About Sigiriya Attractions

History of Sigiriya

Sigiriya is only a couple centuries younger than Sri Lanka, built by a non-royal person for King Kashyapa. The latter brutally murdered his father and stole the throne from the rightful heir and his half brother Moggallana. Kashyapa feared that his brother might try to take revenge from him, and escaped Anuradhapura to take shelter in Sigiriya. He built his fortress on top of a giant impenetrable rock. The evidence of Sigiriya history dates back to the fifth century BC. Sigiriya transformed overnight from a rocky zone to a city teeming with people, heritage and culture. Nobody could have seen this transformation coming back then.

Languages Spoken in Sigiriya

Besides the two official languages spoken in Sigiriya which are Tamil and Sinhala, several other languages are also spoken. These include Sri Lankan English, among others. It is a multilingual city, so rest assured you will not face any issues communicating with the locals in Sigiriya Sri Lanka.

The distance between Sigiriya and Colombo is 150 km. If you fly from Colombo to Sigiriya, it will take you half hours. It is the fastest way to rea

ch Sigiriya. Cinnamon Air is a reputed domestic airline which has an air taxi operating regularly from Colombo to Sigiriya. It can only accommodate around 8 people, so make sure to book in advance. The Sigiriya flights embark from Colombo to Sigiriya at 10 AM from Monday to Sunday.

Another way to reach Sigiriya from Colombo is via train. However, there are no direct trains to Sigiriya. A feasible option is to board the train f

rom Colombo Fort to Habrana. Habrana is 17 km away from Sigiriya. The train leaves at around 6:10 AM regularly from Colombo Fort railway station and takes around 5 hours to reach Sigiriya. You can take a taxi from Habrana to reach Sigiriya. The journey will cost you a nominal sum.

You can reach Sigiriya from Kandy, Sri Lanka via bus. The distance between Sigirya and Kandy is 90 km. First, visit the bus terminal in Kandy and t

ake a bus to Dambulla. Your bus journey will be filled with sights of attractive cave temples. From Dambulla, grab a local bus to Sigiriya. The buses to Sigiriya leave within every 30 minutes from Dambulla bus terminal in the day time. A bus will take around 4 hours to reach your destination. The Sigiriya map gives a glimpse into the uncomplicated bus route. You will find the buses packed with people in the evening, and it will be enormously hard to find a seat in the bus. If such a situation arises, you can hire a cab from Kandy bus terminal. There are a plethora of cabs stationed near the terminal. The driver will take you to some of the major attractions around this region.

Surbhi's 9 days trip to Sigiriya

Hotels were good with decent vegetarian options available. The cab was in good condition with decent driver, but try allocating someone who is aligned with the hectic/lenient schedule of the trip. Also for the travel agent services, initially itenary was planned and full trip can was chosen with a purpose of going to nearby restaurant with convenience. This was clarified over call as well..but this 1as questioned when we wanted to visit a restaurant for lunch. Paid extra for this. May be travel agent should specify how many kms we are allowed to move in a particular day or trip if we are taking cab for complete trip...else there is no use . Also the Sim cards which were given in the package stopped working one day before our trip ended...whi h caused lot of hassle when we were outside the hotel. Overall the trip experience was good , but could have been better if above points were taken care of

We booked 7 day itinerary to Sri Lanka with Dinagi travels. Chamodi was our travel agent and she was very proactive in answering all queries and customizing the itinerary as per our requirements. Our car was very clean and comfortable and our driver Gamini was very good. All the hotel stays were good except the one in Bentota , Laluna, it seemed not well maintained, but beach was accessible with a 5 min boat ride. I would highly recommend to book with Chamodi.

A bike or a cycle is the most convenient mode of transportation to get around in Sigiriya. Renting bikes in the city is pretty easy and they don’t cost a bomb.

You should set at least 3 hours aside to see this beautiful city and the attractions that it houses. Make sure to visit the Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Sigiriya Museum.

The best thing to do in Sigiriya is embarking on a safari to explore the flora and fauna in Kaudulla National Park and Minneriya National Park. You can feed the elephants on your safari trip.

Taking the flight of stairs up to Sigiriya rock fortress is by far the most adventurous thing to do in Sigiriya. It is an intense activity and not everyone is up for this thrilling endeavour.
