About Jigme Dorji National Park in Thimphu
Jigme Dorji National Park is the second largest protected forest area of Bhutan, and also one of the most favoured tourist destinations. The forest is named after the Late Dragon King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the monarch of Bhutan from March 30, 1952 – July 21, 1972. He was the first king to open up the country to the outside world in around the 1960s and took the first steps towards making it a democracy. Jigme Dorji National Park stretches for around 4350 sq. km. over the entirety of Gasa district and northern parts of Paro, Punakha, Wangdue Phodrang and the capital Thimphu. The Jigme Dorji National Park is a true representative of the country’s diverse nature, as it is home to all four national entities of Bhutan from the natural world – animal (takin), flower (blue poppy), bird (raven) and tree (cypress).
This dynamic nature is the most exciting feature of Jigme Dorji National Park of Bhutan. It is probably one of the very few forests where the Bengal Tiger and the Himalayan snow leopard co-exist. Other faunas include Himalayan black bear, blue sheep, black musk deer, red panda, Indian leopard, barking deer, sambar and over 300 avian species. Takin, the national animal of Bhutan and a very rare creature outside the country, can also be seen on Jigme Dorji National Park safari, grazing in the open forests.
The forest enjoys a topography as diverse as its biodiversity. The northernmost parts of the forest have peaks rising for 7000 metres, with the likes of Jhomolhari, Tsherimgang and Jitchu Drake. Within these mountain peaks lie some of Bhutan’s most fascinating trek routes. Jigme Dorji National Park trekking for the view of Jomolhari Peak is probably the most popular one in Bhutan. There are many other trekking trails, some of which lead to the breathtakingly beautiful panoramic views of the glacial lakes – Thorthormi, Luggye and Teri Kang.
