How To Reach Chiang Mai From Delhi

Discover All The Wonderful Gems Of Chiang Mai

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6533 reviews )

By AirBy RoadBy TrainBy Sea
New Delhi to Chiang Mai12.0 hours80.0 hours--

There is no direct flight from Delhi to Chiang Mai. You reach it by air on a connecting ticket that changes planes at a hub, almost always Bangkok, occasionally Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Flights leave Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) and land at Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), and because Chiang Mai sits inland in northern Thailand it is a clean two-leg journey. Delhi has one real advantage: it flies non-stop to Bangkok in about four and a half hours, so the honest routing is Delhi to Bangkok, then a short hop up to Chiang Mai. On the quickest one-stop connection the whole trip runs about 6 hours 15 minutes, with one-way fares from roughly Rs 16,000. Here is exactly how the route works, what it costs, which airlines fly it, the 2026 visa position for Indians, and how to get from CNX into the old city once you land.

Delhi to Chiang Mai at a Glance

The quick answer, before the detail.

Question Answer
Direct flight? No. Every option connects through at least one hub. Bangkok handles most of the traffic; Kuala Lumpur and Singapore are the alternates.
Fastest flight time About 6 hours 15 minutes on the quickest connection (Thai Airways via Bangkok). Typical one-stop routings run 7 to 11 hours door to gate, depending on the layover.
Cheapest one-way fare From about Rs 16,000 on the cheapest carriers, with promo fares occasionally near Rs 10,400. Return fares start around Rs 30,000.
Cheapest carrier Thai Lion Air and Thai AirAsia are usually the lowest. Malaysia Airlines and Bangkok Airways also post low promo fares.
Main connecting hub Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi BKK or Don Mueang DMK) carries most one-stop itineraries. Delhi also flies non-stop to Bangkok, which keeps the connection clean.
Cheapest month to fly March tends to have the lowest fares, with November also cheap. May is peak. Book 40 to 90 days ahead.
Flight distance About 2,470 km in a straight line, DEL to CNX. By road it is roughly 3,790 km.
Time difference Chiang Mai is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of Delhi.
Arrival airport Chiang Mai International (CNX), about 3 to 4 km from the old city, roughly 15 minutes by taxi or Grab.
Is road or rail an option? Not realistically. There is no through train or bus from India; the overland route crosses Myanmar and is not a practical traveller option.

How to Reach Chiang Mai From Delhi by Flight

Air is the only sensible way to cover this route, and every itinerary involves a stop. Delhi has no non-stop service to Chiang Mai, so your ticket routes through a Southeast Asian hub where you change planes for the final leg into CNX. Bangkok is the workhorse connection, and this is where Delhi has the edge over smaller Indian metros: DEL flies non-stop to Bangkok on Air India, IndiGo and Thai Airways in about four and a half hours, and from Bangkok there are around 15 flights a day making the short 1 hour 20 minute hop to Chiang Mai. Fly the direct leg to Bangkok, connect to CNX, and the whole trip is genuinely simple.

Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and Singapore (SIN) also feed the route, sometimes cheaper on a budget carrier, though they add a longer detour. A quick word on why it is two legs. Chiang Mai is an inland northern city, so unlike a beach destination you cannot land right beside it from Delhi. You clear the international leg at a hub, then fly the last stretch. Booking ahead matters: fares swing hard in peak season, roughly December to February and around Songkran in April, and a last-minute one-stop ticket costs far more than one booked six to eight weeks out.

Airlines and Routes From Delhi to Chiang Mai

Carriers that commonly appear on the DEL to CNX search, with their usual routing. Fares and exact timings shift daily, so confirm live before you book.

Airline Stops Usual hub(s) Approx. total time Fare band (one-way)
Thai Lion Air 1 stop Bangkok (DMK) ~7 to 10 hrs From ~Rs 16,000 (often cheapest)
Thai AirAsia / AirAsia 1 stop Bangkok (DMK) / Kuala Lumpur ~7 to 11 hrs Budget, from ~Rs 17,000
IndiGo 1 stop Bangkok (BKK) ~7 to 10 hrs Mid-range, direct DEL to BKK leg
Air India 1 stop Bangkok (BKK) ~7 to 10 hrs Mid-range, direct DEL to BKK leg
Thai Airways 1 stop Bangkok (BKK) ~6h15m and up Mid to premium, direct DEL to BKK leg
Malaysia Airlines / Batik Air 1 stop Kuala Lumpur (KUL) ~8 to 11 hrs Mid-range, low promo fares
Bangkok Airways 1 stop Bangkok (BKK) ~7 to 10 hrs Mid-range, occasional low promo
Singapore Airlines / Scoot 1 stop Singapore (SIN) ~9 to 12 hrs Premium (Scoot cheaper)

