Blessed with a large variety of flora and fauna, there is much more to see in the sanctuary even for those not particularly interested in nature. Home to many indigenous species, not the least of which is the majestic Bengal tiger, a lot of Thekkady’s tourism related activities are based around it. Apart from the tiger, the reserve is also home to a number of birds, some of them exceedingly rare like the Steppe Gull and the Paddyfield Warbler.
The reserve is also very well known for the number of elephants that are present here. Rounding off the list of mammals are also the Nilgiri Tahir, the lion tailed Macaque and Salim Ali’s fruit bat. The Periyar Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary is the most commonly visited and loved of the various places to see in Thekkady.
