Earlier, the reservoir was named as the impounding reservoir, later it was changed to MacRitchie Reservoir. The reservoir now collects rainwater and conserve it for future use. It also provides free outdoor space to the tourists and local citizens to enjoy a nature walk, adventure sports, and other outdoor activities.

History of MacRitchie Reservoir: Till the early 19th century, most of Singapore was covered with forest. In 1819 when Britishers established their settlement in Singapore, commercial activities started taking place and the need for freshwater started increasing. Due to this need, a major portion of the forest was cleared to make Singapore one of the important ports for trading activities. Finally, in the year 1868, the construction of MacRitchie Reservoir was completed but the installation of pumps and distribution of water only begin in 1877.
