Bangkok Travel FAQs
Is Khao San Road safe at night?
Yes, for most visitors it is safe. It is busy and well policed, and the real risks are overcharging and petty theft rather than violence. Keep your drink in sight, your phone and cash zipped away, and agree tuk-tuk prices before you ride. Go out in a group or share your plan, save the Tourist Police number 1155, and you will almost certainly have an easy night.
What time do the bars and clubs close?
The road is quietest around 7pm, peaks near 10pm, and most bars wind down after 2am, though closing times shift by venue and season and enforcement varies. Because the exact hours move, check the dedicated Khao San Road timings page before you plan a late one rather than trusting a sign on the door.
Is there a dress code for Khao San Road bars and clubs?
This is the least dressy nightlife in Bangkok. Shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops are completely normal, and only a few clubs ask for closed shoes or long trousers. Wear something you would not mind getting splashed with a bucket, keep footwear you can walk in, and carry ID because clubs can ask for it at the door.
What are the most common scams, and how do I avoid them?
The classics are the tuk-tuk "10-baht tour" that ends at a gem shop, the "it's closed today" temple line, padded bills at ping-pong-show bars, counterfeit alcohol, and being asked for your passport as a scooter deposit. Avoid all of them by agreeing prices upfront, using Grab, sticking to sealed branded drinks, checking bills before paying, and never handing over your passport.
How much does a night out on Khao San Road cost?
Budget roughly Rs 800 to Rs 2,000 a head for a relaxed night of a few drinks, which is about 280 to 700 THB. A shared bucket runs 200 to 400 THB (Rs 570 to Rs 1,140), a local beer 100 to 250 THB (Rs 285 to Rs 715), and a club cover, where charged, 200 to 300 THB. Street food is a few hundred baht more. Carry cash in small notes.
Is Khao San Road good for first-timers, solo travellers and women?
Yes to all three. It is one of the easiest places in Bangkok to go out alone because it is compact, crowded and policed, and it is simple to meet other travellers. Stay in the lit main lane, keep your drink with you, tell someone your plan or share your location, and use Grab to get home. Many solo and women travellers have a great, uneventful night here.
What is a bucket, and what should I drink?
A bucket is a small plastic pail holding a quarter-bottle of spirit, a mixer and a can of Red Bull, built for sharing and famous for sneaking up on you. Treat one bucket as two or three real drinks and pace yourself. If buckets are not your thing, local beers like Chang, Leo and Singha and simple cocktails are everywhere and cheap.
How do I get to Khao San Road and back late at night?
There is no metro on the road itself; the nearest is MRT Sam Yot about 1.5 km away, with the Phra Athit river pier close by for daytime boats. At night use Grab, a metered taxi or a tuk-tuk with an agreed price, and keep your hotel card handy. Grab is easiest because the fare is fixed. See the how-to-reach page for full route detail.
Is Khao San Road open every day, and which nights are busiest?
There is action every night of the week, but Friday and Saturday are the biggest, and the crowd swells further around Thai holidays and the Songkran water festival in April. Weeknights are calmer and easier for a quieter drink. For the specific opening and closing hours, check the timings page.
Can I find vegetarian, vegan or Indian food on Khao San Road?
Yes. The street food carts and small cafes cover plenty of vegetarian and vegan pad thai, spring rolls, fresh fruit and smoothies, and there are Indian and halal options a short walk away in the Phra Athit and Soi Rambuttri area. Tell the cook "jay" for strictly vegetarian, and stick to busy stalls with a fast turnover.
