Aride Island In Seychelles (East Africa)
A visit to Aride Island in Seychelles is an essential stop for any visitor to discover what these islands were like before human settlement. Aride Island is the northernmost island of Seychelles’ granitic islands. It comprises an area of roughly 68 hectares and is 1.6 kilometers long and 0.6 km wide.
Attractions of Aride Island Nature Reserve
Aride Island shelters one of the most crucial seabird populations in the Indian Ocean. It is also home to more breeding species than any other spot in Seychelles. Eighteen species of native birds – including five only found in Seychelles – breed on Aride. The Island Conservation Society of Seychelles manages Aride as a nature reserve. Five bird species found only on Aride are Seychelles warbler, Seychelles fody, Seychelles magpie robin, Seychelles blue pigeon, and Seychelles Sunbird.
Aride is also the only natural colony of Wright's Gardenia; the lizard has one of the world’s most dense populations of reptiles. The island is home to the largest colony of tropical shearwater in the world. Non-breeding frigatebirds are also found here in great numbers. Green turtles and hawksbill turtles are regularly paying visit to the coast of Aride.
The best time to visit Aride Island Nature Reserve is November through February as migratory and endemic birds abound. The entry fees of Aride Island Nature Reserve is EUR 50 for adults and free entry for children aged below five. A two-hour guided walk of Arid Island Nature Reserve starts from the home of former island owner. Visitors can spot seabirds, walk past banana plantations, and encounter various species of plants.
Excursions to the island are operated by local tour operators. The local boat owners also take visitors to the island. Keep in mind that tour fee should also include the fee for the island. Visitors should maintain decorum and not make any noises to disrupt birdlife at the island.