Delhi to Chiang Mai Flight Cost and the Cheapest Time to Book

Budget a one-way fare from about Rs 16,000 and a return from about Rs 30,000 on the cheaper carriers, which is roughly USD 190 to 360 depending on the routing. Promo fares occasionally dip near Rs 10,400. Premium full-service airlines through Singapore, or a fast Thai Airways connection, run higher. Two levers move the price more than anything else: when you book, and which month you fly.

 • Book early. The 40 to 90 day window before departure tends to have the best one-stop fares. Inside two weeks, prices climb steeply.

 • Fly cheap months. March is typically the lowest-fare month on this route, with November close behind. December to February is peak demand for                 northern  Thailand, and May firms up too, so fares harden well ahead.

 • Return and one-stop beats fastest. Booking a return, and accepting a one-stop rather than the quickest routing, usually saves 20 to 35 percent over a           walk-up one-way fare.

If you would rather not juggle two separate tickets and a self-transfer at the hub, a Chiang Mai or wider Thailand tour package can bundle the flights, the Bangkok to Chiang Mai leg and hotels into one booking, which also protects you if the first leg runs late.

Distance, Flight Time and the Time Difference

The straight-line distance from Delhi to Chiang Mai is about 2,470 km (roughly 1,538 miles). That is short enough that the flying itself is quick; almost all of the door-to-door time goes on the layover, not the air legs. On paper the two flight segments add up to a little over five hours in the air, but a realistic one-stop journey runs 7 to 11 hours once you count the connection at Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. The fastest schedule, a tight Thai Airways connection through Bangkok, comes in near 6 hours 15 minutes.

One detail worth setting your watch for: Chiang Mai is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of Delhi. A flight that leaves Delhi at 11 pm and takes eight hours lands at CNX around 8:30 am local time, not 7 am. Factor that into your first-day plans and any onward transfer.

The Last Leg: Bangkok to Chiang Mai

Once you land in Bangkok, three options carry you the final 700-odd kilometres north to Chiang Mai.

 • Domestic flight (fastest). Thai AirAsia, Thai Vietjet, Nok Air and Bangkok Airways run frequent Bangkok to Chiang Mai hops of about 1 hour 20 minutes,        roughly 15 a day. This is what most travellers take, and it keeps the whole Delhi trip to a single travel day.

 • Overnight train (most scenic). The State Railway of Thailand runs sleeper and day trains from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, taking about 11 to 15 hours. An          overnight sleeper saves a night's hotel and wakes you up in the north.

 • VIP bus or coach (budget). Deluxe and tourist coaches leave from Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal and the Khao San Road area, taking roughly 9 to 12 hours     overnight.

This two-leg structure is the honest reality of reaching Chiang Mai from Delhi, and it is where a Delhi-specific plan beats a generic fare page. You are booking Delhi to Bangkok, then Bangkok to CNX, not one clean hop.

Arriving at Chiang Mai Airport (CNX): Getting Into the City

Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) sits only about 3 to 4 km from the old city, one of the shortest airport-to-centre distances of any major Thai city. The ride into town takes around 15 minutes. Your options on arrival:

 • Airport taxi from the official counter, a fixed fare into the old city.

 • Grab, the ride-hailing app used across Thailand, usually the cheapest metered option.

 • Songthaew, the red shared pickup trucks, the local low-cost way to reach the moat and Nimman areas.

Because CNX is so close in, you can be checked into a hotel near Tha Phae Gate within half an hour of clearing arrivals, ready to start on the best things to do in Chiang Mai or the old-city temples.

Thailand Visa and TDAC for Indian Travellers (2026)

As of August 2026, Indian passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 60 days for tourism, with a possible 30-day extension at a local immigration office. Thailand has changed its rules for Indian visitors more than once in the last two years, so treat this as a check-before-you-book item and confirm the current position on the Royal Thai Embassy New Delhi site or the official Thai e-Visa portal before you fly, rather than trusting a third-party agent.

