Robben Island In Cape Town

Spend a day exploring the beauty of Robben Island

Robben Island Tour, Johannesburg

The Robben Island in Cape Town is a roughly oval island which is also a UNESCO world heritage site and stays on the list of must do things for the tourists.

The Dutch translation of its name means the ‘seal island.’ The various historical sites present on the island have lately formed the Robben Island Museum. The major centres of attraction here include the island graveyard, the disused lime quarry, the Bluestone quarry, the army and navy bunkers, Robert Sobukwe’s house and last but not the least, the max security Robben Island prison that also includes Nelson Mandela’s cell. Robben Island was quite infamous during the apartheid years. It was the central institution of brutality and the keepers of the prison were advised to break the morale of apartheid protesters. A lot of freedom fighters had spent more than a quarter of a century during their imprisonment here. Today, Robben Island stands as the symbol of victory of humanity over adversity.

The Robben Island history is very rich and the island is also fascinating from environmental and geographical perspectives. At one time, this island was a part of the mainland. The Robben Island is basically the peak of a mountain, the rest of which remains under water these days. The first democratically chosen President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela had to spend 18 years from his total 27 years of prison on the Robben Island. Apart from him, the nation’s other Presidents, namely Kgalema Motlanthe and Jacob Zuma also spent some years over here. Second half of the 19th century saw the island becoming a leper colony and animal quarantine station. During the Second World War, the island was also used as a military base. Hence, the history of the Robben Island in itself is too vast and eventful to be ignored which becomes another reason for the tourists to have interest in gaining the experience of visiting it.
