How to Reach Dehiwala Zoo from Colombo

Buses are the local way to the zoo and the cheapest by far, usually LKR 30 to 50 a head. From Pettah or Colombo Fort, take any Galle Road service heading south toward Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia or Moratuwa. Routes 100 and 101 run this corridor. Ask the conductor for the Dehiwala stop. The ride is about 30 to 40 minutes once Galle Road traffic is in the mix. From the main road it is a short walk, or a quick LKR 100 to 150 tuk-tuk hop, to the zoo gate on Dharmapala Mawatha. Buses are frequent, start early, and you pay on board in cash. They get packed at peak hours, so travelling with children or bags is easier mid-morning.

For door-to-door convenience a tuk-tuk is hard to beat. Book through the PickMe or Uber app for a metered fare rather than haggling on the street. Expect around LKR 300 to 600 from central Colombo for the 20 to 30 minute run down Galle Road. A full car or taxi costs more, in the region of LKR 800 to 1,500, and earns its keep if you are carrying luggage, travelling as a family, or pairing the zoo with Mount Lavinia beach a few kilometres further south. Every driver knows the zoo, so the name alone is enough.

The coastal railway line runs right through Dehiwala, so a train from Colombo Fort is a scenic, traffic-free alternative. Southbound trains toward Kalutara, Galle or Matara stop at Dehiwala Railway Station after roughly 15 to 20 minutes, and a second- or third-class ticket costs only LKR 40 to 100. The catch is the last stretch. The station sits about 1.5 km from the zoo, so hop in a tuk-tuk (LKR 100 to 200) or walk around 20 minutes. Trains are best outside the morning and evening commuter rush, when they fill up fast. Check the day's timings at the station, as the coastal-line schedule shifts through the year.
