Colombo Travel Guide

Colombo tourism is characterized by beaches, Buddhist temples, sprawling gardens, and historical landmarks. Colombo is the capital of Sri Lanka which is a very beautiful place. The capital is pretty clean and pleasant with many destinations to visit. Colombo is the city which offers many adventurous activities such as skydiving, surfing, diving and exploring the oceans deep inside and much more.

Colombo tourism has everything. Visit the zoo and check out many species of fauna that you would not have known earlier. The Colombo travel guide offers some great destinations. The city is a mixture of modern life and colonial buildings and ruins of it. Sri Lanka was colonised by Portuguese and Britishers. The architecture here is reflective of its rich heritage. The city has many major attractions. Galle Face Green is located in the heart of the city. A beach along the Indian Ocean coast, many locals and tourists visit this place. Gangaramaya Temple is one of the oldest temples. It is a perfect mixture of Sri Lanka, Thai, Indian and Chinese architecture. The temple attracts a lot of visitors. Viharamahadevi Park is an urban park located in Colombo Sri Lanka.

Explore the history

Colombo Fort Area: There is a lighthouse where you can climb and enjoy the nature’s amazing sight. There is actually no fort here, the city center is known as Fort Area.

Mount Lavinia: This residential neighborhood features some of the best spots to hang-out in the evening. The Mount Lavinia Beach is ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Also, watching the sunset views here one of the top things to do in Colombo.

National Museum of Colombo: It is Sri Lanka’s largest museum, and was built in 1876. A peaceful courtyard surrounds the beautiful building that covers the National Museum. It was founded by a British Governor of Sri Lanka. There are various statues and exhibits and some antique items that were owned by a known family of Sri Lanka.

Delhiwala Zoo: The National Zoo of Sri Lanka is one of the main places to visit in Colombo. It houses more than 300 species of animals within its area of 10 hectares.

Memorial Hall: In 1948, Sri Lanka got its independence from Britain. The statue of Sri Lanka’s first president The Father of the Nation is in front of this monument. There are regular religious events and celebrations which occur here. One can enjoy the peace as there is no such crowd on regular days.

Wander the Markets

Pettah Market: This market is a very popular place which is near to the Fort area. If you love shopping with Colombo sightseeing, this is the place for you. You can get some good items at a very good price. This is a good place to pass the time as you will also see any religious any religious building and this overall makes it a good-to-go place. Eat some delicious local street food.

Galle Face Green: Perhaps one of the most popular tourist places in Colombo, it is a cluster of green lawns very next to some narrow beaches. Wind flows really fast and a great place to walk at night. Initially, it was made by the Dutch for some war strategy, but now this place is considered as perfect for running, kite flying, playing cricket and football. You will see lots of couples out what can be more romantic than watching the sunset at a beach point. Have some great spicy Indian food.

Some Religious places

Vihar Mahadevi Park: The biggest park of Colombo is also an attraction. This is not only a park as you can also enjoy water slides, café, stalls, and large playground with a small aquarium. If you are travelling with your children, spend some quality time with your family or friends.

Gangaramaya Temple: Being the biggest temple of Buddha, it consists many buildings. You need some really good time as there are lots of things to see. There is Buddha made up of stone, silver, plastic, and gold. You can also donate one if you want to.

At the center of the Sri Lanka, a huge lake named Beira serves its beauty. There is a small island in the middle of that lake. Some narrow canals connect the other lakes as well as with the Indian Ocean. The city has a rich colonial heritage. It is not the capital, but known as capital. Not only the beauty, it is a great place for shopping lovers. Enjoy the seafood in the Sri Lankan cuisine. It’s a great place and one must visit this place if he/she is traveling in Asia.

    • Trip to Colombo

Excellent & Very Beautiful Country....!! The wild @ Sigriya having excellent and adventurous location. Cinnamon Citadel @ Kandy provide us very memorable welcome. Whether at Kandy was really excellent and we enjoyed a lot. Okary Tea Bush @ Nuwara eliya hotel was good. It's too cold place. Nice view from window. @ Bentota we stayed at two resorts-pandanus beach and cinnamon bay. Both properties are excellent. Cinnamon is very big property with all amenities. @ colombo we stayed at Marino Beach. At sight very slow process of check in. Rooms were not ready. But after check in property is excellent with rooftop pool. Over and above all stars goes toTravel Ceylon who has arranged this trip for us. Sales personal Mr. Chatura is having excellent knowledge and skill and ability to customize package according to our requirement. All members of trip are highly satisfied with the way they provided service. Last but not least, Mr. Dilipa our guide has help us a lot for roaming around all places according to interney. Finally Driver was also excellent and ride us safely during entire Journey. 7star appraisal to Travel ceylon. Cold Whether at Nuwara Eliya and Boating experience was awesome. Would definitely visit srilanka again If I get chance. Inspite of Bad happened in April, entire country is moving ahead to uplifting country. Thanks to all Local to whom we interact.

