Let the experts guide you to the best of Thekkady to experience rich culture and thrilling adventure, as per our traveler suggestions

Thekkady is a vital part of any itinerary for a visit to the state of Kerala. There are a number of places to visit in Thekkady. Covering most of the aspects of an ideal vacation for tourists, there are views of pristine natural beauty, of religious significance and of cultural importance. Due to the main attraction being the nearby Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thekkady tourist places are more oriented towards nature and its beauty. However, hidden amidst the beautiful forests are a few different sights that are unique to this region. This is an attempt to make a list of Thekkady’s places to visit in a comprehensive yet brief manner.

The main attraction in terms of places to visit has to be the Periyar Tiger Reserve. One of the most beautiful wildlife sanctuaries in the whole of India, The Tiger Reserve is the crown jewel of places to visit in Thekkady. Blessed with a large variety of flora and fauna, there is much more to see in the sanctuary even for those not particularly interested in nature. Home to many indigenous species, not the least of which is the majestic Bengal tiger, a lot of Thekkady’s tourism related activities are based around it. Apart from the tiger, the reserve is also home to a number of birds, some of them exceedingly rare like the Steppe Gull and the Paddyfield Warbler.

The reserve is also very well known for the number of elephants that are present here. Rounding off the list of mammals are also the Nilgiri Tahir, the lion tailed Macaque and Salim Ali’s fruit bat. The Periyar Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary is the most commonly visited and loved of the various places to see in Thekkady.

Read on to find out why our customers love us!

Ideally, how long should someone stay in Thekkady?

The ideal amount of time spent in Thekkady would depend on the traveller's reason for going there. While there are quite a few places around that are not to be missed to see the true beauty of the place, one can ideally see most of them in 3 or 4 days. However, as the biggest attraction is Periyar National Park, anyone visiting Thekkady to spend a few days observing the animals could do with staying a week and seeing some of the other nearby attractions as well.

What should someone pack when going to Thekkady?

In terms of clothes, muted colours like green, brown, grey are recommended as the national park is a main attraction. The clothes should ideally also be comfortable and easy to walk around in. Since the other attractions around Thekkady are nature oriented as well, it makes packing the essentials of mosquito repellent, flashlight and good shoes necessary as well.

How much do elephant rides cost in Thekkady?

In Thekkady the cost of a one and a half hour ride from the Elephant Junction is roughly Rs. 1300.

Is it better to visit Thekkady with friends or family?

Thekkady is a place that you would visit to be close to nature and as such, it is a peaceful and luxurious experience. A visit with family is ideal and it is an excellent place to spend some down-time with the family and relax. Of course, if you have friends that share a common interest with you, for example, wildlife/nature photography, then it is a great place to visit with them as well.

What safari is available in Thekkady?

There is boating, border hiking, Bamboo rafting and Jungle safari to Gavi. The safari includes trekking, pedal boating, visit to cardamon plantations as well as the museum.

Best Places To See In Thekkady

Another one of Thekkady’s unique selling points are the spice plantations in the area. There are a number of plantations growing tea, coffee, cardamom, pepper and even vanilla. A walk through the beautifully scented fields of these plantations at Murukady, Odamade and Vellaramkunnu is a highly recommended part of sightseeing in Thekkady. A few kilometres north of Thekkady lies the tiny, beautiful village of Chellarkovil. This village and the area around it is a panorama of scenic beauty and picturesque landscapes. Along with the beautiful surroundings and waterfalls, there are spice plantations to be seen here as well.

There are also a couple of places to visit in Thekkady of cultural and religious significance. The first of these is the Mangala Devi Temple, deep in the heart of the forest. A festival is organized here once a year but otherwise, the jungle has very much taken over the temple. For most of the year, permission from the Wildlife Warden of Thekkady is required to visit this temple. During the festivities, however, devotees are welcome. The other place is Panchalimedu, a  little far away from Thekkady, that is said to be where the Pandavas from the Mahabharata spent several years in exile. This lends an aura of cultural significance to the place. Along with a couple of other, smaller attractions, these are Thekkady’s tourist places that must not be missed.
