How to Reach Himachal Pradesh
By Air: The major airports are in Kullu (Bhuntar), Dharamshala (Gaggal), and Shimla (Jubbarhatti). Flights are limited but connect to major Indian cities.
By Train: Himachal doesn’t have a widespread railway network. However, the Kalka-Shimla Toy Train is popular ride. The nearest broad-gauge stations are Kalka, Pathankot, and Chandigarh.
By Road: The most common and scenic way to reach Himachal. Volvo buses and private cabs run frequently from Delhi, Chandigarh, and nearby cities. Roads are well-maintained in most regions.
Getting Around in Himachal Pradesh
By Bus: HRTC (Himachal Road Transport Corporation) buses connect major towns and remote villages throughout the state. Comfortable and economical, but sometimes delayed in harsh weather.
By Taxi: Ideal for flexibility and sightseeing. Taxis can be pre-booked or hired locally—negotiate rates beforehand.
By Bike/Scooter: Renting a two-wheeler (especially in Manali or Bir) is popular among adventure lovers and offers freedom to explore at your own pace.
Places to Visit in Himachal Pradesh
Shimla: The charming capital, with colonial architecture, bustling Mall Road, and scenic viewpoints like Jakhu Temple and Kufri.
Manali: A favourite for honeymooners and thrill-seekers. Offers snow activities in Solang Valley and treks to Hampta Pass or Bhrigu Lake.
Dharamshala & McLeod Ganj: The residence of the Dalai Lama. Rich in Tibetan culture, monasteries, cafes, and serene hikes like Triund.
Spiti Valley: A high-altitude cold desert with stark landscapes, ancient monasteries, and villages like Kaza, Tabo, and Key. Best visited in summer.
Kasol & Parvati Valley: A backpacker’s haven. Known for scenic treks, hot springs in Manikaran, and riverside cafes.
Bir Billing: India’s paragliding capital. Also great for meditation retreats and peaceful walks in tea gardens.
Kinnaur: Famous for its apple orchards, Sangla Valley, and the dramatic Kalpa village with views of Kinner Kailash.
Essential Information for Tourists
Permits: Foreign nationals require permits for Spiti and Kinnaur, located near the Indo-Tibet border, which can be arranged in Shimla or Reckong Peo.
Currency: Indian Rupee (INR). Carry cash in remote areas, as ATMs and card payments are limited.
Language: Hindi is widely spoken. English is understood in towns and tourist areas. Learning a few local phrases is always appreciated.
Weather: Always check forecasts. The weather in the mountains can change rapidly. Winters need heavy woollens; summers are mild.
Health: Carry basic medication for altitude sickness and motion sickness, especially when visiting higher regions like Spiti or Rohtang.
Connectivity: Mobile network can be patchy, especially in remote regions. BSNL and Jio work best in such areas.
Safety: Himachal is generally very safe for tourists, including solo travellers. Still, be cautious during treks and always inform someone about your plans.

How To Reach Himachal Pradesh
Read about the best & quickest routes to save time & money, as suggested by our travelers
By Air
There are three domestic airports that connect Himachal Pradesh to the rest of the country. These are located at Kullu-Manali, Dharamshala and Shimla. The airports have flights from Himachal Pradesh to Delhi and Chandigarh. You can conveniently travel via air and get down at the airport closest to the cities you wish to visit.
By Train
The kind of rocky terrain that Himachal Pradesh is located on, makes it slightly inconvenient to construct railway tracks. However, with best efforts, a train does run into the state from Pathankot in Punjab. Travelers can drive up to Punjab or take a flight and then take a train to Himachal Pradesh. By train, it takes only about seven and a half hours long. People usually take overnight trains to Himachal so that they reach feeling refreshed. The important railway stations in Himachal are Solan and Una. There is also a toy train available that connects Himachal to Kalka. Opting for a train proves to be great option as they are usually affordable, comfortable, well maintained and a lot more fun than a flight journey.
By Road
The advantage of states situated in the hills is that you can plan a comfortable road trip. The distance from Delhi to Himachal Pradesh by road can be covered in just about 7 hours or maximum 7 and a half hours. The roads are very well maintained and even during the monsoon season, it is safe to drive up to the state, just needs a little caution. Himachal Pradesh is very well connected to the major cities. To reach Himachal by road, you can hire cabs or even take a bus. A bus journey is usually affordable and comfortable too, as the buses stop from time to time and allow people to try out the hill roadside chai and some local delicacies.
