How to Reach Manali From Bangalore

Manali has no airport and no railway station of its own, and there is no direct Bangalore to Manali flight or train. Every route from Bangalore is a flight or train to a northern gateway, then a mountain drive of a few hours. Here is how the three options actually work.

By air (the route almost everyone uses)

The quick way is a nonstop from Bangalore (BLR) to Delhi (DEL), about 2 hours 45 minutes, then Manali by road. From Delhi you either take an overnight Volvo bus, roughly 12 to 14 hours over about 530 km, or a private cab. An evening flight plus the overnight bus is the sweet spot: you sleep on the bus and reach Manali the next morning. The alternative is flying Bangalore to Chandigarh (IXC), about 2 hours 40 minutes nonstop, then a shorter 8 to 10 hour drive of roughly 310 km up through Bilaspur and Mandi. The nearest airport to Manali itself is Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali, KUU), about 50 km and 1.5 to 2 hours away, but flights there are limited and usually connect through Delhi, so most Bangalore travellers stick with the Delhi or Chandigarh route.

By train

There is no direct train to Manali because the nearest broad-gauge railheads are Chandigarh (about 310 km away), Ambala and Pathankot. From Bangalore that means a long train to Delhi or Chandigarh, then the same road leg as above. It is cheaper than flying but adds two full days to the journey, so most people fly the long leg and save the time for the mountains.

By road

Driving the whole way from Bangalore is about 2,600 km and takes two to three days each way, which is why almost nobody does it as a holiday. The road leg that matters is the last one, into the hills, and your package handles it by Volvo coach or private cab from Delhi or Chandigarh.

Best Time to Visit Manali From Bangalore

December to February is when this route earns its reputation. Solang and the Atal Tunnel side hold snow, honeymooners and families fly up for it, and demand from Bangalore peaks. Pack for real cold and book early, because winter flights to Delhi fill up. March to June is the other sweet spot: days are pleasant, the passes open, and this is the season for paragliding, rafting and trekking. July to mid-September is the monsoon, when landslides and road closures are common on the mountain leg, so most Bangalore travellers avoid it. If you are chasing snow in early summer, the higher reaches around Rohtang and the Atal Tunnel usually hold it into May.

How Many Days Do You Need From Bangalore?

Because Bangalore has no direct connection, budget a full day of travel each way and plan around that. Three to four days on the ground covers Manali itself: Solang, Hidimba temple, Old Manali and a day trip to Rohtang or the Atal Tunnel. Five to six days lets you add Shimla and Kullu on the way up without rushing. Eight or nine days is what a Spiti Valley extension needs. • Hidimba Devi Temple. A 16th-century cedar-wood pagoda temple set in a deodar grove near town. Its unusual tiered roof is the reason it is on almost every Manali route.

• Jogni Waterfalls. A short uphill walk above Vashisht, past the hot springs, to a falls with a valley view. An easy half-day for travellers who want a stretch of the legs without a full trek.

• Manu Temple and Old Manali. The Manu Temple sits in Old Manali, the laid-back cafe and guesthouse quarter across the river from Mall Road. Both are best explored slowly, on foot.
