Visit St. Wolvendaal Church
One of the best Protestant Churches in Colombo is Wolvendaal Church. The best thing about this Church is its ambiance. Unlike other churches that exude a religious sparkle, St. Wolvendaal is actually eerie. With a surprisingly somber atmosphere and a sense of history, it absolutely makes sense to visit St. Wolvendaal Church. The church was built in 1749 by the Dutch in Pettah, Colombo and has a typical old building ambiance to it. It is not musty, by any means, but it is easy to see that it has endured ages in history. Overlooking the church premises is a graveyard full of tombs dating back to 1750.
Culture and Architecture
Pettah is a busy place. In sharp contrast to the hustle and bustle of daily life lies the church. It is a great idea to visit St. Wolvendaal Church just to see the contrast firsthand. Decorated with beautiful Dutch murals, this church has a certain gravity. Despite its age-worn appearance and eerie ambiance, St Wolvendaal’s Church is not abandoned. Every Sunday it hosts a lively service that brings people together. Visit St. Wolvendaal Church on a Sunday to see how spiritual the place truly is. Apart from this marriage ceremonies, baptisms, name day celebrations, and funeral services all take place here.
Folklore and History
All the buzz and people notwithstanding, the church retains a certain sobriety and composure. Another remarkable feature that makes it absolutely worthwhile to visit St. Wolvendaal Church is its high windows and doors. In fact, thinking of just windows and doors makes it sound very bland. These are simply enormous windows and doors built in an old fashion that almost touch the ceiling from the ground up. Built in a place that was once known as ‘Wolf’s Dale’, St. Wolvendaal Church is named after the same and is now among one of the most frequented hotspots in Colombo. The pulpit, choir, altar, and pews are all carved out of wood and paint an exquisite picture.
Visit St. Wolvendaal Church to experience the taste of Dutch Colonial architecture and history. There are numerous relics of colonial history preserved within St. Wolvendaal Church. The fact that this place has not seen any restorative work lends a ring of authenticity to the historical place. From the original box locks and escutcheon on the doors to English armchairs and early Dutch chairs, this church preserves time itself. There is even a nineteenth-century pipe organ for open viewing. Possibly one of the oldest buildings in Colombo, its unique architecture and historical significance invites history buffs all over the world to visit St. Wolvendaal Church. Well worth the visit, this church is one of the top places to visit in Colombo.

Trip to ColomboSriLanka in general is a nice place with enough natural resource, water falls, fruits with humble people . Roads were all maintained very well, mostly people follow traffic sincerely. Our driver Manju was very particular about time and he was at pickup point daily and also had multiple plans arranged for the full day. If some of the attractions are not available then he had other plans to fill our day to best utilize the day. He was explaining multiple attractions on our way and tried his best to answer all of our queries. This is one of the benefit of having an experienced English speaking driver during the trip. I asked to skip tooth relic temple as I believe temples should not have entry fees, if so then it will not be a temple instead will become an entertainment center. We had visited multiple places on our way, many of them had entrance fees like Botanical Garden, Pinnawala Elephant Camp, Turtle Hatchery. Entry fees are made same for both Indians and also any other foreigners, so I felt the price was little high. Gem stone Mining, Moon stone mining, Tea Factory, Mask Factory, Herbal Farm, Batik Factory were all had free entry and the information they provide were very useful information, at the end of the trip they will take you to their sales shop and create an environment where you will mostly end up buying something, which is worth as you had free entry and also free information session. Some corrections which I would focus next time >> ---------------------------------------------------------------- I was interested to go to some shopping place where I could find many souvenir items, but could not get useful details from driver or throughout the trip. I believe I should have visited Laksala to get these. Trip from Nuwara Eliya to Bentota was very long, we could have added one another place in middle to relax. I liked Galle city very much, so should have stayed somewhere nearby. Colombo bazaar trip was not much useful as this is something like a busy street in India as well. Driver dropped us in some fancy restaurants but I guess we could have gone to an only Indian restaurant present in Galle for lunch instead. Sigiriya, Yala seems a nice place so would like to cover next time. Ritigala & Rumaskala has sanjeevi mountain itseems. Some of the hotels were just sufficient and not very luxury Overall enjoyed my trip in Srilanka and liked cleanliness, nature. Would like to visit once again.
