History of Peradeniya Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Gardens were initially created by the Kandyan Kings for purposes of growing tea and rubber plantations. However, after the British took over Kandy, the garden was used as Lord Mountbatten’s headquarters. It was also used by the Britishers to take a walk and relax amidst the lush green gardens. It was later developed into a garden with numerous fruits, rare orchids, tall palm trees and various seedlings of foreign plants. The garden reminds the Sri Lankans of the architectural and creative capabilities of the Kandian kings. The Britishers may have modified the garden but the main idea and structure remain the same to this date.
