How to Reach the Periyar Tiger Trail

Periyar, by road,  is connected to all major towns in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Private and government buses are available from Madurai, Ernakulam, Cochin and Kottayam that take you tot he park. Another alternative is to take a bus to Kumily. You can always catch an auto or a bus from here to the Periyar National Park. Kumily is the nearest town to the Periyar Tiger Reserve, which is approximately 4 kms away from Thekkady.

You can also drive your own car or hire a cab to be dropped off at the gates of the Periyar National Park.

Are tiger sightings frequent in Periyar National Park?

Tiger sightings in Periyar are not all that frequent. However, the number of tigers has reached a healthy amount now and it is definitely worth taking a chance. Who knows, you might come face to face with one.

Is it safe for children to go on the tiger trail?

It is completely alright for children to be visit Periyar and it is quite safe as long as they are kept in check by their chaperones/parents. However, apart from the controlled area, it is hazardous for anyone to get separated from their group. 

Is photography of the tigers allowed?

Photography in case of a tiger sighting is permitted, however, as some sightings can be fleeting, it is a good idea to get as good a look as you can before whipping out the camera.
