Cool season (November to February): peak season

This is why people come. Daytime highs hover around 28 to 30 C, mornings are crisp, and December and January nights can drop to 13 to 15 C, cold enough that Doi Suthep and the Doi Inthanon summit genuinely need a fleece. Skies are clear, the rice terraces are still green from the rains, and the November lantern festivals fall inside this window. The catch is simple. Everyone else knows this too, so hotels run their highest rates and the Old City books out, especially around Yi Peng and over Christmas and New Year. Book six to eight weeks ahead for the best rooms.

Hot season (March to May): the one to time carefully

March and April are the hottest months, with afternoons often pushing 36 to 40 C. Heat alone would still make this a workable budget window, quiet and cheap. The real problem is the smoke that sits over the north from late February into April. First rains usually arrive in May, the temperature eases, and the air scrubs clean, which makes May a quietly good month that most visitors overlook.

Green season (June to October): best value

Thailand's "rainy" season sounds worse than it is. In Chiang Mai the rain typically comes as a heavy hour or two in the late afternoon, then clears, so most days still have long dry stretches for temples, markets and cooking classes. September is the wettest month. In return you get the greenest countryside, the fullest waterfalls at Doi Inthanon, the thinnest crowds and the lowest prices of the year. Burning Season and Air Quality: What to Know

This is the single most important section for anyone deciding when to visit Chiang Mai, and the one most guides skip.

From roughly mid-February to April, farmers across northern Thailand and neighbouring countries burn crop stubble and forest to clear land. The smoke settles in the Chiang Mai valley and pushes air quality into unhealthy and sometimes hazardous territory. The worst of it is usually late February through March. In 2026 the pattern held hard: on 4 March 2026 Chiang Mai ranked among the ten most polluted major cities in the world with an AQI above 150, and by 30 March 2026 it topped the global list at AQI 233, a "very unhealthy" reading for everyone, according to IQAir. Conditions typically start improving in late April as the first storms arrive.

Who should avoid the burning season

Anyone with asthma, respiratory conditions or heart problems.

Young children and older travellers.

Anyone whose trip is built around trekking, viewpoints or photography. The haze flattens the views that draw people to the mountains in the first place.

If your dates are locked into March or early April, it is still doable: build an indoor-leaning plan (cooking classes, spas, temples, cafes), pack an N95-grade mask, pick a hotel with good air filtration, and check a live AQI app each morning. But if you can move the trip, move it. The cool season and the green season both give you clean air.

Festivals and Events by Month

For many travellers the festival is the reason to time the trip. These are the fixed points worth planning around. Lantern and Songkran dates draw huge crowds, so book well ahead.
