How To Reach Dharamshala From Mumbai

Rated 4.20/5 ( based on 10840 reviews )

Mumbai to Dharamshala at a Glance: Compare Every Route

By AirBy RoadBy TrainBy Sea
Mumbai to Dharamshala-31.0 hours--

Dharamshala, the hillside town also known as Little Lhasa and the home of the Dalai Lama, sits about 1,850 km north of Mumbai in the Kangra valley of Himachal Pradesh. The honest starting point for how to reach Dharamshala from Mumbai is this: there is no nonstop flight and no direct train, so every route runs through Delhi or Punjab. The fastest way is to fly, connecting in Delhi and landing at Gaggal airport just 15 km from town. The cheapest is a Mumbai train to Pathankot and a bus onward. In between sit the overnight Delhi-to-Dharamshala Volvo and the long two-day drive. This guide breaks down each mode with real fares, timings and stations, tells you which one is actually worth it, and clears up where in Dharamsala you should aim to arrive.

Pick your mode before you read the detail. Dharamshala is a landlocked Himalayan town, so there is no sea route; the real choice is flight, train, bus or road, and none of them is a single straight line from Mumbai. Here is the whole journey compared.

Mode Route Total time Approx one-way cost Best for
By Air Mumbai to Delhi to Gaggal (Kangra), then 15 km cab About 7 to 9 hours Rs 8,000 to Rs 22,000 Fastest; short on time
By Train + road Mumbai to Pathankot by rail, then 85 km cab or bus About 28 to 32 hours Rs 800 to Rs 3,500 rail, plus onward Budget travellers; no direct train
By Bus (via Delhi) Mumbai to Delhi, then overnight Volvo to Dharamshala About 34 to 40 hours Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000 combined Cheapest end to end; no flying
By Road (car or cab) NH48 via Ahmedabad, Delhi and Chandigarh, ~1,850 km About 30 to 35 hours driving Fuel, or cab from ~Rs 25,000 Groups; a road-trip holiday

In one line: fly if your time is worth more than your money, take the train to Pathankot if it is the other way round, and drive only if the journey itself is the holiday. The sections below go deeper on each, starting with the fastest.

How To Reach Dharamshala From Mumbai By Air

Flying is the fastest way to reach Dharamshala from Mumbai, and the good news is that the nearest airport is genuinely close to town. Gaggal airport, officially Kangra Airport (airport code DHM), sits just about 15 km from Dharamshala and roughly 18 to 20 km from McLeod Ganj, so once you land you are barely half an hour from your hotel.

The catch is that there is no nonstop flight from Mumbai to Dharamshala. You connect through Delhi. The Mumbai to Delhi leg takes about 2 hours 10 minutes, and the Delhi to Gaggal leg about 1 hour 25 to 35 minutes, so the two flights add up to only around three and a half hours in the air. Counting the connection at Delhi, the whole trip usually runs about 7 to 9 hours door to door. If you have seen '16 hours' quoted for flying, that figure assumes a long overnight layover; the flights themselves are much quicker than that.

One important practical note: Gaggal is a small mountain airstrip served by a handful of flights, mostly IndiGo and SpiceJet on the Delhi to Kangra leg, and services are limited and weather-sensitive. Winter fog and monsoon cloud can delay or cancel them, so confirm your connection is running before you count on it. Indicative connecting fares from Mumbai to Gaggal run about Rs 8,000 to Rs 22,000 one way depending on how far ahead you book and the season.

If Gaggal flights do not suit: fly to Chandigarh or Amritsar

When Gaggal is fogged out, fully booked or too expensive, two bigger airports make a sensible plan B. Chandigarh (IXC) has frequent flights from Mumbai and sits about 245 km from Dharamshala, roughly a 7 to 8 hour road transfer, with plenty of buses and taxis onward. Amritsar (ATQ) is another option, about 200 km out and around 5 to 6 hours by road, and it lets you fold in the Golden Temple on the way. Both trade a little extra road time for cheaper, more reliable flights than the Kangra airstrip.

How To Reach Dharamshala From Mumbai By Train

The train is the classic budget route, and it is what most people mean when they search for the Mumbai to Dharamshala train. The thing to know first is that you cannot book a ticket all the way to Dharamshala, because the town has no railway station. Every rail journey ends at a nearby railhead, and you finish the last stretch by road.

What is the nearest railway station to Dharamshala?

