Patong Beach In Phuket

Patong Beach in Phuket, Thailand

Experience The Ecstatic View Of The Patong Beach, Thailand

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6535 reviews )

Patong Beach is the loud, bright heart of Phuket: a free public beach, open around the clock, running about 3 km down the island's west coast along the Andaman Sea. By day it is a wide sweep of sand with parasails overhead and jet skis buzzing the shallows. After dark the action moves one street back to Bangla Road. This guide covers the honest stuff you need before you go: how to reach Patong from the airport, the best months, whether it is safe to swim, what to actually do, and where to stay. When you are ready to turn it into a trip, we point you down to the Phuket packages our desk runs.

About Patong Beach

Patong is Phuket's most developed resort beach, and it does not pretend otherwise. The crescent-shaped bay facing the Andaman Sea is the draw by day, wide enough for sun-loungers, parasailing and a long walk at low tide. The bigger pull for most visitors is the nightlife, which spills off the sand and onto the streets behind it: beer bars, night clubs, go-go bars, cabarets and massage parlours packed into a few blocks. Peak season lands right after the monsoon, so a beach day in November through April catches Patong at its calmest and clearest.

It is also one of the best shopping strips in Phuket. You get full malls, smaller centres and night markets within a few minutes of the sand, so a rained-off afternoon is easily filled. And for a beach this busy, the water still delivers: the reefs and marine life off Patong make it a genuine scuba and snorkelling base, backed by a full watersports line-up of sea kayaking, surfing, kite surfing, wakeboarding and jet skiing. Patong is not the beach you come to for quiet. It is the one you come to when you want everything in one place.

Things to Do in Patong Beach

Patong packs more into a small area than anywhere else in Phuket. Here is what earns your time, from the water to the small hours.

Bangla Road nightlife

The reason many people come to Patong is Bangla Road, the pedestrianised strip a block back from the sand. It closes to traffic in the evening and fills with open-front bars, clubs, live bands and cabaret touts. Simon Cabaret, Phuket's best-known ladyboy show, runs nightly a short ride south of the strip. Go for the spectacle, keep an eye on your bar tab, and agree prices before you order.

Watersports on the beach

The sand is lined with operators from morning. Parasailing is the signature Patong ride, the parachutes are visible the length of the bay. You can also take a jet ski, banana boat, kayak or go wakeboarding, surfing and kite surfing depending on the season. Two cautions worth taking seriously: agree the price and the time before you get on anything, and inspect a jet ski with the operator before and after your ride, as inflated damage claims are a known scam here.

Muay Thai, shopping and beach clubs

Muay Thai. The Bangla boxing stadiums put on live Thai boxing several nights a week, from tourist-friendly cards to serious bouts.

Shopping. Jungceylon is the big mall at the end of Bangla Road; Banzaan Fresh Market next door is the go-to for fruit and street food, and night markets fill in the gaps.

Beach clubs. Day beds, pools and DJs run along the northern end and the Kalim headland if you want the beach without the hawkers.

Scuba and snorkelling. Dive shops run trips to the reefs off Patong and out to the Phi Phi group; beginners can do a first dive and be back by afternoon.

For a deeper list, see our guides to things to do in Patong, Patong nightlife and where to eat in Patong.

Nearby Beaches to Escape the Crowds

Patong is brilliant for a night out and hard work for a quiet swim. The good news is that calmer sand is minutes away.

Freedom Beach. A hidden cove just south, reachable by long-tail boat or a steep path. Clear water, far fewer people, no roaring jet skis.

Tri Trang Beach. A short ride south of Patong, sheltered and good for snorkelling when the sea is calm.

Kalim Beach. Right on Patong's northern edge; rockier and quieter, with beach clubs on the headland.

Paradise Beach. A managed cove south of Patong with loungers and a day-club scene.

See Paradise Beach and Karon Beach for the full write-ups, or browse all places to visit in Phuket. Patong is also the usual launch point for a Phi Phi and Maya Bay day trip by speedboat.

How to Reach Patong Beach

Patong sits on Phuket's west coast, about 40 km and 50 to 60 minutes from Phuket International Airport (HKT), which is up in the island's north. There is no train and no direct airport metro, so it is road all the way. Traffic on the airport road thickens between about 4 and 7 pm, so allow extra time on an evening arrival.

From HKT airport Time Cost (THB) Cost (Rs)
Metered airport taxi / private car 50 to 60 min 600 to 800 1,720 to 2,300
Grab (app ride-hail) 50 to 60 min 800 to 1,150 2,300 to 3,300
Airport Smart Bus (to Patong) About 90 min 100 to 170 290 to 490

From elsewhere in Phuket

From Phuket Town. About 15 km, 30 to 40 min. Local song thaew (shared pickup trucks) run in the day; taxis and Grab any time.

From Karon or Kata. The next beaches south, 20 to 30 min by taxi, tuk-tuk or song thaew over the hill.

Getting around Patong. It is walkable end to end. Metered taxis are rare, so use Grab, agree tuk-tuk fares up front, or rent a scooter only if you are a confident rider.

Rupee figures use the August 2026 rate of about Rs 2.87 to the baht and are a guide only.

Best Time to Visit and Swimming Safety

The clear winner is November to April, when the northeast season keeps the Andaman calm, the water clear and the beach genuinely swimmable. This is peak season, so it is also the busiest and priciest. From May to October the southwest monsoon takes over: rooms are cheaper and the island is green, but the sea turns rough and the beach can be closed to swimmers on the worst days.