    • Trip to Colombo

Sri Lanka is an island country..where the contours of the land itself forms a kind of sinewy poetry. A very special island that travellers, from Sinbad to Marco Polo, dreamed about and with similar aspirations, me and my fiancée decided to visit SL for our honeymoon. We explored different options and stumbled upon Travel Triangle, who seemed well versed with SL, were offering competitive prices. Had a Chat an online agent - Swati and within a day, we received 4 quotes from 4 Vendors. We decided to go forward with 'Direct Link' as the Travel Co-ordinator Anto, was polite/courteous, knowledgable and honest, was able to understand our requirements and provide the best tour schedule i.e 5 days and 4 nights at Colombo/Kandy - Nuwara Eliya - Nuwara Eliya - Bentota - Bentota/Colombo. This ensured that we were able to enjoy various topographies urban/hill station/mountains/beach. Anto co-ordinated end to end right from time we had initial chat to the time we completed the tour. We Had to pay 10% as Booking and the remaining amount was paid just before we boarded our flight to Colombo from Chennai. ( They do give option to pay the remaining amount on arrival in Colombo, however, with network issues, it might be tad difficult, esp in receiving OTPs et all) Mr Hafis was our assigned tour guide as well as transporter. He was a through professional, brilliant knowledge and insights on the tourist places. He was so amazing with providing all the statistics, dates, dimensions, USPs of the places that made us admire and appreciate the places even more than we would have probably done. Also, special mention about his driving skills, we spent so much time on road but not once we experienced any jerk or lack of comfort. All the Hotels were brilliant - Topaz (Kandy) , Galway Heights(Nuwara Eliya) and Pandanus Beach Resort & Spa (Bentota). Staff, Room/View from Room and Food. Word of caution - If you are a VEG like me, it is rather important that you let reception know about it , as and when you check-in the hotel. Direct Link are experts in chalking out the travel schedule in such a way that you enjoy the max number of tourist places in as little time as possible. Of all the travel options provided, we enjoyed the below mentioned the most - Ambevala Farm, Strawberry Farm Batik Factory and Gems Museum Bluefield Tea Estate ( Mohamed the Tea Guide was Brilliant) Ramboda, Devon and St Clair's Falls Gangaramaya Temple Gregory Lake Hanuman Temple and Sita Amman Kovil Kandy Lake, Temple of Tooth Relic and Kandyan Cultural Show, Upper Lake Drive Madu River Safari - CINNAMON ISLAND-BUDDHIST TEMPLE-HINDU TEMPLE - DELTA- FISH FARM Marine Drive Important National Monuments Nuwara Eliya Post Office and Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage ( Break Fast at Villa Pinnewala) Addressing the elephant in the room, the security in SL post the 21st April attacks is pretty heavy and upto the mark. Just be prepared for random checks of the car by the Sri Lankan Army. However, it does not have much impact on your experience. No matter where you go, you are greeted by the happily smiling Sri Lankan, as afterall they do hold the World Record of most plesant and smiling people in the world record i.e ~ 86% of the poulation (Another gem shared by our tour guide - Hafis) We had a great time in Lanka and take this opportunity to THANK Travel Triangle, Swati, Direct Link, Anto and Hafis for making this a beautiful trip that we will cherish forever.

Thirdly, our chauffeur guide Mr.Dilip was not knowing Hindi, so we have faced lot of problem of under sting language, he was cooperative but left us on 4th day and back to his home, Tempo Driver does not know English so last 2 days was not received any information of sight sneering that day there was need of Mr. Narang but he was also not available. Visited Sri Lanka with Travco adventures through Travel Triangle. Was a bit apprehensive about the sensitive situation in Colombo. But Mr. Shanil from Travco rest assured me of our safety. He did good arrangements for us. The vehicle and the driver were very good. The hotels provided were good except for The Grand Concord, Colombo. The executive from Travel triangle was calling multiple times till the booking was done. But sorry to say, once they received their payment, nobody bothered to answer our calls or queries. Had read about previous reviews of travel triangle on the net and I share the same views. Once they get their payment.. They don't wish to know you. Wonderful Sri Lanka. Nuwara Elliya was breathtakingly beautiful. The beach at Bentota was fabulous. The staff of all the hotels were very cordial and welcoming.

Had a wonderful time in Srilanka. Thanks to Chathura for planning our itinerary . Apart from Oak ray tea Bush hotel, rest was superb. Special mention to our Chauffeur Mr Nandana, he took care of us very well. Highly recommended these guys . My trip started with tragic bomb blasts in colombo for which our prayers are with people of Srilanka. At this tough time it was ensured from the tropical ceylon team and especially our chauffeur Mr Nandana that we are safe , coordinating with authorities and ensuring we donot enter or go towards affected areas. People of Srilanka are very friendly and always ensure that they help to their best of abilities.

Fantastic experience from the start to the finish. A big thank you to Divya (travel teriangle) and Ganidu (akin Lanka). These guys are the one to go to. Absolutely amazing experience with them both. My parents reached just the day before the unfortunate event of bombing in and around Colombo. But Ganidu from the Akin Lanka was amazing in assisting them throughout and the driver Saliya was exceptionally amazing and treated my parents with utmost respect and looked after them so well. Thank you so much guys. This is what true Sri Lanka is, the best hospitality ever. God bless. Best wishes from all of us.
