Places To See
The Meenakshi Amman Temple MuseumLocated within the temple complex, the museum is famous for its 1000 pillars hall. The temple itself dates to more than 1200 years. There are several icons, paintings and photographs on display, which provide an insight into the Dravidan culture.
Tip: A full tour of the museum will take you around two hours.
Cheruthoni DamConstructed across the Cheruthoni River the dam generates electricity for the surrounding areas. The place enjoys a scenic location and is popular with the photographers.
The Kalvari MountThis famed tourist spot has a very steep slope. A procession is held here during during Good Friday and Lent. From the mount, you can enjoy commanding views of the surroundings, from the Idukki Arch Dam to Ayyappancovil.
Tip: There are several hiking and trekking trails in this area. If you are trekking, you might even see elephants on the way.
The Idukki Arch DamThe dam is the first arch dam in Asia and the second of its kind in the world. Set between the Kuravanmala and Kurathimala hills on the Periyar River, the Arch Dam is a hydro-electric power station with an underground power generator. The dam is also famous for its scenic surroundings.
Tip: If you visit the dam from August to March, you will be able to witness the water gushing out in full force.
Things To Do
The Hill View ParkSpread across 8 acres, this beautifully landscaped park houses a natural lake. As the name suggests, you can take in the mesmerizing views of the surrounding hills. Besides, you can also see deer, bisons and wild elephants in their natural habitats. The park also has a herbal garden and a children’s playground.
Tip: You can plan a day tour and also visit the nearby Idukki Arch Dam and Cheruthony Dam. Remember to carry your binoculars to view the birds.
Kurinjimala SanctuaryThe sanctuary houses a diverse range of flora and fauna. It also preserves the endangered Neelakurinji plant and the unique biodiversity of this region. The sanctuary is a home to animals like elephants, deer Nilgiri Tahr, Gaur and Strobilanthes Kunthiana. The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary also lie in close proximity to the Kurinjimala Sanctuary.
RamakkalmeduThis is a famed hill station in the scenic Western Ghats. Apart from rejuvenating in the refreshing surroundings, you can also see attractions such as the Statue of Kurathi and the Monument of Kuravar. Legend has it that Lord Rama came here when he was searching for his wife, Sita.
Thattekkad Bird SanctuaryAlso known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, this sanctuary is a must visit for the those who enjoy bird watching. It is also home to several indigenous reptiles and animals. You can view several birds such as great Indian hornbill, crested serpent eagle, rose-billed roller, Malabar grey hornbill, and crimson throated barber.
Tip: The sanctuary is open from 8 am to 6 pm. Driving is not allowed within the premises. Expert guides are available to help you spot the birds and animals.
Thommankuthu FallsThis small but captivating waterfall is named after Thomman, a tribal leader. It is said that he was swept off his feet when he was trying to cross the river. The waterfall is also known as the 7 steps waterfall because when the water cascades down, it forms seven steps, with a pool at each step.
Tip: There are a host of adventure activities you can try in this area including rock climbing, hiking and trekking. Besides, you can also opt for boating, fishing and horse riding.
KulamavuThis is a popular hill station that attracts people who wish to get away from it all and relax in the lap of nature. You can see the Kulamavu reservoir nestling between the rocky hills. There are several trekking, hiking and biking trails that you can explore. Besides, you can also enjoy boat rides between the Kulamavu dam and Cheruthoni.
