Which days is the museum open?

The museum runs on a Tuesday-to-Sunday week. Monday is the weekly closed day, and this is recent: the Department of National Museums moved the closure to Mondays on 1 September 2025, so older travel guides that still say "open daily" are out of date. If a Monday is the only free day on your Colombo itinerary, swap the museum for the nearby Gangaramaya Temple or Galle Face Green and come back another morning.

One thing catches first-time visitors out: unlike many Sri Lankan sites, the National Museum now stays open on ordinary monthly Poya (full-moon) days. It closes only on a fixed set of national holidays — Independence Day (4 February), the two Sinhala and Tamil New Year days in mid-April, May Day (1 May) and Vesak Poya Day — on top of its weekly Monday closure. Last entry and ticket counter hours

Doors stay open until 6 PM, but ticket sales close much earlier. The combined Museum and Natural History ticket stops selling at 3 PM, and general single-museum sales end about an hour before closing, under the Department of National Museums schedule. Treat 3 PM as the safe cut-off: arrive after it and you may see the galleries but struggle to buy the combined ticket. For a relaxed look at the main halls plus the Natural History section, aim to be inside by 2 PM at the latest.

Best time to visit and how long to spend

Early on a weekday morning is the quietest slot. Open the day here at 9 AM, before the tour coaches and school groups arrive, and the big galleries are calm enough to read the labels and photograph the Kandyan regalia without a crowd. Weekends and the hour after lunch are the busiest. Most visitors spend two to three hours across the main building; add another 30 to 45 minutes if you walk the separate Natural History museum, which keeps the same 9 AM to 6 PM, Tuesday-to-Sunday schedule.