Trip to ColomboThis was our first international tour. Traveldek Executive Mr.Fiyaz assisted us very good in respect to every need from the first day of contact till few days before the journey. Due to his personal reasons even if the cab details and Driver number was forwarded to me 1hr before my departure from my country. The cab was nice and the driver was helpful. As the driver was unaware of the details of the tour contract, the problem started from the second morning. However, the driver make it up quickly. We were not even greeted with water bottle at our arrival at Colombo. Not even a single person keep contact with us as we proceeded. The hotels are good and they were really good in services also. Food from the hotels were very tasty, healthy and fresh. They were safe and secure for foreigners. We could come to know about Srilanka in hands with Traveldek in a good manner. The service grade might have to improve. The agents must be in touch with the clients atleast when it is asked so. Hope they should flourish in this service sector with more professional attitude. Should provide a good guide who really eager to share information and really knowledgeable. The hotel Skandig, Trincomalee,Amaya lake.
Trip to MaldivesHotel at Colombo couldn’t give me a proper dinner at 10 pm even and the local contact Mr Ruksaan was not available for a reply. Tha Travel from Airport to NuwaraEliya was tiring and after the same the Hotel could not provide us with dinner despite the fact they had accepted the payment in full. Hotel Mount Heaven at Ella was in a fabulous location and the people were very cosy. The Elephant orphanage was fantastic. Maldives trip was a memorable experience
Trip to ColomboNew Delhi (Delhi), India 227 The best ! Review of Pearly Gates Lanka Reviewed 2 days ago When I booked the tour through Pearly gates I was expecting good service, but ended up being totally overwhelmed by the experience I had with this company. I first contacted Nimni over phone and was happy at her prompt answers and friendly tone.I booked with her soley on the basis of what I could guage of her over conversations on phone.( Travel Triangle was the aggregator) She had promised me a good guide cum driver and a big van for the three of us (my husband, son and I ). Rikfy picked us up from my hotel first ( I was atteding an international conference) and then my family from the airport and the next seven days we spent in Paradise ! He was a careful driver, a wonderful guide and a true friend. Attentive at all times, smiling advising, he made our tour truly special. Behind all this was Nimni - calling us to find if everything was ok. They had booked good hotels, the travel by van was very comfortable but most important - the personal touch at every moment by Rikfy made everything special. On the last evening we ordered dinner at the restaurant in Hotel Ocean Colombo but when the food didnt come even after almost an hour we were very upset. We called Rikfy and though it was after 10.30 pm he came and took us to an Arabian restaurant. As some of us are diabetic this was a life saver !.I recommend Pearly gates to everybody if you want true service with a smile, and Nimni and Rikfy really make you feel at home in Sri Lanka !
Trip to Colombo- Driver was not giving daily quota of water bottles regularly. One day even after reminding also, he did not give any water bottle. - Driver was supposed to take the guests to Gangaram temple in Colombo but they were not taken there, even after reminding. - river was mostly interested in taking the guests to those places where entry fee was exorbitantly high and was not worth visiting. - Driver did not give the SIM card on the first day after arrival. Upon reminding, he gave a SIM card which did not have any charge. People in India were not able to contact the guests as SIM card was not recharged and activated. Finally, I had to recharge the SIM card from India online and then only calls can be made. - Though breakfast was complimentary, guests were served different breakfast at Hotel Heaven Seven in Nuwara Eliya on 9th October. Hotel gave only idli and vada to the guests which is very unfortunate. So, overall, I would give 2.5 out of 5 in the rating.
Trip to ColomboWe traveled to Srilanka in the first week of October 2019. The arrangements from Lanka Reisen were excellent and as per our discussions before the trip. The vehicle provided to us was very comfortable. And our friendly chauffer/guide, Mr.Saman, made the trip enjoyable. We had multiple hotel bookings, which were all quite nice (though we would have liked a bigger room in Colombo..). Couple of small issues: Getting the vouchers before the trip needed some follow-up. Everything was arranged for sure, just that there was delay in sending the vouchers causing unnecessary anxiety. And there was a hitch during checking out from one of the hotels, due to some issue with payment. It got sorted out soon, but could have been easily avoided. But all in all, I had a pleasant experience and would recommend Lanka Reisen to others.
Trip to ColomboColombo hotel could have been better as it is not a three star hotel Kandy was good
