About National Museum in Colombo

The National Museum of Ceylon is the gateway to another era. With a great collection of coins, ceramics, daggers, bows, arrows, swords, guns, silverware, jewelry waiting around the corner, this place is a must for history buffs and tourists. Maintained by the Department of National Museum, this is the largest museum in Sri Lanka. Founded on the first of January in 1877 by Sir William Henry Gregory, the then British Governor of Ceylon, the building was constructed in an Italian style. It has several branch museums in Jaffna, Kandy, and Ratnapura, as well as six other locations.

In order to better showcase the Colombo Museum history, this museum houses the National Library as well, and by law, a copy of every document published in Sri Lanka is deposited at the library. A huge collection of art depicting the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Kandy era is available at the National Museum. This besides, there are exquisite and elaborate oil paintings and figurines depicting early village life, the advanced engineering skills of early Sri Lankans, and the evolution of their culture as a whole at the National Museum Colombo Sri Lanka. There are also several Buddhist statuettes and artifacts that shine light into the spread of Buddhism in Ceylon. Check out some Colombo museum photos to understand the amazing cultural heritage showcased there.

With its imposing white structure on Albert Crescent Street, this is a place to behold, and possibly one of the oldest buildings in Ceylon. National Museum of Ceylon in Colombo is also quite close to some equally great tourist spots and attractions such as Viharamahadevi Park and Arcade Independence Square. It also has a second building for Natural History. The National Museum is close to Old Town Hall as well, which is another great tourist spot. The Colombo Museum Entrance Fee differs for different people, based on their age and nationality among other factors. Make sure to find out the Colombo Museum open days before planning a day out there.
