How To Reach Chiang Mai From Mumbai

Discover All The Wonderful Gems Of Chiang Mai

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6534 reviews )

By AirBy RoadBy TrainBy Sea
Mumbai to Chiang Mai8.0 hours97.0 hours--

There is no direct flight from Mumbai to Chiang Mai. The only practical way to make this trip is to fly, connecting through a hub, most often Bangkok, sometimes Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Flights leave from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) and land at Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), a two-leg journey because Chiang Mai sits inland in northern Thailand. Plan on about 8 to 9 hours in the air on a typical one-stop routing, with one-way fares starting near Rs 14,500. Below is exactly how the route works, what it costs, which airlines fly it, and how to get from CNX into the old city once you land.

Mumbai to Chiang Mai at a Glance

The quick answer, before the detail.

Question Answer
Direct flight? No. Every option connects through at least one hub (Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore).
Fastest flight time About 6 hours 30 minutes on the quickest connection. Typical one-stop routings run 8 to 9 hours.
Cheapest one-way fare From about Rs 14,500. Return fares start near Rs 34,550.
Cheapest carrier Thai Lion Air is usually the lowest fare on the route. Thai AirAsia and Thai Vietjet are close.
Main connecting hub Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi BKK / Don Mueang DMK). Kuala Lumpur (KUL) is often the fastest stopover.
Cheapest month to book March tends to have the lowest fares. Book 40 to 90 days ahead.
Arrival airport Chiang Mai International (CNX), about 3 km from the old city, roughly 15 minutes by taxi or Grab.
Is road or rail an option? Not realistically. There is no through train or bus from India; the overland route crosses Myanmar and is not a practical traveller option.

How to Reach Chiang Mai From Mumbai by Flight

Air is the only sensible way to cover this route, and every itinerary involves a stop. Mumbai has no non-stop service to Chiang Mai, so your ticket will route through a Southeast Asian hub where you change planes for the final leg into CNX. The choice of hub is what decides your total travel time and, often, your fare.

Bangkok is the workhorse connection. Most Indian travellers fly Mumbai to Bangkok, then take a short domestic hop up to Chiang Mai. Kuala Lumpur (KUL) frequently posts the quickest overall connection, while Singapore (SIN) is a comfortable, if usually pricier, third option. Booking in advance genuinely matters here: fares swing hard in peak season (roughly December to February and around Songkran in April), and last-minute one-stop tickets can cost far more than a fare booked six to eight weeks out.

A quick word on why it is two legs. Chiang Mai is an inland northern city, so unlike a beach destination you cannot land right beside it from Mumbai. You clear the international leg at a hub, then fly (or, if you have time, train) the last stretch. The next sections cover both the airlines that fly the through-route and the last-leg options once you reach Thailand.

Airlines and Routes From Mumbai to Chiang Mai

Carriers that commonly appear on the BOM to CNX search, with their usual routing. Fares and exact timings shift daily; confirm live before booking.

Airline Stops Usual hub(s) Approx. total time Fare band (one-way)
Thai Lion Air 1 stop Bangkok (DMK) ~8 to 9 hrs From ~Rs 14,500 (usually cheapest)
Thai AirAsia 1 stop Bangkok / Kuala Lumpur ~8 to 10 hrs Budget, from ~Rs 15,000
Thai Vietjet 1 to 2 stops Bangkok ~9 to 12 hrs Budget
Malaysia Airlines 1 stop Kuala Lumpur (KUL) ~7 to 9 hrs Mid-range
Singapore Airlines 1 stop Singapore (SIN) ~8 to 10 hrs Premium
Air India / IndiGo 1 stop Bangkok ~8 to 11 hrs Mid-range
Thai Airways 1 stop Bangkok (BKK) ~8 to 10 hrs Mid to premium

Mumbai to Chiang Mai Flight Cost and the Cheapest Time to Book

Budget a one-way fare from about Rs 14,500 and a return from about Rs 34,550 on the cheaper carriers. Premium full-service airlines through Singapore or on Thai Airways run higher. Two levers move the price more than anything else: when you book, and which day you fly.

 • Book early. The 40 to 90 day window before departure tends to have the best one-stop fares. Inside two weeks, prices climb steeply.

 • Fly cheap months. March is typically the lowest-fare month on this route, with February close behind. December to February is peak demand for northern     Thailand, so fares firm up.

