About Hesaraghatta lake in Bangalore
Hesaraghatta Lake is one of the freshwater lakes in the outskirts of Bangalore. This man made lake is located in the north-western part of Bangalore, at about 30 km from the city centre. This freshwater lake was built in the year 1894 across the Arkavathy River under the guidance of Sir K. Seshadri Iyer, the then Dewan of Mysore state and the then Chief Engineer of Mysore, M. C. Hutchins to meet the drinking water needs of the city and still plays an important role in the city’s water supply.
This huge lake covers an area of more than 1000 acres. It is a very popular spot among nature lovers as it is one of the few existing spots where a large variety of exotic birds can be observed.
The Hesaraghatta lake is known not only for the lovely birds but also for the serene surroundings that make it an ideal destination to spend some moments away from the noisy and busy city life of Bangalore.
Boating and windsurfing are the major attractions of Hesaraghatta lake. Apart from being an excellent location for photographers, the Hesaraghatta lake is also a popular destination for cyclists and bikers. Monsoon and post-monsoon would be the best season to visit this lake.
It is actually a paradise for bird watchers with a variety of about 200 birds in and around the lake. Some of the common birds that can be sighted here are Kingfisher, Pond Heron, Magpie Robin, Black Kites, Paddyfield pipit, Bushlarks, Cormorants, Pale Billed, Flowerpecker, Black Drongo, Brahminy Kite, Egret and many more. The lake and surrounding region is good for nature walks as well. Migrant species like Spotted Eagles and Harriers can be sighted at the lake during the winter months.
There are many other interesting places which are located near the lake. While visiting Hesaraghatta Lake, tourists can also plan a visit to places such as the Government Aquarium and the popular dance village - Nrityagram. If interested then tourists can also visit Horticultural Research Institute and Indo-Danish Poultry and Dairy farms which are also located quite close to the Hesaraghatta lake. Travellers are also advised to visit the Byalkere Peacock Sanctuary which is located near to the lake.