Period Sea and weather Verdict for Patong
Nov to Feb Calm, clear, dry, peak season Best conditions, busiest and priciest
Mar to Apr Warm, still mostly calm Great beach days, hot by midday
May to Jul SW monsoon building, rougher seas Cheaper; swim only when flags allow
Aug to Oct Wettest, strong swell and rip currents Beach still open; swimming often unsafe

Swimming safety (read this)

Patong's rip currents are a genuine danger in the monsoon and they cause drownings every year. During May to October, watch the flags: red flags mean do not enter the water, and they are there for a reason even when the surface looks tempting. Swim between the flags where lifeguards patrol, keep small children close, and skip the swim entirely on a strong-swell day. If you are caught in a current, do not fight it: stay afloat, signal, and let it carry you out before swimming parallel to the shore back in.

Where to Stay in Patong

Patong has the densest spread of rooms in Phuket, from party hostels to beachfront resorts. Roughly, the closer you are to Bangla Road the louder the night, and the northern headland is where you go for quiet.

Tier Where and what Rough price / night
Budget Hostels and guesthouses in the Bangla Road grid Rs 900 to 2,500
Mid-range 3 to 4 star hotels near Beach Road and Jungceylon Rs 3,000 to 7,000
Resort Beachfront and headland resorts (Kalim / south end) Rs 8,000 and up

Prices are indicative low-to-high-season guides in rupees; confirm live rates for your dates. If you want quiet nights and easy access to the strip, the north end near Kalim is the sweet spot.

Verified by our Phuket desk

“For a first Phuket trip we base most travellers in Patong for two nights for the nightlife and watersports, then move them to Karon or Kata for the quiet half,” says our TravelTriangle Phuket desk lead. The access, seasons and safety notes on this page are checked by our Thailand team against Phuket tourism sources and live operator rates.

Patong rewards a plan: come in the November to April window, respect the flags in the water, agree prices before you ride or drink, and use the quieter beaches nearby when you need a break. When you are ready to build it into a trip, browse our Phuket tour packages (from about Rs 12,000 per person), or take the islands in one go with a Phuket and Phi Phi tour. Stays, transfers and day trips are handled, so you just show up.

His commitment was commendable. We took 4 night 5 days package. The hotels we stayed were fortunately good. Cab serv

Like we had a bangkok city tour in our package but reclining budha/watarun temple was not part of it. Better to have it included in basic packages which would improve customer satisfaction. But overall it was a good and hustle free experience.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Get your answers — before you plan your trip.

    Phuket Travel FAQs

Is there an entry fee for Patong Beach?

No. Patong is a free public beach and it is open 24 hours, so there is no ticket and no closing time for the sand itself. You only pay for what you use, such as a sun-lounger, a jet ski or a parasail ride. Agree those prices with the operator before you start.

Where is Patong Beach and how do I get there from the airport?

Patong is on the west coast of Phuket, on the Andaman Sea, about 15 km from Phuket Town. From Phuket International Airport (HKT) in the north it is roughly 40 km and 50 to 60 minutes by road. A metered taxi or private car runs about 600 to 800 THB, Grab is a little more, and the Airport Smart Bus is the budget option at about 100 to 170 THB.

Is Patong Beach safe for swimming?

From November to April, yes, the sea is usually calm and safe. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings strong waves and dangerous rip currents that cause drownings every year. Watch the flags: a red flag means do not enter the water. Swim between the flags where lifeguards patrol, and skip the swim on a strong-swell day.

What is the best time to visit Patong Beach?

November to April is the best window, with calm, clear seas and reliable beach weather. It is peak season, so it is also the busiest and most expensive. May to October is cheaper and greener but wetter, with rougher water and swimming often unsafe. February and March hit the sweet spot of good weather just past the peak crowds.

What is there to do in Patong Beach at night?

Nightlife is Patong's headline act. Bangla Road, one block back from the sand, closes to traffic each evening and fills with bars, clubs, live music and cabaret. Simon Cabaret runs its famous show nightly a short ride south, and the Bangla boxing stadiums stage live Muay Thai. Agree bar prices before you order and keep an eye on your tab.

Where should I stay in Patong Beach?

Choose by how much night you want. Budget hostels and guesthouses cluster around the Bangla Road grid where the action is loudest. Mid-range 3 to 4 star hotels sit near Beach Road and Jungceylon mall. For quiet, book a beachfront or headland resort at the north (Kalim) or south end, a few minutes from the strip but away from the noise.

How far is Patong from Karon Beach?

Karon Beach is about 8 km south of Patong and takes around 15 minutes by bus, taxi or song thaew over the hill. Kata is just beyond Karon. Both are quieter, more family-friendly beaches, and they make an easy half-day escape from Patong's crowds.

Can I take a day trip to Phi Phi or Maya Bay from Patong?

Yes. Patong is a common pick-up point for speedboat day tours to the Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay, usually 45 to 60 minutes each way. Most tours include hotel transfers, so you can be picked up in Patong in the morning and back for the evening. Note that Maya Bay closes annually from August to September for reef recovery.

Is smoking allowed on Patong Beach?

No. Smoking on the open sand is banned across Phuket's beaches, including Patong, and fines apply. There are designated smoking zones set back from the beach. Also take your litter with you, as beach cleanliness is actively enforced.

What currency is used in Patong, and are cards accepted?

The local currency is the Thai baht (THB). Hotels, malls and larger restaurants take cards, but bars, markets, taxis and beach operators are cash-first, so carry baht. ATMs are everywhere along Bangla and Beach Road. Foreign cash is best changed at a licensed money-changer rather than spent directly.
