Pahalgam Tourism: Complete Travel Guide (2026)

It is a good place to visit with friends, family or solo, since it has something or the other to offer everybody from shopaholics to nature enthusiasts, from thrill-seekers to those seeking peace. This guide covers what is open right now, where everything is, how to get around under the union-taxi rules, and how many days to plan.

• How many days? Two days covers the town, Betaab and Aru. Chandanwari, the third valley, is closed until at least 31 December 2026. Plan four if you want a trek from Aru.

• Best time? April to June for green meadows and rafting, September to October for clear skies, December to February for snow.

• Is Baisaran open? No. As of 23 October 2026 the Baisaran meadow is still closed to visitors, and so is Chandanwari, which is on the Anantnag district closed list until 31 December 2026. Betaab and Aru are open.

• Can I drive my Srinagar cab to Betaab and Aru? No. Sightseeing beyond town runs only on Pahalgam union taxis.

Is Pahalgam open and safe to visit? Current status (October 2026)

On 22 April 2025, militants attacked tourists at the Baisaran meadow above Pahalgam and killed 26 people. After the attack the administration shut dozens of tourist sites and trekking routes across Kashmir for a security review. Tourism has come back since. Kashmir Life, citing official data, reported about 10 lakh visitors to Pahalgam in the year after the attack.

Here is where things stand as of 23 October 2026. The town, the Lidder riverfront, Betaab Valley and Aru Valley are open and see daily union-taxi traffic. Baisaran, Chandanwari and Tulian Lake are still closed. All three are on the Anantnag district administration's list of closed tourist destinations dated 7 July 2026, and that order runs to 31 December 2026. In February 2026 the Chief Minister told the Assembly that all closed destinations would reopen by May 2026, but that deadline has passed and Baisaran remains shut. In July 2026 the Director of Tourism Kashmir said all trekking routes would stay closed until further orders, which takes in the Great Lakes trek. The Tulian Lake trek, which climbs through Baisaran, is effectively off the table while the meadow is closed.

Security is visible. Expect checkpoints on the Srinagar road and at the valley entrances, more so during the Amarnath Yatra in July and August. Three habits make the trip smoother. Carry a photo ID for every traveller, hire only registered pony handlers and union taxis, and check the latest advisory from J&K Tourism or your hotel the evening before any excursion. Where is Pahalgam? The Pahalgam (Lidder) Valley explained

Pahalgam sits where two rivers meet. The East Lidder comes down from Sheshnag Lake and Chandanwari, and the West Lidder flows out of the Kolahoi Glacier past Aru. Below town the Lidder runs south-west for about 40 km through Anantnag district and joins the Jhelum at Khanabal, near Anantnag. The whole river is about 73 km long. It does not pass through Srinagar, whatever older brochures say.

The name is usually read as pahal (shepherd) and gaam (village), which is why JKTDC calls it the "valley of shepherds". You still see Bakarwal and Gujjar herders moving flocks up to the high pastures in early summer.

What people call the Pahalgam Valley is really three side valleys fanning out from town. Betaab is about 7 to 8 km up the East Lidder road. Chandanwari is further along the same road, 16 km from town. Aru is about 12 km up the other branch, the West Lidder, so a taxi going from Betaab to Aru has to come back through Pahalgam first. Places to visit in Pahalgam

On a trip to Pahalgam, travelers love to spend time ensconced in the lap of nature at one of the valleys. Aru Valley and Betaab Valley are where people head to first. Aru Valley is characterized by tall grasslands, thick forests and meandering streams, punctuated by glacial mountains, whereas Betaab Valley, the site of multiple Hindi movies, is characterized by wildflowers and rolling hills till as far as the eyes can see.

Betaab Valley is the one almost everyone sees first. The taxi drops you at a ticket gate, and inside is a flat green meadow with the Lidder running clear over stones and a wooden footbridge that every family photographs. Aru feels more lived-in. It is a working village of log houses and shepherd huts on a wide meadow, with pony handlers waiting at the edge to take you further up the valley. The Aru Valley blog covers where to walk and stay. Overa-Aru Wildlife Sanctuary lies along this road. It used to be hunting grounds for years, for the kings and then the British, and is now protected habitat for the Himalayan brown and black bear, musk deer and a long list of birds.

Chandanwari is closed to tourists for now. The Anantnag district administration put it on its list of closed destinations on 7 July 2026, and the order runs to 31 December 2026. When it reopens, Chandanwari is the coldest of the three and the one to pick if your group wants snow outside winter. Things to do in Pahalgam

The town is quiet in the evenings, so plan your active hours for the mornings. These are the activities our travellers book most, with the season each works in. For the longer list, read things to do in Pahalgam or browse the things to do section.

Rafting on the Lidder is the adventure most first-timers try. The glacial river runs frothy and cold for a few kilometres before calming down on its way to the Jhelum, so the runs are short and lively. Our river rafting in Pahalgam guide lists the stretches and operators.

