A 1-hour shikara ride on Dal Lake is included on your first afternoon. The lake spreads over about 22 sq km, with the Zabarwan hills on one side and the Shankaracharya hill above, and your ride starts from the houseboat on Nigeen Lake, the quieter north-western basin joined to the Dal by a narrow channel. In that hour the boatman takes you through Nigeen's willow-lined channels, past floating gardens and lotus beds. Nehru Park and the Boulevard houseboat rows are in the Dal's southern Gagribal basin, too far for a 1-hour ride, so see them on an evening walk along the Boulevard from your Srinagar hotel.

Gondola Ride in Gulmarg

The Gulmarg Gondola climbs in two phases. Phase 1 runs from Gulmarg to Kongdori and Phase 2 from Kongdori to Apharwat at close to 4,000 m, and a chair lift continues from Kongdori to Marry Shoulder. The Gondola is not included in the package price, and tickets are sold online only on the J&K Cable Car Corporation portal, so book them as soon as your dates are fixed. Getting to Kashmir from Kolkata: Flight or Train

By flight from Kolkata (CCU) to Srinagar (SXR)

There is no non-stop flight on sale from Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport to Srinagar this winter, so every booking has one stop, usually Delhi. The quickest is IndiGo 6E874, which keeps the same flight number through the stop. It leaves Kolkata around 11:35 and lands in Srinagar around 16:00, about 4.5 hours. Other one-stop flights through Delhi or Chandigarh take 5 to 7 hours or more. An early-morning departure lands you by early afternoon, in time for the shikara on Day 1. A later arrival moves the shikara to the next morning. One-way fares run from about Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000, and climb in Puja week and over Christmas.

By train from Howrah or Sealdah to Jammu Tawi

There is no through train from Kolkata to Srinagar. The Himgiri Express (12331) leaves Howrah at 23:55 on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and reaches Jammu Tawi around 13:00 two days later, a 37-hour ride. The daily 13151 from Kolkata Chitpur and the Sealdah to Jammu Tawi Humsafar (22317) are the other options. Expect about Rs 720 in sleeper, Rs 1,930 in 3AC and Rs 2,850 in 2AC for the full run, so check IRCTC for your class. The Vande Bharat to Srinagar (26401) leaves Jammu Tawi at about 06:20 and arrives around 11:10, so plan a night in Jammu. Ask the agents to add that night, and to start your pick-up at Srinagar railway station.

With flight or without flight?

Rs 32,480 is the land price: everything from your pick-up at Srinagar Airport on Day 1 to the drop on Day 7. Kolkata to Srinagar flights and train tickets are not included. Day-wise Plan: Kolkata to Kashmir in 6 Nights 7 Days

Day 1: Kolkata to Srinagar | Shikara Ride and Houseboat Night

Your driver meets you at Srinagar Airport and takes you to your houseboat on Nigeen Lake, the quieter north-western basin of the Dal near Hari Parbat. In the afternoon the included 1-hour shikara takes you across the lake, past kingfishers on the lotus stalks and boat-shops that paddle up selling saffron and kahwa. On the way back, stop at the crafts market for papier mâché boxes and walnut-wood carving. If your flight from Kolkata lands late in the afternoon, the shikara shifts to the Day 2 morning, which is the better light anyway. After dinner on board, spend the night on the Deluxe Houseboat.

Day 2: Srinagar Sightseeing | Mughal Gardens, Pari Mahal, Shankaracharya and Hazratbal

After breakfast, check out of the houseboat and leave for local sightseeing of Srinagar in your cab. The day covers the Mughal Gardens of Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh and Chashme Shahi, where the spring water is said to have healing properties, and Pari Mahal, the terraced garden on the hill above Chashme Shahi. Climb the stone steps to the Shankaracharya Temple for the widest view of the Dal and the city, then stop at the white marble Hazratbal Shrine on the lake's western shore. Each garden charges a small entry fee at the gate. If you travel in late March or April, swap one garden for the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, open only for those few weeks. In the evening, check in to your Srinagar hotel for dinner and the night.

Day 3: Sonamarg Day Trip | Thajiwas Glacier and the Sindh River

After breakfast, leave on a full-day excursion to Sonamarg, at an altitude of 2,740 metres. The road runs about 80 km north-east through Ganderbal and Kangan beside the Sindh River, a drive of 2.5 to 3 hours. Sonamarg is a long meadow ringed by glaciers, full of wild flowers in June and July and under snow from December. From the meadow, hire a pony or walk about 3 km up to the Thajiwas Glacier. Pony rates are set by the local association, so agree the price and the route before you start. The Z-Morh tunnel, open since January 2025, keeps Sonamarg reachable in winter, but heavy snow can still close the road for a day, and your agent will swap in another trip if it does. Return to Srinagar for dinner and the night at your hotel.

Day 4: Srinagar to Pahalgam via Pampore and Awantipora | Overnight in Pahalgam

After breakfast, check out and drive about 95 km south-east to Pahalgam on the Lidder River. The road first crosses the saffron fields of Pampore, which flower purple in late October and early November, and then reaches the Awantipora ruins, two 9th-century temples built by King Awantivarman. A short detour takes you to the Mattan temple complex. In Pahalgam, check in to Pahalgam Retreat near the Movera rafting point, walk the banks of the Lidder and wander the small market for walnut fudge and woollens. Day 5: Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari | Return to Srinagar

This morning is for the valleys around Pahalgam. Package cabs cannot go beyond the town, so hire a local union taxi at the Pahalgam taxi stand (at your own cost) for Betaab Valley, about 15 km away, Chandanwari, about 16 km, and Aru, about 12 km. Betaab Valley is the river meadow named after the 1983 film shot there, Aru is a quiet village of log houses at the edge of the pine forest, and Chandanwari is where the Amarnath trek begins. From December to March snow can close the Chandanwari road, so your taxi stops at Betaab instead. The Baisaran meadow above town was closed after April 2025 and was still shut in April 2026, so ask your agent whether it has reopened. After lunch, drive back to Srinagar for dinner and the night at your hotel.

Day 6: Gulmarg Day Trip | Gondola and the Meadow of Flowers

After breakfast, drive about 50 km from Srinagar to Gulmarg, the Meadow of Flowers, at 2,650 metres. The last stretch climbs from Tangmarg through pine forest, and the drive takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Gulmarg is India's best-known ski resort and has one of the world's highest 18-hole golf courses, laid out during British times. Ride the Gondola (optional, paid online in advance) to Kongdori, and on to Apharwat when Phase 2 is open, for snow even in April. From December to March, the road from Tangmarg needs a chained vehicle at extra cost, and you can hire snow boots and jackets at the Tangmarg shops. Return to Srinagar for dinner and the night at your hotel.

Day 7: Srinagar to Kolkata

After breakfast, check out at leisure. If your flight is in the evening, spend the morning at Polo View Market or along the Boulevard picking up saffron, dry fruit and a pashmina. Your driver drops you at Srinagar Airport, about 14 km from Rajbagh. Reach the airport 2.5 to 3 hours before departure, because cars are checked at the outer gate before the terminal. Flights home to Kolkata make one stop, usually in Delhi, and take about 4.5 to 7 hours. Travelling by train? Ask for a drop at Srinagar railway station for the Vande Bharat back to Jammu Tawi, and your connection home to Howrah or Sealdah.

Houseboats run on fixed meal timings because food is cooked ashore and brought over, power cuts happen, and housekeeping is not available at all hours.