 • Mid-week and Saturday departures often undercut Friday and Sunday flights. Flexible dates on the search can save a fifth of the fare.

If you would rather not juggle two separate tickets and a self-transfer at the hub, a Chiang Mai or wider Thailand tour package can bundle the flights, the Bangkok to Chiang Mai leg and hotels into one booking, which also protects you if the first leg runs late.

The Last Leg: Bangkok to Chiang Mai

Once you land in Bangkok, three options carry you the final 700-odd kilometres north to Chiang Mai.

 • Domestic flight (fastest). Thai AirAsia, Thai Vietjet, Nok Air and Bangkok Airways run frequent Bangkok to Chiang Mai hops of about 1 hour 10 minutes.       This is what most travellers on a package take.

 • Overnight train (most scenic). At least 5 trains a day run from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. The fastest leaves at 08:30 and completes the journey in about 11      hours. An overnight sleeper departs around 18:10 and reaches Chiang Mai station near 07:15, so you save a night's hotel and wake up in the north.

 • VIP bus / coach (budget). Deluxe and tourist coaches leave from Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal and the Khao San Road area, taking roughly 10 to 12 hours     overnight.

This two-leg structure is the honest reality of reaching Chiang Mai from Mumbai, and it is where a Mumbai-specific plan beats a generic fare page: you are booking India to Bangkok, then Bangkok to CNX, not one clean hop.

Arriving at Chiang Mai Airport (CNX): Getting Into the City

Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) sits only about 3 km from the old city, one of the closest airport-to-centre distances of any major Thai city. The ride into town takes around 15 minutes. Your options on arrival:

 • Airport taxi from the official counter, a fixed fare into the old city.

 • Grab (the ride-hailing app used across Thailand), usually the cheapest metered option.

 • Songthaew (the red shared pickup trucks), the local, low-cost way to reach the moat and Nimman areas.

Because CNX is so close in, you can be checked into a hotel near Tha Phae Gate within half an hour of clearing arrivals.

Why Road or Rail From India Is Not a Real Option

You may see a figure of roughly 4,600 km and 90-plus hours quoted for a Mumbai to Chiang Mai drive. Treat it as trivia, not a plan. There is no through bus or train from India to Thailand. Any overland route has to cross Myanmar, which means special permits, a vehicle carnet, closed or restricted border sections, and 12 to 15 days on the road. It is not a route ordinary travellers can book. India also runs no international passenger trains toward Thailand. In short, fly to a hub, then take the short last leg. The only place trains and buses are useful is inside Thailand, for that Bangkok to Chiang Mai stretch covered above.

Visa and Entry Requirements (India to Thailand)

Indian passport holders need valid entry authorisation for Thailand. Check the current 2026 rule before you fly, as Thailand has changed its policy for Indian visitors more than once recently (visa-on-arrival and e-visa arrangements have both applied). Apply through the official Thai e-Visa portal rather than a third-party agent, carry proof of onward or return travel and a hotel booking, and make sure your passport has at least six months of validity and a blank page. A tour operator booking your trip will normally guide the current paperwork.

Plan Your Chiang Mai Trip From Mumbai

Sorting the two-leg journey, the hub connection and the CNX transfer yourself is doable, but it is fiddly. A Thailand tour package that includes Chiang Mai bundles the flights, the Bangkok to Chiang Mai leg, hotels and transfers into one itinerary you can customise, and gives you a single point of contact if a connection slips. For the wider picture of the city, see the Chiang Mai travel guide, the things to do in Chiang Mai and the top places to visit in Chiang Mai.

Flying from another city? We map the route the same way for Chiang Mai from Delhi, from Bangalore and from Chennai. For every route into the city, see the full how to reach Chiang Mai guide.

"On the Mumbai route, book the Bangkok connection with a longer layover than the minimum. A 3-hour stop clears immigration and the terminal change comfortably; a 90-minute one is where people miss the Chiang Mai leg," says our Thailand travel desk.

Fares, durations and airline routings on this page are checked by our Thailand desk against live aggregator data and updated for 2026.

