About Kek Lok Si in Penang
Kek Lok Si is a famous and the largest Buddist temple in Penang, Malaysia. It is visited by pilgrimages from most of the Southeast Asian countries and other countries like Singapore, Philippines, etc. The temple is nestled in the beautiful valleys of Penang and boasts of amazing viewpoints. The main highlight of the temple is the seven-storied Pagoda of Rama VI which has 10,000 alabaster and bronze statues of Buddha. One can climb and reach on the top of Pagoda with the help of stairs and witness the mesmerizing view of Penang city. Another highlighting feature of Kek Lok Si is 30.2 meters bronze statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of mercy. Furthermore, when one reaches the crest of the temple, discover a small fish pond, 12 animal statues, gardens, and few temples.
Kek Lok Si Temple History
The construction of the temple began in 1890 and was completed in 1930, the sole person responsible for this spiritual initiative was Beow Lean who was the chief monk of the Kuan Yin. The temple comprises of monasteries, prayer halls, temples, gardens, and the construction of these iconic landmarks was funded by five Chinese business people of Penang.
Events in Kek Lok Si Temple
For the Chinese community in Penang, Kek Lok Si is the center point of festivals. The most enthusiastically celebrated festival in the temple is Chinese New Year, for 30 days the temple remains open till late in the night, with thousands of lights lit. The atmosphere is very lively and the place is visited by many devotees. Another festival celebrated in the temple is the long march undertaken by the thousands of monks from twice every year from Thailand to Kek Lok Si
The Kek Lok Si temple is filled with magnificent images of Buddha, thousands of beautiful spiritual carvings, sculptures, and excellent paintings in the interior and exterior of the temple walls. Though the temple is recognized for Chineses culture and Buddha teachings, there is more to it such as rich heritage and a harmonious blend of Chinese rituals with Mahayana Buddhism.
