Auckland Harbour Bridge, Auckland (New Zealand)

Over the Waitemata Harbour in Auckland stands this eight-lane box truss motorway bridge which joins Northcote on the North Shore side from St Mary’s Bay in Auckland City. Auckland Harbour Bridge is operated completely by the NZ Transport Agency. This bridge is the second longest road bridge in all of New Zealand. It is 3,350 feet long and has a weight limit of up to 14 short tons and 13 long tons. Auckland Harbour Bridge was opened on 30th May 1959. The primary highlight about the Auckland Harbour Bridge in Auckland is that the New Zealand government has announced to fully-fund the walking link as well as a lane for cycles to pass through the bridge.

History of Auckland Harbour Bridge

The Auckland Harbor Bridge came into existence to fulfill the need to link Auckland City with the North Shore. An authority was set up in 1950 to raise the required funds and begin the construction of the bridge. To build the bridge, the construction required a ‘coat hanger’ design, with lattice girders on the 243-m span, allowing ships to pass beneath. The bridge had 4 lanes to begin with. With time, this proved inefficient. In September 1969, two lanes on each side were added. These lanes were pre-fabricated in Japan. Tolls were charged on the bridge until 1984. Even now, the bridge stands all firm linking Auckland City with the North Shore.

We opted for a self-driven tour organized by Wonder Bird Holidays, masterfully curated by their representative, Mr. Raunak. Mr. Raunak ensured meticulous planning, covering every detail, from plane tickets to hotel bookings and internal tour visits. The arrangement was so impeccable that we never had any idle moments, as each destination was thoughtfully designed step by step to eliminate any potential challenges. Right from the outset, Mr. Raunak comprehensively explained every aspect of the tour, including plane timings, vehicle pick-up and drop-off schedules, weather conditions at each location, clothing recommendations, coordination with local tours, their timings, approach locations, and parking conditions. The offered 3-to-4-star hotels were of excellent quality, strategically located in city centers for convenient travel. Mr. Raunak conducted a thorough review of the entire tour, addressing all our queries well before its commencement. He remained consistently available via phone to provide guidance. An instance highlighting his proactive approach occurred during our journey from Wanaka to Mount Cook in New Zealand. Faced with an indefinite road closure, Mr. Raunak promptly informed us and suggested an alternative route, allowing us to reach Mount Cook at 5 PM instead of 1 PM, unlike other travelers who waited in Omarama and arrived at 8:30 PM. We commend Mr. Raunak for his swift and decisive actions on that day. His regular check-ins, inquiries about our location and well-being, and unwavering cooperation compelled us to give him a perfect score of 100 out of 100. Thanks to the exceptional service of the Wonder Bird Holidays team, particularly Mr. Raunak, our tour was not only enjoyable but also hassle-free. For anyone contemplating a trip to Australia and New Zealand, we wholeheartedly recommend Wonder Bird Holidays.
