week or so the plantations smell of jasmine. It is a good month for couples who want peak-season weather with slightly fewer families around.

Wayanad in March

March is hot by Wayanad standards (30°C highs) but mornings stay cool. The catch is wildlife. The Forest Department usually closes Muthanga and Tholpetty to tourists from early or mid-March into late April because of fire risk, so a safari-led trip should not be planned for this month. Mananthavady's Valliyoorkavu temple festival runs for 14 days in the Malayalam month of Meenam, roughly mid to late March. Treks, caves and dams stay open.

Wayanad in April

April brings the first pre-monsoon storms, around 99 mm in the month, usually as short evening downpours after hot afternoons. The sanctuaries typically reopen in the second half of the month. Vishu, the Kerala new year, falls in mid-April. School-holiday weekends fill up, but weekdays are quiet and rates sit well below December levels. Start treks by 7 am to finish before the heat and the storms.

Wayanad in May

May is the last dry-ish month, though "dry" means about 210 mm, mostly in afternoon thunderstorms. Banasura Sagar Dam and Pookode Lake boating are at their best in the clear mornings, and families from Bengaluru and Mysuru drive up for summer holidays, so weekends are busy. Wayanad in June

The southwest monsoon usually arrives in the first week of June and the month collects about 664 mm. The hills turn green within days. Kuruva Island shuts for the season, and treks and waterfalls close on any orange or red alert day. Hotel rates drop to their lowest, which suits couples who plan to stay put in one resort. Wayanad in July

July is the wettest month by a distance, averaging over 1,200 mm at Kalpetta. Expect days of unbroken rain, leeches on every forest path, and landslide warnings on the ghat roads. It is also the Karkidakam month, when Ayurveda centres run their traditional monsoon treatments. Go only if rain is the point of the trip. The Wayanad monsoon guide covers what still works in July.

Wayanad in August

August eases slightly to about 637 mm but remains high-risk for road travel. The 30 July 2024 landslide struck at the peak of this same late-July to August window, so check alerts daily. Karkidaka Vavu brings thousands of pilgrims to Thirunelli Temple for ancestral rites at the Papanasini stream (it fell on 12 August in 2026). Onam arrives late August or September. Sanctuaries stay open, but jeep safaris are suspended in heavy rain.

Wayanad in September

September is the turning point. Rain drops to about 275 mm, waterfalls are at full volume, and treks and viewpoints reopen one by one as the district lifts restrictions. This is the value month. You get the greenest landscape of the year at off-season rates, with far better odds of dry mornings than in July. Carry rain gear anyway.

Wayanad in October

October is the post-monsoon sweet spot. The northeast monsoon brings about 239 mm, mostly as afternoon showers, so mornings are clear for Chembra, Edakkal and Banasura. Waterfalls like Meenmutty and Kanthanpara still run strong, and paddy fields around Panamaram are bright green. Puja holidays push up prices from mid-month. Wayanad in November

November is our pick for the single best month to visit Wayanad. Rain falls to about 92 mm, nights cool to 19°C, the landscape is still green from the monsoon, and the December crowds have not arrived yet. Every safari, trek and boating point is open. It is the month we suggest most often to first-time visitors and families.

Wayanad in December

December brings the coolest nights of the year (around 17°C), misty mornings at Lakkidi and Pookode, and almost no rain. It is also the busiest month. Resorts around Vythiri and Kalpetta sell out for Christmas and New Year weeks in advance, and weekend traffic on the Thamarassery ghat can add an hour to the drive. Wayanad Seasons Explained

If you would rather think in seasons than months, the year splits into four windows, and the best time to visit Wayanad for you depends on which one fits your trip.

Winter and peak season (November to February)

Temperatures run from about 17°C at night to 29°C by day. This is the most comfortable season for sightseeing, trekking and the wildlife sanctuaries, and it is the best time to visit Wayanad with family. Evenings get cool enough for a light sweater, especially at higher resorts near Lakkidi and Vythiri. Trips for families, honeymoons and senior citizens all work well now. Everything is open, so plan for peak rates.

Post-monsoon (October)

October overlaps with winter in feel but keeps the monsoon's green and the full waterfalls. Showers come in the afternoon, so do outdoor plans before lunch. This is the best balance of scenery and accessibility in the year.

Summer and shoulder season (March to May)

Summer runs from about 20°C at night to 30°C in the afternoon. Wayanad never gets as hot as the plains, and early mornings are still cool enough for treks. Clear skies suit Chembra, Banasura Hill, the Karlad Lake zipline and night camping. The trade-off is the sanctuary closure in March and April, and thunderstorms from April.

Monsoon and off season (June to September)

Monsoon temperatures stay between about 19 and 26°C, but rainfall is heavy, humidity is high, and forest trails turn slippery. It is the best season for Ayurveda, photography and budget stays, and the worst for treks and road trips with small children. Read the next two sections before booking a monsoon trip.

Worst Time to Visit Wayanad

The worst time to visit Wayanad is mid-June to mid-August, the mirror image of the best time to visit Wayanad (November to February). July is the hardest month of all. Three things go wrong at once. Rain averages over 1,200 mm in July, so Chembra, Soochipara and most waterfall trails close on alert days. The ghat roads into the district (the Thamarassery churam from Kozhikode, the Kuttiyadi ghat and the Periya ghat from Kannur) are prone to landslips and fallen trees, and night driving is risky. And leeches come out on every forest path.

That does not mean nobody should go. Couples who want a quiet resort stay, Ayurveda travellers booking a Karkidakam treatment, and photographers chasing mist and waterfalls all do well in the monsoon, as long as they base themselves in one place and keep the itinerary loose. Is It Safe to Visit Wayanad Now?

Yes. Most of Wayanad is open to tourists as of 27 September 2026. On 30 July 2024, landslides at Mundakkai, Chooralmala and Punchirimattom in Meppadi panchayat killed 298 people, and 32 more who were never found were later declared dead by the Kerala Government. That belt, a small area in the south-west of the district, is still a restricted zone and is not a tourist area.

What is open today:

• Kalpetta, Vythiri, Lakkidi, Sulthan Bathery, Mananthavady and Ambalavayal, including Edakkal Caves, Pookode Lake, Banasura Sagar Dam and the Muthanga and Tholpetty sanctuaries

• Chembra Peak, subject to the Forest Department's daily permit at Meppadi

• Soochipara Falls, which also lies in Meppadi, has closed at short notice since 2024, so call DTPC Wayanad before you drive out

How to check before and during your trip. Look at the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) district alerts and IMD's Kerala bulletin each morning. An orange or red alert for Wayanad means treks, waterfalls and boating are closed for the day, and the District Collector can close any site at short notice. From June to August, check every day. Things to Do in Wayanad by Season

Once you have picked the best time to visit Wayanad, match the activities to the weather.

Winter (October to February). Trek Chembra to the heart-shaped lake and Banasura Hill in the cool mornings. Take the Muthanga or Tholpetty jeep safari for elephants, gaur and deer. Walk up to Edakkal Caves, and spend an afternoon on a coffee, pepper and cardamom estate walk, where most tours end with fresh estate coffee.

Summer (March to May). Start treks at dawn. Try night camping and the Karlad zipline, go birdwatching at Pookode Lake in the early morning, and take a boat out on Banasura Sagar. Skip the sanctuaries in March and early April.

Monsoon (June to September). Book an Ayurveda package during Karkidakam, walk through the plantations on a guided nature trail, and watch the waterfalls from the viewing points rather than the pools. Plan indoor time at your resort for the heaviest afternoons.
