Is Dal Lake safe for tourists?
Yes, for normal sightseeing it is. Ride only in a boat that has a life jacket for every passenger, which has been compulsory since April 2025. Don't overload the shikara, don't swim, agree the fare before you board, and save the boat's hull number. Check current travel advisories for Srinagar before you go, as you would for any trip.
What is the best time of day to visit Dal Lake, morning or evening?
Both, for different reasons. Go at sunrise, about 5:30 to 7 am, for the floating vegetable market, still water and empty ghats. Go in the last hour before sunset for golden light on the Zabarwan hills, accepting that it's the busiest hour of the day. Avoid midday in summer, when the light is flat, the air is hazy and the water is crowded.
What should I wear and carry for a shikara ride?
Wear layers. Dawn on the water is cold even in June, so carry a light jacket from April to September and thermals, a down jacket and gloves from November to February. Carry cash in small notes, sunscreen, a power bank and, in July and August, mosquito repellent for evening rides. Leave the drone at home, and bring a steel bottle instead of plastic.
How do I avoid being overcharged for a shikara?
Go to a numbered ghat on Boulevard Road and read the rate board first. Then fix the route, the total time and "no shopping stops" before you board, and pay at the end. If the quote is far above the board, walk to the next ghat. The notified first-hour fare is Rs 700 per boat, so a Rs 2,000 quote for an hour is a starting bid, not a price. Are motorboats and jet skis allowed on Dal Lake?
Not at the moment. On 14 October 2026 the J&K and Ladakh High Court barred fuel-powered motorboats, motorised shikaras and jet skis on Dal Lake until further orders, and asked the government for a policy on cleaner boats. Rowed shikaras and kayaks still run normally. Treat any "speedboat ride" offer as off-limits until the court rules otherwise.
Can I book a shikara online?
Sometimes. Uber Shikara launched in December 2024 as a limited-period service, with one-hour rides from Ghat 16 between 10 am and 5 pm for up to four people, so check the Uber app to see whether it is running. The reliable option is to ask your houseboat or hotel to book a boat for you, which is also the easiest way to get a dawn floating-market ride.
Can you take a shikara ride in winter? Is Dal Lake frozen?
Yes, shikaras run all winter on open water, with blankets on board. The lake is rarely frozen solid. During Chillai Kalan, from 21 December, the edges and parts of Gagribal ice over, and a full freeze happens only in the hardest winters. A January dawn ride is cold but quiet, with snow on the hills and ducks on the water.
What items are not allowed on Dal Lake?
Plastic bottles and bags, drones, fishing gear, loudspeakers and fireworks are restricted on the lake. Since the High Court order of 14 October 2026, fuel-powered motorboats, motorised shikaras and jet skis are barred too. Camping on the shore isn't permitted. Carry a steel bottle and bring your wrappers back to land.
What should I check before booking a Dal Lake houseboat?
Check the grade and the registration number, and make sure the number on your booking matches the plate on the boat. A standard booking is for a room, not the whole boat, and you share the lounge, dining room and deck with other guests. Houseboats stay moored, so ask whether the shikara transfer to the ghat is included and until what hour it runs, and between October and March ask what heating the room has.
Which ghat is best for a shikara ride on Dal Lake?
The numbered ghats on Boulevard Road between Dal Gate and Nehru Park are the easiest, and each one shows a rate board. Ghats near Dal Gate have the most boats and the most touts. Ghats 23 to 25 have fixed fares to Char Chinar and Hazratbal. Ghat 16 was the pickup point for the Uber Shikara launch.
