About Sigiriya Rock in Sigiriya

The Sigiriya Rock fortress is situated in the northern region of Matale District,which is at a close distance to the Dambulla town. According to history, King Kashyapa chose this site as his new capital during the time period between 477 and 495 CE. Even the surroundings of this tourist site reflect the significant prehistoric period and is inhabited since the prehistoric days. There are several other rock shelters that can be found around Sigiriya Rock. The history of the small town of Sigiriya involves the accounts of Kashyapa I - he was the son of king born from a consort who did not belong to a royal family.

What’s Interesting?

There are various rock inscriptions that can be found close to the drip ledges on the surface of various shelters. These inscriptions are depicting the Buddhist influence in this part of Sri Lanka and are one of the major highlights in Sigiriya. If you are an adventurer and want to pump your adrenaline, then trying out the much-famous Sigiriya Rock climb is a must! You have to cover around 1,200 steps to reach the top, which is totally worth it - thanks to the breathtaking view!

Archaeology

The site is surrounded with ruins. However, a lot of archaeological work has been done on them for the purpose of restoration. This restoration procedure began during the 1890s. On your Sigiriya Rock tour, you’ll find many such ruins around that will tempt you to know about the vast archaeological history of this iconic place. There are various mythological events also attached to this site that all the more enhance its charm. The rocks are beautifully embellished with frescoes as well, bringing history and art together. There are many interesting places around for you to explore. There used to be a lion’s head that covered both sides of the entrance but it collapsed many years ago and now one can only hear about it from people. A visit to Sigiriya Lion Rock is a must if you want to enlighten yourself on the historical essence of the country of Sri Lanka.

Our holiday with trip travel hub was good. Efficient service for people in our group wanting a change in itenary at last moment. Travel agent was very accommodating. Gave us good car with driver. Only at Mirissa the room given to us was on 4th floor but no lift facility.

I would say my overall trip was fine but there is scope of improvement when it comes to itinerary and planning. We could not cover a lot of points irrespective of the fact we started everyday as early as 9am. We barely got any time to shop in Colombo, in fact Lotus tower was the only place we could vidit after our arrival to Colombo and the cab driver didn't let us shop the next day or on our last day when we headed 5-6 hours early to the airport. The hotels were good except for the fact that two of them had no lifts but we had to climb stairs which was not beforehand. In fact the hotel which had a great view in Kandy, I requested the agent if we could stay there instead of going to Nuwara eliya but since it was last minute it was not acceptable. I would give 3 out 5 as there is scope of having better experience. My best memory is the time we spent in the Millennium elephant orphanage where we fed and bathed the elephant and walked with one.
