How To Reach Dharamshala From Bangalore

The nearest railway station is Kangra (code KGRA), about 20 km away on the narrow-gauge Kangra Valley line. It is the closest but slow. For a real train connection, Pathankot Junction (PTK) about 85 km away is the main broad-gauge railhead, with the most trains from Delhi and quick cabs or buses onward to McLeodganj in 3 to 4 hours.

There is no airport in the town itself. The nearest is Gaggal Airport, also called Kangra Airport (code DHM), about 13 km away and a 30-minute cab ride. IndiGo and SpiceJet fly direct from Delhi in roughly 1 hour 40 minutes. If Gaggal is closed by weather, Chandigarh (IXC, ~250 km) and Delhi (IGI) are the fallback airports.

Fastest is the direct Delhi to Gaggal flight (about 1h40m) plus a 30-minute cab. Cheapest is the overnight Delhi Volvo from Kashmere Gate ISBT at Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500, taking 10 to 11 hours. No broad-gauge train runs into Dharamshala itself. The only rail line into the valley is the heritage narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway, which climbs 94 km from Pathankot through Kangra and Palampur. Get off at Kangra (about 20 km out) and cab the rest. It is a scenic toy train, so use it for the experience and rely on Pathankot for a fast, frequent connection.

Pathankot is about 85 km from Dharamshala, roughly a 2.5 to 3 hour drive. From Pathankot Junction take a prepaid taxi straight to McLeodganj, or catch a bus from the Pathankot Bus Stand, which takes 3 to 4 hours. Chakki Bank station, also in the Pathankot area, works the same way.

You can reach Dharamshala by air, rail or road. Fly to Gaggal/Kangra Airport (13 km) from Delhi, take a train to Pathankot Junction (85 km) and drive across, or ride an overnight Volvo bus from Delhi in 10 to 11 hours. Most travellers fly if short on time and take the bus or train to save money.
