The season you pick changes both the experience and the price. Here is how the year breaks down for a budget traveller.

Summer (April to June): peak season, peak prices

This is when Himachal is busiest and warmest, roughly 5 to 24 degrees Celsius in the hills, and the only time Rohtang and the high passes are reliably open. It is the best window for trekking, rafting and high-altitude drives, but rooms and cabs cost the most, so book early and travel on weekdays to save.

Monsoon (July to September): the cheapest window

Rates fall to their lowest of the year, often 30 to 40 percent below summer, and the valleys turn deep green. Temperatures sit around 14 to 21 degrees Celsius. The trade-off is rain and the odd landslide delay, so keep the itinerary flexible and lean towards Shimla, Manali and the lower valleys rather than high mountain roads.

Winter (November to March): cheap snow, if you time it

Outside the Christmas and New Year spike, winter is genuinely cheap and it is when you get snow in Manali, Shimla and Kufri. Temperatures drop to around 0 degrees Celsius. February and early March are the value sweet spot: low rates, thin crowds and a good chance of fresh snow.

1. Manali

The default first Himachal trip, and still one of the cheapest to reach by overnight Volvo from Delhi. Budget rooms cluster in Old Manali and Vashisht, where you also get free hot springs. Solang Valley, Hadimba Temple and the Old Manali cafes fill an easy, low-cost few days.

2. Shimla

Easy on the wallet if you use the toy train from Kalka and stay a little off the Mall Road. Jakhu Temple, the Ridge and the Viceregal Lodge are cheap or free to see, and the whole town is walkable so you spend little on local transport.

3. Kullu

Often skipped in favour of Manali, which keeps it cheaper. The Great Himalayan National Park, Bijli Mahadev Temple and Pandoh Dam are the draws, and Kullu is the place to buy shawls straight from the weavers.

4. Dalhousie

A quiet colonial hill town where stays run noticeably cheaper than Shimla or Manali. Satdhara Falls, Panchpula and the Kalatop sanctuary are low-cost, and nearby Khajjiar makes a free day out. March to June is the best time to go.

5. McLeodganj

Backpacker-friendly and one of the best value bases in the state. Dorms and guesthouses are cheap, the Triund trek is free apart from your effort, and Bhagsu Falls, Namgyal Monastery and the Dalai Lama temple complex cost little to nothing.

6. Kasol

The Parvati Valley classic, built for budget travel with riverside cafes, cheap guesthouses and free walks to Chalal. Use it as a base for the Kheerganga trek or day trips to Tosh and Manikaran, where the gurudwara offers free meals and stay.

7. Bir Billing

India's paragliding capital, and cheaper to stay in than most Himachal towns. Even if you do not fly, the Tibetan monasteries, the tea factory and the quiet camping are low-cost. April to June is the best flying season.

8. Tirthan Valley

An offbeat, low-cost escape near the Great Himalayan National Park where homestays are the norm and cheaper than hotels. Trout fishing, easy treks and river crossings fill the days without much spend.

9. Chamba

One of the least commercial towns in Himachal, so prices stay low year round. Chamera Lake, the Lakshmi Narayan temple complex and the local Chamba rumaal embroidery are the highlights. It works as an offbeat add-on to Dalhousie.

10. Tosh

The last village up the Parvati Valley, reached by a short walk and full of cheap guesthouses with valley views. It is a slow, low-budget base for the Kheerganga trek and for simply doing nothing with a mountain view.
