About Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa

The Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa is one of the most famous attractions of this little paradisiacal state of India. The Bom Jesus basilica church in Goa, also known as the Borea Jezuchi Bajilika, is visited by hundreds of locals and tourists all through the year.

History of Old Goa Church

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is more than 400 years old. The foundation  of the oldest church in Goa was laid in the year 1594, while its construction completed in 1605. It is home to the tomb as well as the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier. The Basilica of Bom Jesus body remains are taken out once every decade, calling for a huge festival all across Goa, attracting pilgrims from all over the world. The oldest church was served with the status of a minor basilica in the year 1946, and is now revered as a holy site.

Basilica of Bom Jesus Architecture

The Jesuit church is built in Baroque architectural style. Its white-washed exterior is considered to be the finest example of Baroque architecture in India.

The church is located in Old Goa, and there are freelance guides available right outside the church to explain the significance of everything outside and inside the monument. However, there isn’t really any requirement for a guide actually, since there are plaques inside and outside explaining everything.

Attractions of Basilica of Bom Jesus

Executed in between the years of 1973 and 1976, this gallery is the largest of its kind in Asia. The most popular paintings exhibited in this gallery are: ‘Genesis’ and ‘The Last Judgement’.  Tomb of St. Francis Xavier is another attraction that lets people dig into the history of the region. This tomb was structured post the remains of Xavier Francis were found fresh and intact, and he was declared a saint. Besides that, the Professed House made of laterite rock is another attraction to visit. Constructed in between 1585 to 1589, this two-storied building became the mission centre for all missions of Jesuit.

Facts about Basilica of Bom Jesus

Various ceremonies take place during the church especially during the Christmas eve, so make sure to take out some time on Christmas night to visit the church if you happen to be in Goa during December.

    • Trip to Goa

Hotel was a bit small but good.. There were only two ppl taking care of everything.. So the service was slow.. Food was good but limited menu.. Rooms were well maintained.. The initial room shown to us was pretty small but on our request they gave us a bigger room.. View was very good.. The cab drivers were ok.. But there was nobody at the airport with a placard of my name.. As mentioned in the itinerary.. We had to call the main travel person and wait for about 30 mins before the cab came.. The North Goa and South Goa tours were good but the drivers took us to some exorbitantly priced restaurants.. Other than these.. Our trip was good and enjoyable.. Goa beaches are spectacular.. We mainly had at blast at Baga beach and Vagator beach.. We also hired a scooty..and roamed around on our own.. This was the best part...

I had a very good trip to Goa and all arrangements through travel triangle was very smooth. There was some confusion on hotel confirmation when I landed but the agent (Komal) helped very much to resolve it over phone and remained in touch through out vacation to take care. White Wood resort was an excellent recommendation and the cab driver arranged was very friendly and professional.
