About Sigiriya Museum in Sigiriya

Managed by the Central Cultural Fund of Sri Lanka, Sigiriya Museum is a museum of archaeology located in Sigiriya near Sigiriya Rock Palace.

Just next to the museum is the ticket counter to the Sigiriya Rock. What happens is that visitors usually choose to climb the rock first and then go to the museum. The climb to the top of the rock is very difficult. By the time people return, they get so exhausted that they don’t visit the museum. It is suggested that visitors go to the museum first and then go climb up the rock. The museum should not be missed out because it is an amazing place to learn about Sri Lankan history and culture.

Sigiriya Museum, Sri Lanka has a reception that you will see just as you enter it. This is not a typical museum reception. It is designed in the form of a gallery which displays photos and videos of Sigiriya and Sri Lanka. The photos and videos change with the changing seasons.

Attractions of Sigiriya Museum

There are 6 galleries in total, each of which displays artifacts and information of different eras. The first gallery details prehistory and prehistoric transformation relating to Sri Lanka. It displays human bones and stone weapons that were discovered in Sri Lanka in the prehistoric era. It also details how metals and iron were used in the civilization and how the civilization turned into an agricultural society over time. The second gallery of the archaeological museum is all about early and late Buddhist monasteries. The third gallery displays artefacts that were found during The Golden Age of Sigiriya.

The fourth gallery details what Sigiriya is most famous for: poetry, paintings and sculptures. Sigiriya is known for having a rich literary history. The fifth gallery depicts foreign trade and the courtly and monastic life. The main display in this gallery is a replica of a profoundly large earring made of gold and other precious stones. The sixth gallery is a very special one; it depicts the history of archaeology in Sri Lanka and is named The Hidden Centuries. The seventh gallery is on the top which you have to access by climbing up a staircase. This gallery is called the Frescoes Gallery and displays a life-sized model of the Sigiriya rock. Here, you will witness the world famous frescoes of Sigiriya apsaras.
