About Botanical Gardens in Kandy

The Royal Botanical Gardens in Kandy was once upon a time a walking place for the Britishers and was accessible to the royals of the Kandian era. However, now everyone is allowed to take a stroll along with the lush green gardens of the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens in Kandy. The gardens are a big hit amongst visitors because of its collection of rare flowers, plants, fruits, and trees. It is also considered an important part of the Sri Lankan history and culture. The gardens allow tourists to take a walk around the beautiful gardens and also shop for different plants, flowers, and gardening tools at the shops situated right outside the Botanical Gardens. Tourists can also visit and have a scrumptious meal at the restaurant on the premises of the garden. You can hire a guide to explain the medicinal properties, growing technique, uses of various fruits and conditions needed for each plant and also be informed about the origin of the names of each fruit and flower. The Botanical Gardens in Kandy should be in your must-visit list while touring around the city of Kandy.

History of Peradeniya Botanical Gardens

The Botanical Gardens were initially created by the Kandyan Kings for purposes of growing tea and rubber plantations. However, after the British took over Kandy, the garden was used as Lord Mountbatten’s headquarters. It was also used by the Britishers to take a walk and relax amidst the lush green gardens. It was later developed into a garden with numerous fruits, rare orchids, tall palm trees and various seedlings of foreign plants. The garden reminds the Sri Lankans of the architectural and creative capabilities of the Kandian kings. The Britishers may have modified the garden but the main idea and structure remain the same to this date.

Other Botanical Gardens

The Botanical Gardens are the much sought after tourist attraction in Kandy. However, after visiting the Peradeniya, take a look at the other Botanical Gardens that Sri Lanka has to offer. Each garden has its own charm and beauty regarding the availability of plants and trees. So, check out the other massive Botanical Gardens with lush greenery and various fruits and flowers.

Hakgala Botanical Garden

Hakgala Botanical Garden is the second largest Botanical Garden in Sri Lanka. It is situated in Nuwara Eliya and has a cool temperature. It was initially built to take care of tea cultivation but now tourists can see a variety of subtropical fruits and plants.

Seethawaka Botanical Garden

Seethawaka Botanical Gardens was created for rubber and tea cultivation in the 20th century. Now, tourists will find a variety of Bamboo and endemic plant species that need to be protected. So, you may not get to buy these beautiful plants but will get to view and know a lot about the uses of so many vulnerable plant species in the garden.

Henarathgoda Botanical Garden

Henarathgoda Botanical Garden is a garden that mainly has rubber growing plants and trees. The seeds for rubber cultivation was brought in from the Amazon forest which led to the creation of Henarathgoda Botanical Garden. Tourists can roam around the garden and know about the stories connected to the reason for the presence of a few special trees in the garden. So, the next time you chance upon Sri Lanka, do visit all the Botanical Gardens especially the Peradeniya Botanical Garden.

    • Trip to Kandy

First of all let me start with the sales agent Mr.darshana, I just gave him the no. of days I would be visiting Sri Lanka and he was amazingly quick to put together a plan for us in a couple of minutes, his choices of hotels were amazing, especially the views from the rooms. Their prices are reasonable and services are excellent. We landed on 6th august,2019 in SL and the guide(Mr.Ramesh) was waiting for us patiently with the name board,he was not difficult to find. He was courteous and polite and helped us board the vehicle and start our trip to the different destination in sri lanka. We travelled from Colombo->Kandy->Nuweraellaya->ella->Beruwala(water sports and river safari). They even plan a day trip to visit the town of Galle from beruwala. I would definitely suggest Relax Lanka Tours to anyone travelling to Sri Lanka.

The Driver was not good all he wanted was to make commission. He was late to pick us up 2 times because of which we missed the kandy festival........ when we had to go pinnawala Elephant Orphanage he took us to the private spot where we could ride elephants but those elephants were very dirty even in Nuwara Eliya he told us to take pictues from far away and he knew nothing about the waterfall there and was so confident about the little knowledge he had but that knowledge was wrong too.............. Even on the last day when we were to depart we had to take an uber because this guy was late we were actually at the boarding gate when we got his call that he was waiting outside, terrible service by the driver..... only giving five because the hotel was good and sri lanka is a good place to visit but not with this agent

    • Trip to Kandy

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Sri Lanka which lasted from 6th July 2019 to 18th July 2019. Everything was made super easy and accessible during the trip due to a responsible driver, AC car and good food. Sri Lanka is truly very peaceful, clean and green country with hospitable and welcoming people. For instance, we were served fresh juices everytime we checked-in in a hotel. This is indeed the best family trip of our life. Thanks to your company 'Amara Lanka Tours' :) Honestly this trip on the whole was an excellent and unforgettable memory itself! To point out, the spectacular Nine Arch Bridge was good for photography. One memorable experience in Nuwara Eliya was staying in luxurious hotels located at the peak of cloudy mountains with waterfall gushing in front and dark-green gardens beneath us. We enjoyed the elephant ride at the Elephant Orphanage in Sirigiya. Moreover, the train ride from Nuwara Eliya to Ella became an unforgettable experience because of a wonderful scenery we enjoyed from a great height with cold winds splashing our faces. We had a great shopping experience in Colombo in stores like Kandy Uptown and Glitz. Furthermore, watching tea production encouraged us to buy their good-quality teas for our family and friends. Handeling delicate and small turtles was fun along with watching 75 years old turtles at a turtle hatchery. Undoubtedly Sri Lanka is rich in natural beauty and deserves more and more tourists.

Travel triangle just about did everything right in facilitating our 6 day visit to Srilanka. Udani traels,Sri Lanka were efficient and always available for any assistance. The hotels they booked at both in Kandy as well as Bentota turned out to be excellent. All together a very enjoyabel experience. The hotel stay at Grand Kandian,Kandy,as well as Earl Reef Bentota were excellent choices, and credit to Udani holidays for choosing the best of hotels. The travel guide maduranga proved to be very versatile and knew just about everything ,including places to dine. The beaches of Bentota,as well as sea food cuisine in the sea resorts are at par with the best in the world.
