How to Reach Namgyal Monastery in Dharamshala

Namgyal Monastery is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Dharamshala.

It is popular not just because it is the largest Tibetan Monastery in the world, outside of Tibet, but also because of the fact that it is considered the personal monastery of the Dalai Lama. It used to be located in Lhasa, set up in the 15th century, but during the Chinese invasion of Tibet, it was shifted to Dharamshala in India.

The monastery is located in a beautiful spot, overlooking the Dhauladhar Mountain Ranges, within the Tsuglagkhang complex. Getting to the monastery is pretty easy, since it is located pretty close to the city center. Getting there would take no more than 45 minutes, if you travel via NH503 and Khara Danda Marg. The road is pretty well maintained, so you can either drive your own car to the monastery or hire a taxi to take you there. On rare occasions, you can also take autos from McLeodGanj to the monastery.
