If asked how to go to Santorini from India, then the best way to get there is mostly a two-fold journey. The first part comprises flying to Athens, and then the second part is flying to Santorini or take a ferry to the island. It may not be a trouble for those who already have plans of touring mainland Greece before coming to Santorini. However, for others it is a long-drawn journey, but this is the only way to reach the destination.

Santorini, an important part of Greek tourism, is nestled at around 300 kms off the coast in the Aegean Sea of Mediterranean. However, that has not been a hindrance when it comes to figuring out how to reach Santorini. For, there are enough flights from the Greek capital Athens operating throughout the year, and other European cities including Rome, Amsterdam, Paris, Munich, Brussels and more during the peak season. Some of the popular airlines with flights to Santorini other than Aegean Airlines are Lufthansa, Swiss Air, Finnair, Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways. Hence, one can choose to hop on a flight to cover the India to Santorini distance of around 5438 kms in approximately 10 hours and 30 minutes, and have a remarkable travel experience here.

The island of Santorini is served by a limited capacity international airport, named after the island itself. The Santorini airport is located some 6 km southeast of Fira, only 10 minutes away. There is a shuttle bus every hour to take tourists from the airport to the main city.

By Air

If you draw a straight line on the map, Santorini location is 5438 km away from India. But airlines from India do not follow this route. There are no direct flights to Santorini from India. In fact, there are no direct flights to Athens either. However, the Santorini National Airport located in Kamani village, which is well-connected to Athens and other places in Europe, provides regular flight services. Flights from Delhi or Mumbai take at least 10 hours 30 minutes to reach Athens and that too via some other city in Europe. Turkish Airlines, Gulf Air, Etihad and Qatar have the best flights to Athens. From the Greek capital, you can get cheap flights to Santorini operated by Aegean Airlines and Olympic Airways. In good weather conditions, the flights take around 45 minutes to reach. The peak season has more than 10 flights to Santorini every day. In July and August, one can fly in from Thessaloniki as well.

By Sea

Piraeus port in Athens has regular ferries to Athinios port of Santorini everyday. This is a much easier option than air travel, and the fare of ferries is also less than air tickets to Santorini. There are at least 4 ferries between Athens and Santorini in the summer months. Fares are between 20-70 Euros. The two best options are Blue Star and Hellenic Seaways. Blue Star leaves at 7:25am every day of the year and takes 8 hours to reach Santorini via some other islands like Paros and Naxos. It is more luxurious, and during the peak season have night ferries on three nights of the week. Hellenic Seaways have a daily ferry leaving at 7am just like Blue Star. This one is much faster and takes only 5 hours, but the ride can be really bumpy. Many Mediterranean cruises go via Santorini as well.

Local Transfers:- Please have the option to include local transfers- hotel to ferry and vice versa etc. This costed us a lot and a bit of hassle. 3. Delos Tour:- Inclusions say that it includes transfers/entry tickets however we were asked to pay 12Euro each for the entry. This could have been included in the overall cost to avoid confusion. Hotels at Myconos and Santorini were too good for the location.
