How to Reach Rajasthan from Kerala: Flights, Trains and Road

Kerala to Rajasthan is about 2,500 km by road, so almost everyone flies. The fastest option is IndiGo's one daily nonstop from Kochi (COK) to Jaipur (JAI), about 4 hours 15 minutes, though one-stop flights are far cheaper. From Trivandrum and Calicut you connect once, usually through Bengaluru, Mumbai or Delhi. The only direct train is the weekly Marusagar Express from Ernakulam to Ajmer, which takes close to two days. Driving the roughly 2,500 km is a 4-day trip each way.

 Departing from Kochi (Ernakulam)

Kochi has the easiest run to Rajasthan because of the Jaipur nonstop. Book a Jaipur-start trip such as the 6N/7D Riveting Rajasthan tour and you land and start sightseeing the same day. For this Jodhpur and Jaisalmer package, take a one-stop flight to Jodhpur, or land in Jaipur and let us add a night there before the 5 to 6 hour drive west.

Departing from Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram)

Travellers from Trivandrum fly one-stop to Jaipur, Jodhpur or Udaipur. Pick the Rajasthan city that suits the package start, since the connection is the same length either way. An early flight usually reaches Rajasthan by mid-afternoon, so ask us to keep day one light.

Departing from Calicut (Kozhikode)

From Calicut you can fly one-stop through Mumbai or Bengaluru, or board the Marusagar Express at Kozhikode and reach Ajmer about a day and a half later. Train travellers suit a Pushkar or Jaipur start, and the Stimulating Rajasthan tour ends in Pushkar, 15 km from Ajmer station.

Itinerary

Day 1: Jodhpur, Arrival and Sightseeing | Mehrangarh Fort and Jaswant Thada

Welcome to the Blue City. Our coordinator meets you at Jodhpur airport or railway station and drops you at Ranbanka Palace on Circuit House Road. Flights from Kochi that connect through Bengaluru, Mumbai or Delhi usually land by early afternoon, which leaves enough light for the city. Start at Mehrangarh Fort, which sits on a rock about 120 m above the old town. From the ramparts you look straight down on the indigo-washed houses that gave Jodhpur its nickname. A short drive away is Jaswant Thada, the white marble cenotaph built in 1899 for Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, at its best in late-afternoon sun. If time allows, stop at Umaid Bhawan Palace, where part of the building is still the royal family's home. Spend the evening at Sardar Market by the Ghanta Ghar clock tower for bandhani fabric, spices and mojaris. Dinner is on your own. Overnight in Jodhpur.

Day 2: Jaisalmer, Arrival and Sightseeing | Jaisalmer Fort and Gadisar Lake

After breakfast, check out and drive about 285 km west to Jaisalmer, roughly 5 hours through the Thar with a tea stop on the way. This is the Golden City, named for its yellow sandstone (Jaipur is the Pink City). Check in at Hotel Rang Mahal on Sam Road and rest for an hour. Then walk up to Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Qila), built in 1156 and part of the UNESCO-listed Hill Forts of Rajasthan. Unlike most forts in India it is still lived in, with homes, shops and Jain temples inside the walls. In the late afternoon head to Gadisar Lake, the 14th-century reservoir lined with chhatris and temples, where you can take a boat out for a small fee. Try ker sangri or dal baati churma in the old town for dinner. Overnight in Jaisalmer.

Day 3: Jaisalmer, Sightseeing and Sam Sand Dunes | Bada Bagh, Lodurva and a desert camp night

Have breakfast early and drive about 6 km north to Bada Bagh, a hillside of carved cenotaphs of Jaisalmer's Bhati rulers, quietest before 10 am. Continue to Lodurva, the old Bhati capital about 15 km from town, known for its Jain temple with a fine latticed stone gateway. After lunch, transfer to Savi Camp near the Sam Sand Dunes, about 40 km west of Jaisalmer. Late in the afternoon you ride a camel into the dunes to watch the sun go down over the Thar. Back at camp, the evening belongs to a Kalbelia dance and Rajasthani folk music performance, followed by dinner. The camel ride, the show and dinner are all included. For many travellers from Kerala this is the first night they have ever spent in a desert, and the drop in temperature after dark surprises most of them, so keep a jacket handy. Overnight at the camp.

Day 4: Jaisalmer, Sightseeing and Departure | Patwon ki Haveli and Thar Heritage Museum

Wake up to sunrise over the dunes, have breakfast at the camp and head back into Jaisalmer. Visit Patwon ki Haveli, a cluster of five merchant mansions begun in 1805 with some of the finest stone carving in Rajasthan, and then Salim Singh ki Haveli with its peacock-shaped roof brackets. The Thar Heritage Museum follows, a small private collection of desert life, fossils and folk instruments. Afterwards we transfer you to Jaisalmer railway station, airport or bus station for your journey home. Flights out of Jaisalmer run mainly in winter, so most Kerala travellers fly home from Jodhpur. Ask your planner to end the trip in Jodhpur if you want the wider choice of evening flights south (an extra transfer).

A 3N/4D Rajasthan trip from Kerala costs about INR 35,000 to INR 45,000 per person once you add return flights from Kochi, meals and entry tickets to the INR 13,999 package. A 6N/7D circuit that starts in Jaipur comes to roughly INR 42,000 to INR 53,000 per person.

Flights booked 6 to 8 weeks ahead are usually cheapest. The weeks of Diwali, Christmas and New Year cost the most, both for fares and for the desert camp.

Best Time to Visit Rajasthan from Kerala

October to March is the best time for a Rajasthan trip from Kerala. Days are dry and 22 to 30°C, which suits long fort walks, though desert nights in December and January can fall below 10°C.
