Base Camp to Rhodo Valley: the Forest Jeep, Then the Trek

From the base camp, a Forest Department jeep takes you the last 4 km to Rhodo Valley on a rough forest track. This is the furthest any four-wheeler goes, and the jeep is arranged by KFDC rather than something you drive yourself. From Rhodo Valley the walking begins. There are two trails to the summit:

There is no airport or railway station at Munnar itself, so you fly or take a train to the nearest city and drive up from there. This corrects a common mix-up: you cannot take a train "till Munnar".

For the Munnar-side trek (the one most people do), aim for Cochin airport or the Aluva and Ernakulam railway stations, then drive to Munnar and follow the road route above.

Getting to Munnar First: Bus, Train and Flight

Since the trek starts from Munnar, your first job is simply to reach the town. Munnar is well connected by road across South India.

• By bus: Regular KSRTC and private buses run to Munnar from Kochi, Coimbatore, Madurai, Thrissur and Palakkad. From Bangalore it is about 463 km, and from Chennai a similar long-haul overnight run. • By train: Take a train to Aluva or Ernakulam (about 110 to 130 km away), then a taxi or bus to Munnar. Remember, no line runs to Munnar itself.