One requirement is not optional. Every traveller, Indian or otherwise, must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within three days before arrival. It is free, it replaces the old paper TM.6 form, and airlines increasingly check it at the gate, so fill it in once your flight is booked. Carry proof of onward or return travel, a hotel booking for at least the first night, and a passport with at least six months of validity. A tour operator handling your trip will normally walk you through the current paperwork.

Why Road or Rail From India Is Not a Real Option

You may see a figure of roughly 3,790 km and two-plus days quoted for a Delhi to Chiang Mai drive. Treat it as trivia, not a plan. There is no through bus or train from India to Thailand. Any overland route has to cross Myanmar, which means special permits, a vehicle carnet, closed or restricted border sections, and around two weeks on the road. It is not a route an ordinary traveller can book. India also runs no international passenger trains toward Thailand. So the short version is simple: fly to a hub, then take the short last leg. Trains and buses only become useful once you are inside Thailand, for the Bangkok to Chiang Mai stretch covered above.

Best Time to Visit Chiang Mai

The cheapest months to fly line up neatly with a couple of Chiang Mai's quieter travel windows, but the seasons are worth knowing before you fix dates. November to February is cool, dry and the most comfortable time to be in the north, which is also why fares and hotels are dearest. March into April brings the burning season, when farm smoke can haze the valley, so check air-quality forecasts if you travel then. June to October is green-season rain: warm, lush, cheaper, with showers that usually pass. For the month-by-month detail, see the full best time to visit Chiang Mai guide.

Plan Your Chiang Mai Trip From Delhi

Sorting the two-leg journey, the hub connection and the CNX transfer yourself is doable, but it is fiddly. A Thailand tour package that includes Chiang Mai bundles the flights, the Bangkok to Chiang Mai leg, hotels and transfers into one itinerary you can customise, and gives you a single point of contact if a connection slips. For the wider picture of the city, see the Chiang Mai travel guide and the top places to visit in Chiang Mai.

Flying from another city? We map the route the same way for Chiang Mai from Mumbai, from Bangalore and from Chennai. For every route into the city, see the full how to reach Chiang Mai guide.

"From Delhi, book the non-stop to Bangkok and give yourself a three-hour layover before the Chiang Mai hop. That clears immigration and the terminal change comfortably; a 90-minute connection is where people miss the last leg," says our Thailand travel desk.

Fares, durations, airline routings and the 2026 visa position on this page are checked by our Thailand desk against live aggregator data and official sources, and updated for 2026.

Overall, we had a very good experience with our travel agent. The trip was planned well, all commitments were fulfilled as promised, and the coordination throughout the journey was smooth. The team was responsive, professional, and ensured that transfers, sightseeing, and bookings were arranged prop
erly, making the trip hassle-free. The only major disappointment was the hotel selected in Pattaya. The rooms were quite compact, we encountered cockroaches in the room, and the towels provided were not up to the expected standard. This part of the experience could have been much better. The itinerary was well designed overall; however, for some outdoor attractions, scheduling visits during the evening would have been preferable, especially during the summer season, to avoid the intense daytime heat and make sightseeing more comfortable. Despite these points, we appreciate the effort and support provided by the travel agent. The trip was enjoyable, and with a little more attention to hotel selection and timing of certain activities, the experience could have been excellent.

I recently completed my Thailand trip with Travelopedia, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. made the trip completely stress-free for us.

Vrushabh's 7 days trip to Chiang Mai

We recently booked an 11-day, 10-night land package to Thailand with Travtree Holidays, covering Bangkok, Phuket, and Krabi. Traveling with a 2-year-old can be challenging, but the overall experience was smooth and well-coordinated. Our itinerary was packed with great activities. In Bangkok, Safa
ri World was a huge hit with our little one, and the temple tours were beautiful. The Krabi leg was fantastic—the 7 Island Tour and the Jungle Tour were standouts. In Phuket, the Phi Phi Island tour and the Old City tour were both well-managed and enjoyable. Since we only opted for the land package and airport transfers, we relied heavily on their punctuality. The transfers were seamless, which is a massive relief when you’re hauling luggage and a toddler! The only disappointment was the Elephant Sanctuary tour. It felt very rushed, lasting only about an hour and a half, which didn't quite meet our expectations compared to the quality of the other excursions. Overall, we had a wonderful family holiday. Travtree Holidays provided great service and reliable transport. Highly recommended for families looking for a well-organized Thailand experience!

