A foreign adult pays LKR 3,540 to enter the Royal Botanical Garden at Peradeniya in 2026, and an Indian passport holder pays exactly the same, because the botanic gardens give no SAARC discount. A Sri Lankan adult pays just LKR 200. There is no single flat ticket that everyone buys here. What you pay turns on two things only: the passport you carry and your age. Foreigner vs local vs child, student and senior: who pays what

The question we hear most from Indian travellers is whether their passport earns a cheaper ticket here, the way it sometimes does at temple sites. It does not. Sri Lanka's national botanic gardens charge every foreign passport the same foreign-adult rate, so an Indian family pays LKR 3,540 per adult, the same as a visitor from the UK or Australia. Budget for that number, not a discounted one.

Children travel cheaper. A foreign child aged 5 to 12 pays LKR 1,770, and under-fives walk in free. Foreign students get a genuine break at LKR 2,360, but only on production of a valid student ID at the counter, so carry it. Sri Lankan nationals sit in a different band entirely: LKR 200 for an adult, LKR 30 for a school child, and LKR 50 for a senior over 60 who shows a National Identity Card.

One number confuses a lot of visitors. The gazetted base fee for a foreign adult is LKR 3,000, but the counter charges LKR 3,540 because an 18 percent VAT is added on top. So if an older page quotes 3,000, it is showing the pre-tax figure. The price you actually hand over at the gate in 2026 is 3,540.

Opening hours and the ticket counter

The garden is open every day of the year, from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. The ticket counter stops selling at about 5:00 pm, an hour before the gates close, so plan to be at the entrance by mid-afternoon at the latest. Peradeniya is big. Most visitors spend two to three hours walking the main loop, and the light is softest for photographs in the first hour after opening and again late in the day.

Extra charges: camera, electric buggy and parking

The entry ticket is the main charge, and there is no separate camera or photography fee for ordinary visitors walking the grounds. If the 147 acres feel like a lot of ground to cover on foot, the garden runs electric buggies: a 4-seater costs about LKR 1,000 per hour and an 8-seater about LKR 2,000 per hour, paid on site. Vehicle parking at the gate is charged separately. None of this is compulsory, and the ticket in the table above is all you need to walk in.

What your ticket gets you

Peradeniya is the largest botanical garden in Sri Lanka, laid out across 147 acres in a loop of the Mahaweli River about 6 km from Kandy. It was formally established in 1843 with plants shipped from Kew, though the site had been a royal garden under Kandyan kings long before that. Today it holds more than 4,000 plant species, and the official Department of National Botanic Gardens manages it.

The ticket gets you the full run of the grounds. The Orchid House alone holds hundreds of varieties under glass. On the Great Lawn, a single giant Javan fig tree spreads an umbrella of branches wide enough to shade a cricket match. There is a stately avenue of royal palms, a 40-metre grove of Burmese giant bamboo, and the famous Cannonball tree planted by King George V and Queen Mary in 1901, with its heavy, rust-coloured fruit clustered on the trunk. Allow time for the suspension bridge over the Mahaweli and the memorial trees planted by visiting heads of state.

How to buy tickets and plan your visit

Buying is simple. There is no pre-booking and no official online ticket. You pay in cash at the counter beside the main gate at Peradeniya, so carry small notes, as change for large bills can be slow.
