How to reach Nubra Valley in Ladakh

Nubra Valley is a magical place with large mountains, dazzling lakes, and incomparable landmarks. The distance between Leh to Nubra Valley by road is 159 KMs via Khardung La road. The time duration is approximately four hours and forty minutes. Inner line permit is mandatory in order to visit Nubra Valley. Inner line permit should be obtained in person from Leh’s DM office or in the online site. Foreigners need Protected Area permit to travel from Leh to Nubra Valley. It can be obtained only through a registered travel agent. There are 3 routes available from Leh to Nubra Valley namely via Khardung La road, Wari La, and Agham Shyok road.

Travelling through Khardung La road is the most frequently used, easy and quick route. More than 90% of the tourists take this route to reach Nubra valley. Take the road from Leh towards Khardung La, cross the village of Khardung to reach Khalsar and move forward to gaze at the charismatic view of Nubra valley. Total distance covered in this route is 350 to 450 KMs including the round trip from Nubra Valley to Leh.

The route via Wari La is not used much to reach Nubra valley. For those who want to go straight from Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso without coming back to Leh might choose this difficult path. One needs to travel a longer distance when traveling by this road. Hence the duration will also increase. This road is mostly preferred by adventure seekers for the high difficulty level of driving a vehicle here.

The trail through Agham Shyok road is the most difficult route to reach Nubra Valley. There are no roads at all on this path. The road is broken and filled with dirty rocks which make it less accessible for traveling. If one doesn’t want to travel back to Leh, then this road can be taken since the travel time will be just 6 hours.

All though not much of suggestions, but since Ladakh is a region were mobile network is very limited or NO Access to service, proper instructions should have been given to the drivers and the hotels pre-booked of our arrival and departures. Hope people reading this understand it and properly plan for the future bookings.
