About Namgyal Monastery in Dharamshala
The Namgyal Monastery in Dharamshala is one of the most popular sites for Buddhist Studies. Also referred to as the Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies or the Namgyal Tantric College, it is the personal monastery of the Dalai Lama. It is the largest Tibetan monastery in the world, outside of Tibet. Located in McLeodGanj in Dharamshala, the monastery was founded in around 1564 in Lhasa, Tibet by the Third Dalai Lama, the monastery was named in order to honor Namgyälma, the female goddess of long life. After the Tibetan uprising, the monastery was shifted to India, where it continues to thrive and attract visitors from all over the world. Namgyal Monastery is responsible for maintaining the rituals and teachings of all the main lineages of Buddhism.
Tourists visiting Dharamshala make sure that they get to visit this monastery, and spend a few hours here just taking in the solitude, peace and quiet. The almost rhythmic chants of the monks who live and pray here will transport you to another world for sure. There are huge, imposing figurines of Lord Buddha all over the monastery, which make for interesting viewing. Make sure to give this place a visit, whenever you come to Dharamshala.
