How to Reach Rumtek Monastery

If you are choosing flight, you do need to first go to Bagdogra, West Bengal. Almost all major airlines like air India, Jet airways, Indigo etc. have flights to this airport. Flight rate depends on the time you are travelling. Then, you do need to take helicopter service available, which flies between Bagdogra and Greenfield Airport Pakyong (Gangtok). You can avail a taxi or a bus at the airport to Rumtek Monastery. The total distance from airport to monastery is around 34 Kilometers and it takes an hour and half to two to reach via taxi.

If you are opting train, then, you can either stop at Siliguri or New Jalpaiguri railway stations close to Gangtok. Trains starting from Guwahati passes through New Jalpaiguri hence have direct connections to Major cities like New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Trivandrum etc.  You can avail bus or taxi services from railway station.  It takes around 4 hours to reach Gangtok via taxi and around 5_hrs via bus.

If you are choosing Road then Sikkim is well linked through good roads. Regular bus services are available from Bagdogra, Darjeeling, Calcutta, and Kalimpong.

Transportation from Gangtok to Rumtek Monastery

There are multiple options to reach Rumtek Monastery. The Monastery can be reached by Taxi or Bus.  Other modes of transportation are shared vehicle available between 10am to 2pm from Gangtok Taxi Jeep Service Stand located near the hotel Hungry Jack on NH31A. This is the most economical compared to other transportation services on the basis of cost and time.

Stay at Gangtok city for 3-5 days to make most of your trip. You can also cover nearby town and villages. There is a lake called Changu Lake which is popular for its cool and tranquil water and scenic environment. Chungthang is also an important place worth visiting because of its religious importance.
