If you want a quiet romantic holiday with your loved one, go for the beaches. For adventure and excitement, head towards the national parks and hilly areas. And for a neat urban vacation, visit the Cape Town sightseeing spots in the city itself. You can try one or all and none of them will ever disappoint you.
Honeymoon Destinations in Cape Town
Uncanny as it sounds, Cape Town is a perfect destination to plan your honeymoon around. Starting from St James, Muizenberg, Kalk Bay and penguin-crowded Boulders Beach along the warm waters of Indian Ocean to the Camps Bay, Hout Bay and Clifton Beaches of Atlantic, there is simply no dearth of Cape Town destinations to plan a romantic seaside holiday. The various vine estates of Cape Winelands are also perfect for your honeymoon. What’s better than having specialised, candlelit dinners with your newlywed, with the best wines of the country as icing on top. For the adventurous lot, there are hiking trails up the Table Mountain, Lion’s Head or the Chapman’s Peak.
Nature Parks in Cape Town
Cape Town is dotted with numerous nature parks, full of native flora and fauna all around. The Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden with its wide range of blooming beauty, Table Mountain National Park around the magnificent peak, Tygerberg Natural Reserve, West Coast National Park are only some of many.
Other than these, here are the top 5 Cape Town attractions that must be there on your itinerary.
1. Table Mountain
Table Mountain is undoubtedly the prime Cape Town tourist attraction, towering over the city like a guardian angel. From the flat crest of the peak at 1086 metres, one can get the most spectacular view of the city of Cape Town in one side and the sparkling Blue Atlantic Ocean all around the rest. You can hike the distance, or go for the exciting cable car ride with 360°C views.
2. Robben Island
Located off the shore of Table Bay, Robben Island is famous for housing a notorious prison that once held Nelson Mandela, Father of the Nation of South Africa, and a military base and hospital. Now it is a historic destination to see on your trip to Cape Town, preceded by a ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront. Here you will also find the Nelson Mandela Gateway and a museum about the Island’s history.
3. Boulders Beach
Other than the azure blue water dotted with platforms of boulders and a long strip of warm white sand, the thing Boulders Beach is most well known for is the waddles of penguins that can be seen here. In 1982, a penguin couple landed here and now more than 2000 of their descendants call the beach their home. There is hardly any other warm climate beach in the world where you can swim and see penguins on a regular basis together. Be sure not to touch them, and only see them from a distance as they too deserve their space.
4. Victoria and Alfred Waterfront
The waterfront from where ferries for Robben Island leave is an important Cape Town point of interest in itself. With excellent views of the Atlantic, Table Bay and Table Mountain, the harbour is named after Empress Victoria and her son Alfred who laid the cornerstone for the place in the 1860s. Now it is a hub for local tourism dotted with shops, art galleries, restaurants, pubs, live amphitheatre and ship museum among other things.
5. Castle of Good Hope
Pentagon-shaped Castle of Good Hope is the oldest standing building of South Africa, and thus one of the most important Cape Town attractions. The building represents the history and origin of the city, as the castle was built by Dutch East India Company for their business purpose. Now it houses a Military Museum and Iziko Museum, telling stories of the city’s past.