Dharamshala has no railway station of its own. The nearest railhead is Pathankot, about 85 to 90 km away, which is served by two adjacent stations: Pathankot Cantt (railway code PTKC) for mainline trains and Chakki Bank (CHKB) alongside it. From Pathankot it is roughly a 2.5 to 3.5 hour drive by cab or bus up to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj. Chakki Bank is also the start of the scenic narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway, a slow but beautiful toy-train line that runs to Kangra town, around 18 km short of Dharamshala.

Direct trains from Mumbai to Pathankot

A few daily and weekly trains run from Mumbai toward Pathankot Cantt on the Jammu route. The most reliable direct option is the Swaraj Express. Timings and running days change, so always confirm the live schedule and class-wise fare on IRCTC when you book.

Train (name and number) Boards at Approx duration Runs Notes
Swaraj Express (12471) Mumbai Bandra Terminus (BDTS) About 26 hours About 4 days a week The anchor direct train to Pathankot Cantt
Jhelum Express (11077) Pune (nearest on the Jammu route) About 30 to 32 hours Daily Board at Pune; halts at Pathankot Cantt
Other Mumbai to Katra / Jammu trains Bandra Terminus / other Mumbai stations About 26 to 34 hours Varies Any train halting at Pathankot Cantt works

Sleeper class runs roughly Rs 800 to Rs 1,000 for the Mumbai to Pathankot haul, with 3AC around Rs 2,200 to Rs 2,600 and 2AC higher, so even the comfortable classes stay cheap next to flying. From Pathankot, shared taxis, private cabs and HRTC buses all run up to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj through the day; the cab is the quickest at around 2.5 hours.

How To Reach Dharamshala From Mumbai By Bus

There is no single direct bus from Mumbai to Dharamshala; the 1,850 km distance is simply too far for one coach. What people mean by the bus route is a two-leg journey: get to Delhi first, then take the excellent overnight Delhi to Dharamshala service. It is the cheapest way to reach Dharamshala from Mumbai end to end, if you do not mind the time it takes.

Covering Mumbai to Delhi by bus alone is a punishing 24-hour-plus haul, so most travellers do that leg by train or a cheap flight and only take the bus for the mountain stretch. The Delhi to Dharamshala buses leave in the evening from ISBT Kashmiri Gate and reach Dharamshala by morning, about 10 to 12 hours for the roughly 520 km run. The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) runs the state service and private operators add AC Volvo coaches on top.

An HRTC ordinary bus is the cheapest seat at around Rs 700 to Rs 900, while the HRTC HimSuta and private AC Volvo coaches, the ones you want for an overnight, run about Rs 1,100 to Rs 1,700. Book the Delhi to Dharamshala leg a day or two ahead on the HRTC HimBus site or redBus, especially in the April-to-June and October peaks. Ask for a bus to Dharamshala rather than one that terminates at Kangra or Palampur.

How To Reach Dharamshala From Mumbai By Road

Driving from Mumbai to Dharamshala covers about 1,850 km and takes roughly 30 to 35 hours behind the wheel, which is a genuine two to three day road trip rather than a single overnight dash. The route is straightforward to follow: NH48 north out of Mumbai through Gujarat (Ahmedabad, Udaipur), on to Jaipur and Delhi, then NH44 to Chandigarh, and finally the hill road via Una or Pathankot up into the Kangra valley and Dharamshala.

Nobody should attempt this in one push. The comfortable version splits into two nights, for example a stop near Udaipur or Ahmedabad and a second near Delhi or Chandigarh, which also turns the drive into a proper holiday. Self-drive suits confident long-distance drivers and groups who want the freedom to stop; if you would rather be driven, a one-way cab from Mumbai to Dharamshala starts around Rs 25,000 and climbs with vehicle size and season. Avoid the final mountain leg after dark and carry cash for tolls and highway dhabas.

Cheapest vs Fastest: Which Way Should You Choose?

After all four modes, the honest recommendation comes down to what you value most on the day.

Fastest: Fly, connecting through Delhi to Gaggal airport. You trade about Rs 8,000 to Rs 22,000 for reaching Dharamshala in a single day instead of losing two, and you land just 15 km from town. If Gaggal flights are cancelled or costly, fly to Chandigarh and drive the last stretch.

Cheapest: Take a Mumbai train to Pathankot and a bus or shared cab onward. Sleeper class plus the transfer keeps the whole trip well under Rs 2,000, and you sleep on the train rather than paying for a hotel night.

Most scenic: Drive the full NH48 route over two or three days, stopping in Rajasthan on the way. It costs more in fuel and time than the train but buys you a road trip you will remember.

