From November to April, yes, the sea is usually calm and safe. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings strong waves and dangerous rip currents that cause drownings every year. November to April is the best window, with calm, clear seas and reliable beach weather. It is peak season, so it is also the busiest and most expensive. May to October is cheaper and greener but wetter, with rougher water and swimming often unsafe. February and March hit the sweet spot of good weather just past the peak crowds.

Nightlife is Patong's headline act. Bangla Road, one block back from the sand, closes to traffic each evening and fills with bars, clubs, live music and cabaret. Simon Cabaret runs its famous show nightly a short ride south, and the Bangla boxing stadiums stage live Muay Thai. Agree bar prices before you order and keep an eye on your tab.

Choose by how much night you want. Budget hostels and guesthouses cluster around the Bangla Road grid where the action is loudest. Mid-range 3 to 4 star hotels sit near Beach Road and Jungceylon mall. For quiet, book a beachfront or headland resort at the north (Kalim) or south end, a few minutes from the strip but away from the noise.

Karon Beach is about 8 km south of Patong and takes around 15 minutes by bus, taxi or song thaew over the hill. Kata is just beyond Karon. Both are quieter, more family-friendly beaches, and they make an easy half-day escape from Patong's crowds.
