The nearest railway station to Dharamshala is Kangra (station code KGRA), about 20 km away on the scenic narrow-gauge Kangra Valley line. It is the closest station, but it runs a slow toy train. The station most travellers actually use is Pathankot Junction (PTK), about 85 km away. Pathankot is a broad-gauge railhead with far more trains from Delhi and other cities, plus quick cabs and buses onward to McLeodganj. In short: Kangra is closest, Pathankot is the practical choice.

How to reach Dharamshala by train
For speed and choice, book to Pathankot Junction. Overnight trains from Delhi reach Pathankot in roughly 9 to 11 hours, and from there a cab covers the 85 km to McLeodganj in about 3 hours, or a Pathankot Bus Stand service in 3 to 4 hours. If you are coming from farther south, Chandigarh is the other common railhead, with a 5 to 6 hour road leg onward. Want the view instead of the speed? Ride the Kangra Valley Railway, a heritage narrow-gauge line that winds 94 km from Pathankot through Kangra, Palampur and Baijnath up to Joginder Nagar. Get off at Kangra station (about 20 km from Dharamshala) and take a taxi for the last stretch. It is slow and there is no direct broad-gauge train into the valley, so treat the toy train as an experience, not your fastest way in.

The nearest airport is Gaggal Airport, also called Kangra Airport (code DHM), about 13 km from Dharamshala, a 30-minute cab ride. IndiGo and SpiceJet fly direct from Delhi, with the flight itself taking around 1 hour 40 minutes. It is a small hill airport, so schedules thin out in bad weather and fares swing with the season. If Gaggal is full or fogged in, the usual fallbacks are Chandigarh airport (IXC, about 250 km) or Delhi (IGI). There is no airport in Dharamshala. However, the nearest airport to Dharamshala is the Gaggal Airport also known as the Kangra Airport, which is located at a distance of 15 km from Dharamshala. Daily flights connect the airport to several cities in India including the capital. You can book a cab or a taxi to go to Dharamshala from the airport which is a mere half an hour's journey to reach Dharamshala. Tourists coming from other countries can take a flight to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. From there, you can either opt for a bus, or cab or take another flight from IGI Airport to Gaggal Airport and reach Dharamshala similarly as above.
By Train
There is no Railway Station in Dharamshala. But the nearest Railway Station to Dharamshala is Pathankot railway station in Punjab, which is about 86 km from Dharamshala. You can take a cab from the station to reach Dharamshala or a bus from the Pathankot Bus Stand towards McLeodganj which usually takes about 3 to 4 hours to reach.