The trek to Kolahoi Glacier is considered one of the best treks in India. Locals call the glacier the "Goddess of Light", and it feeds the West Lidder. The usual route walks from Aru to Lidderwat and then up the valley to the glacier snout over two to three days. In July 2026 the Director of Tourism Kashmir said all trekking routes would stay closed until further orders, so confirm with the Aru trekking operators before you plan around it. How to reach Pahalgam

Almost every trip to Pahalgam passes through Srinagar. You fly or take the train into the Valley, then drive the last 90 km. Detailed route guides are linked in the table.

By air

Srinagar International Airport (SXR) has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and other metros. From the airport a pre-booked cab to Pahalgam takes about 2.5 hours. Sedans are quoted around Rs 3,700 one way and SUVs around Rs 4,500.

By train

Kashmir has been connected to the national rail network since June 2025, when the Katra to Srinagar Vande Bharat began running. Since 2 May 2026 a direct Vande Bharat also runs from Jammu Tawi. Train 26401 leaves Jammu Tawi at 06:20 and reaches Srinagar (Nowgam) at 11:10. From Srinagar, the valley line reaches Anantnag in about an hour, and Anantnag is 46 km from Pahalgam by road. An experimental Vande Bharat halt at Anantnag has been approved but was not in the timetable as of October 2026. Train options from the capital are in our Delhi to Kashmir trains guide.

By road

From Srinagar the drive follows NH-44 south past Pampore, where the saffron fields bloom purple in late October, then turns off at Khanabal near Anantnag onto NH-501 along the Lidder. JKSRTC buses from Srinagar cost about Rs 294 to Rs 496 depending on class, with direct runs mostly in summer. Shared Sumos leave from Pantha Chowk in Srinagar. From Jammu, the NH-44 drive through the Chenani-Nashri and Banihal tunnels takes 7 to 8 hours, and one-way taxis are quoted between Rs 5,000 and Rs 7,800.

Worth a stop on the Srinagar road are the Awantipora temple ruins and, a short detour from Anantnag, the Martand Sun Temple at Mattan.

Getting around Pahalgam: union taxis and ponies

Pahalgam is full of commuting options such as ponies, taxis and shared vehicles for tourists and locals. The rules matter more than the options, though. A J&K High Court order of 3 June 2024 bars taxis from running routes their permit does not cover inside the Pahalgam Development Authority area, and in practice the Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari routes are worked by taxis registered at the two Pahalgam stands. Your Srinagar cab or rental car drops you in town and waits there.

Union taxis run off a fixed rate card posted at the stand, and fares are charged per vehicle, not per person. Check the current card at the stand or ask your hotel to book the Aru and Betaab round trip the evening before.

Ponies are available at registered agencies. Ask your handler to show his registration card, agree the route and the waiting time before you get on, and settle the price at the start, not the end. For the Aru meadow and the forest trails above town, a pony is often easier than walking at this altitude.

How many days in Pahalgam? 1 to 4 day itineraries

Two to three days is right for most travellers. A day trip from Srinagar is possible but rushed, because the round trip alone eats five hours.

1 day (from Srinagar). Leave Srinagar by 7 am and stop at Pampore and Awantipora on the way. Reach Pahalgam by 10, take a union taxi to Betaab and Aru, have a late lunch by the Lidder and start back by 4 pm.

2 days. Day 1, arrive from Srinagar, walk the Lidder riverfront, visit Mamleshwar Temple and browse the main market. Day 2, take a union taxi to Aru and Betaab, which fills most of the day. Chandanwari is normally the third stop, but it is closed to tourists until at least 31 December 2026.

3 days. Follow the 2-day plan, then spend day 3 on the river and the edges of town. Raft the Lidder in the morning, play nine holes at the golf course or try trout fishing in the afternoon, and take a pony ride along the forest trails.

4 days. Add a day hike from Aru towards Lidderwat if trek routes are open, or stay a night at Aru for the quiet. Either way, you leave rested instead of rushed.

Food and shopping in Pahalgam

There are plenty of eateries in the town center that serve authentic Kashmiri cuisine as well as other popular dishes. Order rogan josh, yakhni and gushtaba if you want the wazwan staples, and fried Lidder trout because you are sitting next to the river it came from. Kahwa with almonds keeps you warm on cold mornings, and the salty pink noon chai is worth one try. The places our travellers mention most are Troutbeat, Café Log Inn, Dana Pani and Nathu's Rasoi, all within walking distance of the main market.

The main market sits in the middle of town and sells much the same as every Kashmir bazaar, so buy for the craft. Look for walnut-wood boxes and figurines, papier-mâché, pashmina shawls, hand-knotted carpets and loose kahwa. Ask for a certificate with pashmina, and buy saffron at Pampore on the drive rather than in town.
