Soi 11, off the Nana BTS station, is where most visitors ease in. In a single 400-metre lane you get a rooftop (Above Eleven, Peruvian-Japanese food with a garden view), a big club (Levels, house and hip-hop, usually free before about 11 pm then THB 300–500 with a drink), and a hip-hop room (Sugar). Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza (the red-light strips)

Two short walks from Soi 11 sit Bangkok's famous go-go strips. Soi Cowboy (by Asok BTS) is a single neon lane of bars, and Nana Plaza is a three-floor complex off Soi 4. Both are adult, upfront and more of a spectacle than a night out. Walking through and taking in the neon is free and safe. Silom and Patpong

Silom is two scenes in one. Silom Soi 2 and Soi 4 hold Bangkok's best-known LGBTQ+ clubs (DJ Station is the anchor), buzzing and welcoming to everyone. Next door, Patpong runs a night market straight down the middle of its old red-light lanes, so you can browse fake watches and t-shirts with the neon as backdrop. RCA (Royal City Avenue): the megaclubs

RCA is a single strip built for clubbing, and it is where young Bangkok actually dances. Route 66 has run since the 1990s and spreads hip-hop, EDM and live Thai bands across three rooms. Beside it stand Onyx and Spaceplus, the big-room EDM clubs that pull international DJs, plus VOID for a harder underground sound. Drinks run cheaper than Sukhumvit and the energy peaks well after midnight. There is no BTS nearby, so Grab in and Grab out.

Khao San Road

Khao San is the loud, cheap, anything-goes backpacker street: buckets of Sang Som and soda for a few hundred baht, live bands, street pad thai and scorpion skewers, all in one kilometre. It is the best-value night in the city and the most democratic; everyone from gap-year students to off-duty locals ends up here. Thonglor and Ekkamai

Thonglor (Sukhumvit Soi 55) and neighbouring Ekkamai are where Bangkok goes to drink well. This is speakeasy country: Rabbit Hole (a moody multi-level cocktail bar), Iron Fairies (live jazz in a fairy-tale ironworks), and Japanese izakayas tucked behind unmarked doors. The BTS Skytrain and MRT run until roughly 23:30 to midnight, which is exactly when the clubs are warming up.
