Kashmir 8 Days 7 Nights Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar | Mughal Gardens and Dal Lake

Our representative will greet you at Srinagar airport or railway station and drop you at Hotel Royal Heritage on Munawar Link Road, your base for the next three nights. After you freshen up, drive along the Dal Lake boulevard to the Mughal gardens on its eastern shore. Nishat Bagh, laid out in 1633 by Asif Khan, climbs in twelve terraces toward the Zabarwan hills. Shalimar Bagh, which Emperor Jahangir built for Nur Jahan, is a few minutes further. Chashme Shahi, the smallest of the three, was laid out in 1632 around a spring whose water locals still bottle, and the botanical garden sits just below it. Garden entry tickets are paid at each gate. Head back to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay in Srinagar.

Day 2: Srinagar to Sonamarg to Srinagar | Thajiwas Glacier

After breakfast, drive about 80 km up the Sindh valley to Sonamarg, the Meadow of Gold, in 2.5 to 3 hours. The road follows the Sindh river through Kangan before the valley opens onto a wide meadow at around 2,700 m, ringed by glaciers. From the parking area the Thajiwas Glacier is about 3 km away. Walk it, or hire a pony from the official stand and agree the rate before you mount. Snow usually lingers near the glacier into early summer, and sledge pullers wait at the snow line. In summer, local Sonamarg taxis also run past Baltal to Zero Point at extra cost. Start back by 4 pm to reach Srinagar around 7 pm for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Srinagar to Doodhpathri to Srinagar | The Valley of Milk

Doodhpathri, the valley of milk, is about 42 km south-west of Srinagar in Budgam district, a drive of 1.5 to 2 hours after breakfast. The name comes from the Shaliganga stream, which breaks white over the rocks as it runs through the meadow. At around 2,700 m, the grass is open and wide, with pine forest on the slopes and Bakarwal shepherds grazing their flocks from May to September. Walk down to the stream and follow it upriver, or hire a pony for the far meadows and agree the price first. There are only a few tea stalls and no proper restaurants, so carry snacks. Phone signal is weak here. Drive back to Srinagar for dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 4: Srinagar to Gulmarg | Gondola to Kongdori

Check out after breakfast and drive about 50 km west to Gulmarg, the Meadow of Flowers, in 1.5 to 2 hours via Tangmarg. Check in to Khaleel Palace on Alambal Road, a short walk from the Gondola base. The Gulmarg Gondola runs in two phases. Phase 1 climbs to Kongdori at about 3,080 m, and Phase 2 continues to Apharwat at about 3,980 m, where snow lies well into May. On a clear day you can see Nanga Parbat, at 8,126 m, far to the north from the top. Tickets are not included and are sold online only, so book them as soon as your dates are fixed. Later, walk across the meadow to St Mary's Church, built in 1902, and past the golf course, one of the highest in the world. Khilanmarg is a separate meadow about 6 km uphill, reached on foot or by pony. From December to March the whole bowl is under snow and you can sledge or ski. Dinner and overnight stay in Gulmarg.

Day 5: Gulmarg to Pahalgam via Pampore and Avantipora

Leave Gulmarg by 8 am. There is no direct road to Pahalgam, so today's drive runs back past Srinagar and then south-east, about 140 to 150 km and 4 to 5 hours with stops. Just past Srinagar you reach the saffron fields of Pampore, which flower purple from late October to mid-November, and shops along the highway sell saffron and kahwa all year. Stop at the Avantipora ruins, two stone temples built by King Avantivarman about 1,100 years ago. Near Sangam you pass the workshops where Kashmir willow cricket bats are made, and most drivers will stop if you ask. After Anantnag the road picks up the Lidder River and follows it through pine forest into Pahalgam, at about 2,200 m. Check in to Lidder Spring Resorts at Yanner Bridge and walk along the river before dinner. Overnight stay in Pahalgam.

Day 6: Pahalgam to Srinagar | Betaab Valley and Shikara Ride

Use the morning for one of the valleys above town. They are reached only by Pahalgam union taxi, paid locally per vehicle. Betaab Valley, about 15 km up, took its name from the 1983 film shot there. Aru Valley, about 12 km away, is the base for the Kolahoi Glacier trek. Chandanwari, about 16 km, is where the Amarnath Yatra route begins. Baisaran meadow above town has been closed to visitors since April 2025. After lunch, drive about 95 km back to Srinagar in 2.5 to 3 hours and check in to Hotel Royal Heritage. End the day with the shikara ride on Dal Lake, past the floating gardens and the lotus beds. The floating vegetable market trades only at dawn, so ask your houseboat for an early shikara on Day 8 if you want to see it. Dinner and overnight stay in Srinagar.

Day 7: Shankaracharya Temple to Yusmarg to Dal Lake Houseboat

Start early with the climb to the Shankaracharya Temple on Mount Sulaiman, about 240 steps up, for the whole lake and city laid out below. Cars are not allowed up the hill after 5 pm, which is why the climb sits in the morning. Phones and cameras are not allowed past the security gate, so leave them in the cab. Then drive to Yusmarg, about 47 km south-west of Srinagar, a drive of 1.5 to 2 hours through apple orchards and paddy fields. The meadow sits at about 2,400 m, edged by fir and pine, with the snow line of the Pir Panjal behind it. The Doodh Ganga river runs below the meadow, and a pony trail of about 4 km leads to Nilnag, a small lake in the forest. Pony rates are fixed at the stand, so ask before you start. Yusmarg sees a fraction of Gulmarg's crowds, which is the point of coming. Back in Srinagar, move to the Badyari Palace Houseboat at Ghat No. 9 on Boulevard Road for a Kashmiri dinner and your last night on the water.

Day 8: Departure from Srinagar

Have breakfast on the houseboat veranda and take a shikara back to the ghat. If your flight is in the afternoon, there is time for saffron, walnuts, papier-mâché or a pashmina in the shops on Polo View or Residency Road. Our representative will then drop you at Srinagar airport. Reach it about 2.5 hours before departure, because cars and bags are checked at an outer gate before the terminal.