For most travellers the sweet spot is to fly into Gaggal and let someone else handle the rest. If you would rather not stitch the legs together yourself, our Dharamshala tour packages bundle the flights, transfers and hotels into one booking with a local agent who knows the Kangra roads.

Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj: Where Do You Actually Want To Arrive?

This trips up a lot of first-time visitors, so it is worth clearing up before you book the last leg. 'Dharamshala' is really two places stacked up a hillside. Lower Dharamshala, around Kotwali Bazaar, is the working town with the bus stand and the courts. Upper Dharamshala is McLeod Ganj, about 9 km and a 30-minute climb higher, and it is the part almost every tourist actually means: the Dalai Lama's temple complex (Tsuglagkhang), the cafes, the monasteries and the Triund trailhead are all up here.

So when you finish your journey, aim for McLeod Ganj unless your hotel is specifically in the lower town. From Gaggal airport it is about 18 to 20 km and 40 minutes by cab to McLeod Ganj. From Pathankot station it is roughly 90 km and 3 hours. Local buses and shared taxis link Lower Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj constantly through the day if you do get dropped at the lower bus stand.

How We Checked This Guide

Our driver Piyush was humble, professional, and made our trip comfortable and enjoyable. However, t

    Dharamshala Travel FAQs

What is the fastest way to reach Dharamshala from Mumbai?

Flying is the fastest way. There is no nonstop flight, so you connect through Delhi and land at Gaggal (Kangra) airport, only about 15 km from Dharamshala. The two flying legs total roughly three and a half hours, and with the Delhi connection the whole trip usually takes about 7 to 9 hours. Confirm the small Gaggal airstrip has a flight running for your dates, as its services are limited and weather-sensitive.

Is there a direct flight from Mumbai to Dharamshala?

No. There is no nonstop flight between Mumbai and Dharamshala. You fly Mumbai to Delhi, then Delhi to Gaggal (Kangra) airport, which is the nearest airport at about 15 km from town. If Gaggal flights are unavailable or too costly, a common alternative is to fly Mumbai to Chandigarh (about 245 km away) or Amritsar (about 200 km) and take the road from there.

What is the cheapest way to travel from Mumbai to Dharamshala?

The cheapest way is a train from Mumbai to Pathankot followed by a bus or shared cab up to Dharamshala. Sleeper class on the Mumbai to Pathankot run costs roughly Rs 800 to Rs 1,000, and the onward road transfer is inexpensive, so the whole trip stays well under Rs 2,000. It takes about 28 to 32 hours in total, but you sleep on the train and save a hotel night.

Is there a direct train from Mumbai to Dharamshala?

No. Dharamshala has no railway station, so no train reaches it directly. The nearest railhead is Pathankot, about 85 to 90 km away. The most reliable direct train from Mumbai is the Swaraj Express (12471) from Bandra Terminus to Pathankot Cantt, which takes about 26 hours and runs roughly four days a week. From Pathankot you continue by cab or bus for another 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

What is the nearest railway station to Dharamshala?

The nearest railway station is Pathankot, about 85 to 90 km from Dharamshala. It has two adjacent stations: Pathankot Cantt (PTKC) for mainline trains and Chakki Bank (CHKB), which is also the start of the scenic narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway. From Pathankot it is roughly a 2.5 to 3.5 hour drive by cab or bus up to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj.

What is the nearest airport to Dharamshala?

The nearest airport to Dharamshala is Kangra Airport, also known as Gaggal Airport which is about 15 km from Dharamshala.

How far is Dharamshala from Mumbai?

The distance from Mumbai to Dharamshala is around 1851 km. The fastest way to reach Dharamshala from Mumbai is by air.

Is there a direct bus from Mumbai to Dharamshala?

No single bus runs the full Mumbai to Dharamshala distance. The practical bus route is a two-leg journey: reach Delhi first (most people do this leg by train or flight), then take an overnight HRTC or private Volvo bus from ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dharamshala, about 10 to 12 hours for the 520 km hill stretch. AC Volvo fares run about Rs 1,100 to Rs 1,700 on that leg.

How many days do you need in Dharamshala?

Three to four days is a comfortable amount of time to enjoy Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj without rushing. That lets you see the Dalai Lama temple complex, Bhagsu and Dharamkot, walk part of the Triund trail, and take a day for the Kangra valley or nearby Palampur. Given the long journey from Mumbai, it is worth building in at least this much time rather than a quick weekend.

What is the best time to visit Dharamshala?

The best time to visit Dharamshala is from mid-February to mid-July, as the weather is pleasant at that time.