Hey Travel Trail, Dear Yugal I hope this review finds you in high spirits! I wanted to take a moment to express my utmost gratitude for organizing the most incredible trip to Thailand. From start to finish, every aspect of the journey was meticulously planned, and I couldn't have asked for a bett

The check-in process was seamless. The accommodation itself was beyond my expectations.I really love the swimming pool and the buffet breakfast. Beyond the hotel, the itinerary you crafted for us was diverse and captivating. From exploring the bustling streets of Bangkok to immersing myself in the natural wonders of Phuket, every destination left an indelible mark on my heart. I will undoubtedly recommend your travel agency to my friends, family, and colleagues who are seeking an extraordinary travel experience. Your attention to detail, professionalism, and commitment to customer satisfaction are truly commendable. Once again, thank you for making my Thailand trip so special. Yugal was our travel agent. He was always available from the day we booked the trip till we completed our trip. He was always a call away and was helpful to resolve all the queries. His commitment was commendable. We took 4 night 5 days package. The hotels we stayed were fortunately good. Cab serv
ices were not as much cooperative as expected. I would suggest to include most imp tourist spots of bangkok/pattaya in basic package itself. Like we had a bangkok city tour in our package but reclining budha/watarun temple was not part of it. Better to have it included in basic packages which would improve customer satisfaction. But overall it was a good and hustle free experience.

    Chiang Mai Travel FAQs

Is there a direct flight from Mumbai to Chiang Mai?

No. There is no non-stop service between Mumbai (BOM) and Chiang Mai (CNX). Every itinerary connects through at least one hub, most commonly Bangkok, sometimes Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. You fly the international leg to the hub, then take a short flight (or train) up to Chiang Mai. Expect one stop and about 8 to 9 hours of total travel on a good connection.

How long is the flight from Mumbai to Chiang Mai?

The quickest connections run about 6 hours 30 minutes, but a typical one-stop routing takes 8 to 9 hours once you include the layover. Longer or badly-timed connections can stretch to 12 hours or more, so compare total journey time, not just flying time, when you book.

What is the cheapest way to get from Mumbai to Chiang Mai?

Flying a budget carrier such as Thai Lion Air, Thai AirAsia or Thai Vietjet through Bangkok is usually the cheapest, with one-way fares from around Rs 14,500. Book 40 to 90 days ahead and stay flexible on dates. A package that bundles the flights and the Bangkok to Chiang Mai leg can also work out competitive once hotels are included.

Which airlines fly from Mumbai to Chiang Mai?

There is no single carrier flying the whole route non-stop, but Thai Lion Air, Thai AirAsia, Thai Vietjet, Thai Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Air India and IndiGo all appear on the connecting search, routing through Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Thai Lion Air is typically the lowest fare.

Which layover is best, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore?

Bangkok is the most convenient because it has the most onward flights to Chiang Mai, so if a connection is delayed you have the most rebooking options. Kuala Lumpur often shows the fastest overall time on budget carriers, and Singapore is the most comfortable but usually the priciest. Leave at least a 3-hour layover to change terminals safely.

How do I get from Chiang Mai Airport to the city?

Chiang Mai International (CNX) is only about 3 km from the old city, roughly 15 minutes away. Take an airport taxi from the official counter, book a Grab, or hop on a red songthaew shared truck for the cheapest ride. You can be at a hotel near Tha Phae Gate within half an hour of landing.

What is the cheapest month to book Mumbai to Chiang Mai flights?

March tends to have the lowest fares, with February close behind. December to February is peak season for northern Thailand and around Songkran in April demand spikes, so fares are higher. Booking 40 to 90 days out and flying mid-week or on a Saturday usually gives the best price.

Do I need a visa to travel from India to Thailand?

Yes, Indian travellers need valid entry authorisation for Thailand, but the exact rule has changed recently, so confirm the current 2026 policy on the official Thai e-Visa portal before you fly. Carry proof of return travel, a hotel booking and a passport valid for at least six months. A tour operator will usually guide the current paperwork.

How do I get from Bangkok to Chiang Mai once I land in Thailand?

Three ways: a domestic flight of about 1 hour 10 minutes (fastest, on Thai AirAsia, Thai Vietjet, Nok Air or Bangkok Airways), an overnight train (at least 5 a day, the sleeper leaves around 18:10 and arrives near 07:15), or a VIP overnight coach of roughly 10 to 12 hours. The flight suits most itineraries; the sleeper train saves a hotel night.
