The Sigiriya Rock fortress is situated in the northern region of Matale District,which is at a close distance to the Dambulla town.

According to history, King Kashyapa chose this site as his new capital during the time period between 477 and 495 CE. Even the surroundings of this tourist site reflect the significant prehistoric period and is inhabited since the prehistoric days. There are several other rock shelters that can be found around Sigiriya Rock. The history of the small town of Sigiriya involves the accounts of Kashyapa I - he was the son of king born from a consort who did not belong to a royal family.