Lizandra's 5 days trip to Chiang Mai

We recently booked our family trip to Thailand with Travtree Holidays, and it turned out to be an absolutely wonderful experience from start to finish. The entire itinerary was very well organized, making the trip smooth and stress-free—especially important when traveling with young children (our ki
ds are 2 and 5 years old). All pick-ups were perfectly on time, and the vehicles provided were clean, comfortable, and spacious, which made commuting easy and relaxing for the whole family. The hotels arranged for us were excellent—family-friendly, comfortable, and conveniently located. Everything was thoughtfully planned, allowing us to enjoy each destination without any hassle. A special mention goes to our visits to Siam Ocean World (sea life) and Safari World & Marine Park. Both experiences were incredibly impressive and became the highlight of our trip. Siam Water World was fantastic for the kids, with exciting views of the sea creatures penguins etc that they thoroughly enjoyed. Safari World was equally amazing—the safari drive and shows were captivating, and seeing the animals up close was a memorable experience for both adults and children. Overall, Travtree Holidays ensured a seamless, enjoyable, and perfectly managed vacation for our family. We truly appreciate their professionalism and attention to detail and would highly recommend them to anyone planning a trip to Thailand—especially families traveling with young kids.

    Chiang Mai Travel FAQs

Is there a direct flight from Delhi to Chiang Mai?

No. There is no non-stop flight between Delhi (DEL) and Chiang Mai (CNX). Every itinerary connects through at least one hub, almost always Bangkok, sometimes Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Delhi does fly non-stop to Bangkok in about four and a half hours, so the cleanest routing is Delhi to Bangkok, then a short 80-minute hop up to Chiang Mai.

How long is the flight from Delhi to Chiang Mai?

The quickest one-stop connection, a tight Thai Airways routing through Bangkok, takes about 6 hours 15 minutes. Most one-stop tickets run 7 to 11 hours door to gate, because the layover, not the flying, is what adds the time. The two air legs together are a little over five hours.

How much does a Delhi to Chiang Mai flight cost?

One-way fares start from about Rs 16,000 on the cheapest carriers such as Thai Lion Air and Thai AirAsia, with promo fares occasionally near Rs 10,400. Returns start around Rs 30,000. Premium routings through Singapore or a fast Thai Airways connection cost more. Fares move daily, so book early and compare.

Which airlines fly from Delhi to Chiang Mai?

On a one-stop basis you will see Thai Lion Air, Thai AirAsia and AirAsia, IndiGo, Air India, Thai Airways, Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air, Bangkok Airways, and Scoot or Singapore Airlines. Most route through Bangkok; Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air go via Kuala Lumpur, and Scoot via Singapore.

What is the cheapest month to fly from Delhi to Chiang Mai?

March is typically the lowest-fare month, with November close behind. December to February is peak season in northern Thailand and May firms up too, so those months cost more. Booking 40 to 90 days ahead usually lands the best one-stop fare.

How far is Chiang Mai from Delhi?

About 2,470 km in a straight line (roughly 1,538 miles). By road it is around 3,790 km, but that route crosses Myanmar and is not a practical option for travellers, so the flight distance is the number that matters.

What is the time difference between Delhi and Chiang Mai?

Chiang Mai, on Thailand time, is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of Delhi. When it is 12 noon in Delhi it is 1:30 pm in Chiang Mai. Add that to your arrival time when you plan the first day.

Do Indians need a visa for Chiang Mai or Thailand in 2026?

As of August 2026, Indian passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 60 days for tourism. The policy has changed more than once recently, so confirm the current rule on the Royal Thai Embassy New Delhi site or the official Thai e-Visa portal before booking. Separately, everyone must complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within three days before arrival.

Can you travel from Delhi to Chiang Mai by road or train?

Not realistically. There is no through train or bus from India to Thailand, and any overland drive has to cross Myanmar, which needs special permits and passes through restricted border sections. Flying to a hub and taking the short last leg is the only practical way. Trains and buses are useful only once you are inside Thailand.

Which airport do I land at in Chiang Mai, and how do I reach the city?

You land at Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), which sits just 3 to 4 km from the old city. The ride into town takes about 15 minutes by airport taxi, Grab or a shared songthaew, so you can be at a hotel near Tha Phae Gate within half an hour of clearing arrivals.
