About Penang National Park in Penang
Earlier known as Pantai Acheh Forest Reserve, the Penang National Park is also known as the ‘Bay of Glowing Amber’ because of its splendid sunset views. The park covers an approximate area of 2.77 square km and was set up for the preservation and conservation of the flora and fauna along with the geological, ethnological, historical and archeological aspects of the place. It is rich in its natural heritage with more than 1,000 plant species and 271 species of wildlife. Diverse terrestrial habitats in the area like the rare meromictic lake, mangroves, mudflats and a vast hill dipterocarp forest are also covered in the conservation plan of the park.
Trekking at Penang National Park
This Penang National Park tour takes you to the exciting beaches of Pantai Kerachut and Pantai Kampi. As the trekking starts you are supposed to walk for around an hour and a half to reach your first stop which is the Monkey Beach paradise. On your way, see the giant lizard, mind-blowing butterflies, and crazy beaches like Teluk Ailing. You can also visit the Muka Head Lighthouse from here and retrace your path to reach Teluk Ailing again. Trek to Pentai Kerachut and enjoy the attractions there.
Attractions in Pantai Kerachut
Meromictic Lake is one of three unique lakes in Asia with two different layers of water. The bottom layer comprises of warm salt water while the upper layer is made up of fresh water from rain and rivers. Visit the park in the months of May to November which is the monsoon season. You can indulge in swimming in the lake and experience a soulful feeling of both warm cool fresh water all over your skin. You can even enjoy a mud spa and come across creatures like small crabs etc. if you visit the place during low tides.
Turtle Hatchery and Conservation Centre is responsible for taking steps of conservation to prevent turtle extinction. Get to see Turtle species like the Green turtle or Chelonia Mydas and Olive Ridley turtle or Lepidochelys Olivacea. These sea turtles are amongst the world’s smallest species which pay their visit to this island to lay eggs regularly. Don’t forget to book in advance for the turtle release session which you can enjoy with your loved ones for a unique experience.
